1 > 2 > 3
Is there any series other than Crackdown that satisfies these conditions? A series where every iteration strays further and further from what made the original vision good?

Metroid Prime
To reiterate Prime 2 is by no means bad, it tried to experiment with things. Some things worked, others didn't. It didn't really try to build upon what made the original good, however. And then there's Prime 3 which basically just tried way too hard to be Halo.
Fear?
F.E.A.R. without a doubt. It's an impressive march of a developer having no earthly idea what made the first game good which leads me to believe that the first game was a mistake.
extraction point wasn't developed by monolith
no it was not but it's still a neat screenshot
yeah for sure man
What went wrong with the later games? I know FEAR is lauded for being perhaps the best use of bullet time in an FPS, having excellent AI and managing to convey a spooky atmosphere even if it relied on jumpscares. Surely just more of the same with better tech couldn't be worse. Also I just remembered:
>Crysis
I know the first game was essentially a Crytek tech demo, but that's what made it so impressive. Making 2 and 3 for consoles first was moronic, but I guess Far Cry had taken over as the engine showcase.
A lot of things in slow and sad decline, where to begin? The original FEAR was a pretty big tech game with really impressive approaches to lighting, effects, AI, and physics. The sequels fell out of this quality approach to kind of just quickly release the games. FEAR 2 replaced the combat model with cover mechanics, focused the plot more on Alma (and it gets pretty fricking ludicrous), added mech sections, the horror elements were more forced and actiony rather than having any buildup, and generally felt like a generic late 2000's shooter. F3AR was a complete disaster that was thankfully only 3 hours long, having abandoned all the mechanics that made the first game successful and replacing it with a co-op mode.
As for horror elements, it has the same issue the later Silent Hill games have in that it buys into its own bullshit too much and loses any sense of mystique or nuance. FEAR 2 did have the school that everyone loves but that was a 15 minute segment in a 7 hour game. F3AR has very few redeeming qualities.
if they had released fear 2 as its own game, it wouldve been alright. the problem is that it was a sequel to fear, one of the best shooters ever. you cant ride on those coattails and release something so painfully average
this scene gave me fricking nightmares as a kid. i did not expect them to kill holiday, especially not like that. last of us 2 has nothing on brutalizing a main character from the first game
Mass Effect
Fable.

Dark Souls
This. 2 and 3 were progressively more linear and action focused when what was good about 1 was the exploration and sense of discovery.
Sorry DSIIshitter, 3's still better.
Quake
>Quake better than Quake 2
I will slap your fricking mouth
F.E.A.R? 2 is shit and 3 is dogshit
Diablo, the sequels lost the methodical gameplay and atmosphere.
Arguably Spyro, but I'd say it's really more 1=2>3. Spyro 3 still rocks, although it absolutely strays from the tight, focused gameplay of the first title and is a bit worse off for it, in my opinion.
