Interplay was and is a zombie studio, none of the original Fallout devs were involved with that except I think Chris Taylor. Microsoft says they're still giving their acquired studios full autonomy. What I don't understand is how the folks at bgs haven't realized their strengths yet.
The reason their games are so successful is because of their modular nature. It's the reason skyrim and fallout are consistently in the most played and why 76 was an unmitigated disaster. Eso is irrelevant as it only attracted mmobabies and not actual tes fans to begin with.
Bgs does not tell good stories. Their writing is mid to bad and they do not understand what their fanbase wants. What they do understand is how to make complex interconnected modular systems. They are a maker of sandboxes. Say what you want about gamebreo but no other engine comes close to its capabilities in this respect.
The moment they utilize this understanding, and allow more competent storytellers (and I'm not necessarily implying Obsidian are competent writers in their current iteration) to make games within the systems they've created; the better.
Another fine example of this is the nukafaire Patch on fo76 test server. Being hailed as one of the best content updates since they added npcs, and not developed by any bgs in house studio.
Either let other companies under the Microsoft banner develop your ips, or start working on multiple titles simultaneously, and get better writers, because releasing the same game 8 times in 11 years ain't it chief.

John Gonzalez and Josh Sawyer are definitely two of the biggest puzzle pieces behind what made New Vegas so good, Chris Avellone was definitely as well in terms of the good Obsidian games. Pillars of Eternity and its sequel could've been so amazing and you can tell when you play them but they're super held back by not having enough people who know what they're doing.

I tried Halo CE back in the day since Ganker couldn't stop talking about how bad it was. Started it on Legendary and got fricking dumpstered on. I had to learn and adapt, and it ended up being one of my favorite FPS experiences. Still haven't played 2 or 3, though.

I bought the collector's edition on release. Fallout 1+2 fans were glad to finally get a real Fallout game, Fallout 3 babies hated it because of "muh exploration" everyone hated the bugs. A few months of patching later, things were fine and most people liked the writing in Dead Money and Old World Blues even if the response to the gameplay was mixed. When Fallout 4 came out a lot of people were disappointed that it wasn't more like New Vegas.

Notice how it's the same with Lanius too. They just complain because you can avoid fighting if you have 100 speech and pick the correct dialogue options. They ignore the context about what Lanius and the player are saying and just cry about dialogue options like Fallout 3 didn't allow you to literally talk the main antagonist to death, and allowed you to avoid fighting Autumn with a dialogue check.

And there's a good ass reason, because there's too fricking much of it. There's over 160 lines of dialogue FROM LANIUS ALONE in that discussion, which while you won't see every single one in a single encounter and playthrough, it's a genuinely long and complex dialogue, and the route to actually convincing him isn't just "pick the check when it shows up" and if you don't know the specific dialogue options to take, or actually try and consider whats being said in the conversation you can easily brick the conversation and trap yourself out of a peaceful resolution.
There is genuine problems with it, for sure, but its definitely intended that you're supposed to actually consider the implications of each option you pick, and while yes it does require you to do a 100 check to get to that point you aren't just picking biggest number check every time either. Is it perfect, no not really, but NV isn't really about that, and i think that it at the very least accomplishes the most important goal of what complex RPG interactions should be, making it feel like you're actually intereacting with a character and making choices in a conversation, not trying to pick the option that net benefits you in a game sense the most. I think the more you understand New Vegas that magic kinda leaves a little but I still think it manages to capture that sense of "this is a conversation not game dialogue" in a way 3 doesn't
Eden's interaction just feels like a gameplay setpiece where one of the options is explicitly the better one.

The fun part about Lanius dialogue is that there's a bunch of unmarked options AFTER you've convinced him, and one of those is something like "well good thing you surrendered". He gets offended and fights you anyway.

Yeah, and there are point where depending on the options you pick, you have to chose lower requirement skill checks or certain unmarked options to get the pacifist solution, its literally not just "pick the check to win" like it is with Eden, and honestly thats really pretty much all dialogue checks in Fallout 3 and 4. It's just a button you press to get a better reward or skip quest steps. In New Vegas you'll get additional dialogue, different paths and branches in conversations and quests, it'll sometimes give you more rewards or skip steps sure but they're also consequences to how you build your character. If I don't build a certain way i'm locked out of progressing a certain way, i can't just brute force it by reloading over and over like with Fallout 3 or 4, which like why the frick wouldn't I, there's no reason not to brute force the check unless you dont want to be reloading for a few minutes. A lot of dialogue options are literally just pure character development choices which is also great.

But the mod itself is more than enough proof. From the NCR being turned into Operation Anchorage, to the Brotherhood and Enclave returning as major factions in line with their Fallout 3 appearances, with the slave child dialogue option happening with a BoS related character. The first planet is good. Everything after the first planet is trash. The companion quests ruin the companions you recruited on that first planet, tainting even the good parts of the game as you play it.
If you very much like the 3d Fallout format, you'll enjoy that first planet thoroughly, so that alone is worth a bit of playtime. The writing and story structure drops off a cliff after that, so if recommend only engaging with quests you actually want to bother with, there are no hidden gems or interesting side quests that develop at that point. The main quest just randomly disks fizzles out, having little to no actual content or context.

Witcher has you playing a pre-established character. You can't really compare it to writing for a main character that is fully imagined by player that must have options to fulfil many different character traits the player may have about the person they are roleplaying as.

3 was my first fallout and when New Vegas first came out I hated it. I didn't understand it was an entirely new fallout and thought it was a glorified fallout 3 dlc. Then when I got it I hated how much more complicated and difficult they had made it compared to 3. What I don't understand is how the folks at bgs haven't realized their strengths yet.
The reason their games are so successful is because of their modular nature. It's the reason skyrim and fallout are consistently in the most played and why 76 was an unmitigated disaster. Eso is irrelevant as it only attracted mmobabies and not actual tes fans to begin with.
Bgs does not tell good stories. Their writing is mid to bad and they do not understand what their fanbase wants. What they do understand is how to make complex interconnected modular systems. They are a maker of sandboxes. Say what you want about gamebreo but no other engine comes close to its capabilities in this respect.
The moment they utilize this understanding, and allow more competent storytellers (and I'm not necessarily implying Obsidian are competent writers in their current iteration) to make games within the systems they've created; the better.
Another fine example of this is the nukafaire Patch on fo76 test server. Being hailed as one of the best content updates since they added npcs, and not developed by any bgs in house studio.

John Gonzalez and Josh Sawyer are definitely two of the biggest puzzle pieces behind what made New Vegas so good, Chris Avellone was definitely as well in terms of the good Obsidian games. Pillars of Eternity and its sequel could've been so amazing and you can tell when you play them but they're super held back by not having enough people who know what they're doing.

I bought the collector's edition on release. Fallout 1+2 fans were glad to finally get a real Fallout game, Fallout 3 babies hated it because of "muh exploration" everyone hated the bugs. A few months of patching later, things were fine and most people liked the writing in Dead Money and Old World Blues even if the response to the gameplay was mixed. When Fallout 4 came out a lot of people were disappointed that it wasn't more like New Vegas.

And there's a good ass reason, because there's too fricking much of it. There's over 160 lines of dialogue FROM LANIUS ALONE in that discussion, which while you won't see every single one in a single encounter and playthrough, it's a genuinely long and complex dialogue, and the route to actually convincing him isn't just "pick the check when it shows up" and if you don't know the specific dialogue options to take, or actually try and consider whats being said in the conversation you can easily brick the conversation and trap yourself out of a peaceful resolution.
There is genuine problems with it, for sure, but its definitely intended that you're supposed to actually consider the implications of each option you pick, and while yes it does require you to do a 100 check to get to that point you aren't just picking biggest number check every time either. Is it perfect, no not really, but NV isn't really about that, and i think that it at the very least accomplishes the most important goal of what complex RPG interactions should be, making it feel like you're actually intereacting with a character and making choices in a conversation, not trying to pick the option that net benefits you in a game sense the most. I think the more you understand New Vegas that magic kinda leaves a little but I still think it manages to capture that sense of "this is a conversation not game dialogue" in a way 3 doesn't
Eden's interaction just feels like a gameplay setpiece where one of the options is explicitly the better one.
The fun part about Lanius dialogue is that there's a bunch of unmarked options AFTER you've convinced him, and one of those is something like "well good thing you surrendered". He gets offended and fights you anyway.
Yeah, and there are point where depending on the options you pick, you have to chose lower requirement skill checks or certain unmarked options to get the pacifist solution, its literally not just "pick the check to win" like it is with Eden, and honestly thats really pretty much all dialogue checks in Fallout 3 and 4. It's just a button you press to get a better reward or skip quest steps. In New Vegas you'll get additional dialogue, different paths and branches in conversations and quests, it'll sometimes give you more rewards or skip steps sure but they're also consequences to how you build your character. If I don't build a certain way i'm locked out of progressing a certain way, i can't just brute force it by reloading over and over like with Fallout 3 or 4, which like why the frick wouldn't I, there's no reason not to brute force the check unless you dont want to be reloading for a few minutes. A lot of dialogue options are literally just pure character development choices which is also great.
The only branching quest is in the first town of Goodsprings with Ringo. Nothing else happens until you join one of the half assed factions to decide which powerpoint you want to have played at the end of the game.

This is pretty much how I felt playing New Vegas, it felt more like a sizable expansion to Fallout 3 instead of its own game.

The first planet is good. Everything after the first planet is trash. The companion quests ruin the companions you recruited on that first planet, tainting even the good parts of the game as you play it.
Would you say it's still worth a play-through, is it a hard pass?
If you very much like the 3d Fallout format, you'll enjoy that first planet thoroughly, so that alone is worth a bit of playtime. The writing and story structure drops off a cliff after that, so if recommend only engaging with quests you actually want to bother with, there are no hidden gems or interesting side quests that develop at that point. The main quest just randomly disks fizzles out, having little to no actual content or context.

I like daggerfall but it was literally unbeatable without the patch. Even after the patch there are numerous dungeons which cannot be completed without cheats enabled. Bethesda has always produced really buggy games

Witcher has you playing a pre-established character. You can't really compare it to writing for a main character that is fully imagined by player that must have options to fulfil many different character traits the player may have about the person they are roleplaying as.

3 was my first fallout and when New Vegas first came out I hated it. I didn't understand it was an entirely new fallout and thought it was a glorified fallout 3 dlc. Then when I got it I hated how much more complicated and difficult they had made it compared to 3. I replayed it a few years back and found just how shit my tastes were, I now look back sadly on not appreciating what a masterpiece it was despite its flaws.

If you pick anything other than small guns as your weapon skill, you're pretty much expected to already know where the frick to find the earliest big/energy guns, or better know how shitty late game melee/unarmed is, while throwing expects you to unironically farm grenades off random encounters.
These old crpgs are never balanced. Take Arcanum as an example, you can spend hours grinding for components as a tech specialist or just harm spam your way to immortality by being a mage

Why would they be jealous of it considering that not only was it initially less financially successful than their own games, but they make profit off of every copy of NV sold anyway due to them being the publisher?
If they are jealous I'd imagine it would be over NV's cultural relevance and saying power in relation to their own Fallout projects. Which might be an extra sore spot because Bethesda is capable of reaching similar levels of relevance and staying power when it comes to the three 3D TES games.

FO3 almost single-handedly popularised the post-apocalyptic aesthetic amongst older zoomers (keep in mind FO3 was the first Fallout many older zoomers played and in some cases, even one of their earliest exposures to post-apocalyptic fiction). FO3’s influence is comparable to The Walking Dead in that sense. The truth is that 3 and NV are the two pinnacles of the franchise in terms of revelance. No other game reached the peak of those two.
