Skill issue. (Almost) any species/background/god combo can ascend with 15 these days.
Another one of my 15-runers, as a NaTm of Chei. Probably the most fun I've ever had in this game:
Slouch BTFOs almost everything. Everything it doesn't kill you can one-shot with 27 in unarmed combat and 30+ strength and dex. I only used defensive spells, no offensive. 64 AC, 40 EV, Lichform, Deflect Missiles, Regenerate, Cblink. Couldn't use Haste due to Chei.
So much fun. I did the whole run on my phone as well!

I've done a 5 rune as Minotaur Breserker of Trog and a 3 rune run as a Gargoyle Earth Elementalist. I grabbed 15 runes but died on my way out of hell as a Deep Dwarf Warrior of Makhleb. Freaking Tormenters.
It's just trial and error.
All right, all right one more. This one more recent. DjWiz of Makhleb. This one was pretty fun, but almost too easy.
Djinn means you have no control over what spells you get. You have to play with the cards you get dealt. Oh, and no mana so you have to cast from HP. Makhleb synergizes nicely with Djinns because he gives you HP back each kill.
The Wiz starting spells are great. Magic dart takes out critters at range, and you can kite with Blink and Call Imp. Once Mephitic Cloud becomes castable you're laughing at everything that isn't poison resistant.
In the Lair I got Stone Arrow + Fireball to take out chunkier targets and groups of yaks. Then I got Death Channel so all the dudes who just got fireballed come back to life to serve me. Awesome.
Iron Shot came next and that became one of my staples. Big damage helped take out big dudes while they're confused by mephitic cloud.
Then came CBL, Malign Gateway, and Summon Hydra. These saw limited use. The Mephitic Cloud+Fireball/Iron Shot/Death Channel combo was doing work.
Then my last two spells were Chain Lightning and FIRE STORM. Fire Storm is the absolute nuts. XBOX HUEG damage, AoE, Fire Vortices, and it even damages fire-immune baddies like Orbs of Fire. I basically steamrolled the rest of the game, including the revamped Hell branches because I could basically spam Fire Storm forever. Fire immunity meant I took middling damage if I cast it on myself, and each kill would restore me HP thanks to Makhleb. And everything that died came back to me as spectres thanks to Death Channel. I was basically unstoppable.
Super fun build to play because you never know what spells you're gonna get!

Can play any version you want. Can run even on the most toastery of PCs. Game is still fun and probably the most accessible classic roguelike.

Everquest had the best ogres and trolls. I don't know why people aren't ripping those off more often.
Best part of them was that they weren't afraid to make them HUEG. The game even has spells for them to slightly shrink so they can navigate dungeons.
Definitely lmao. Luv me dwarves. I feel like the latest is good enough to coexist with older versions, though, rather than get superceded by them. Lots of neat quirks like the cinder acolyte. I guess the one thing in latest I can safely I'm not into is the timer replacement, food was fine, and if they wanted to buff casters, just reduce the hunger casting penalty.
Haven't tried any of the forks myself, but heard good things about them! Definitely worth trying if you're tired of the base game. I know many people never forgave the devs for removing mountain dwarfs.
I haven't play DCSS in a while but i'm happy to see them finally stopping all those removals and adding some stuff back in, some stuff surely needed to go but some of the classes could have just been reworked.

nu-crawl has a thing where only one item in a set will generate for a run. example, your run only has one of acid, quicksilver or light wands. this makes each run feel different and lets them add more shit without buffing your char too much or flooding your inventory.
they should do this for gods and spells too

Your argument could've worked if all I cared for was winning or if crawl didn't have hight diverse playstyles (unlike most other roguelikes) but that's not the case. It is not even remotely comparable to things like ADOM or IVAN or CoQ. Only ToME remotely reaches the amount of diversity in gimmicks from the player agency angle. Maybe demon too. You gotta recognise fundamental differences between the games where it's due IMO
Your proposed solution of "just use seed/wizmode" is also kind of a shittt one because things like Jiyva or NuLugonu are sidegrades and aren't fucking game winners considering how fucking rare they can be.
gods aren't a fundamental part of your character build in this game, just as picking heavy or light armor, what type of weapon you use, what spell schools you learn, etc, are products of a lot of things. it's just like artefacts, each game spawns different ones, it would be worse if all the good ones were guaranteed to spawn every run because that would reduce variety.

Yes, they are. I often play the game and think "I want to try this race with this god". The god choice is the whole reason I make the character. Exclusive gods would be an incredibly annoying change. Now, if I'm on a streak and I find an early altar of a nice god I might take it. But I only play like that some of the time. Often I just want to try a god/race combo.
they're equally important, many people consider gods to be essentially difficulty levels, like if you pick Elyvilon or Xom you clearly just want to lose

I absolutely disagree, they affect, warp and change the very foundations of gameplay, which is what makes them great. No randart or skill will shake up the gameplay like Gozag, Yred, QazLel, Ru and so on will. Picking between axes or swords is fucking trivial compared to how much of a loud gay Qaz will make you, how many core functions Ru will turn off or how God changes the Gold resource economy

Earliest version without any game-breaking bugs, item identification was bigger deal, stinger enemies/stat death being a major threat and strategizing around it, more like a "dungeon crawl" as the name suggests. The big problem with the version though is no chei or jivya or new tools like sack of spiders :(, I haven't tried any of the variants though and am anxious to do so

how do I even get started with extended? my best run so far was a 5 rune DrEE of Veh who spammed shatter left and right. Most of my runs end in lair or the first s branch though.
My best runs have been 4-5 runes and I am pretty happy with myself since I did it multiple ways. I kinda dont even wanna bother with extended because certain gods favour it much more than the others which doesn't sound very fun.

I only managed to escape with the orb once on my playthroughs of Minotaur Warrior. Is the game a lot harder when you press auto-explore and only use one weapon?
auto explore is a noob trap, you don't want to be doing it beyond floor 5.

Basically all i did was auto explore and try to kill everything in my line of sight. The mutations from those weird ball things in the orb room were really nasty so i always figured i wasn't playing as it was intended
autoexplore is fine for most of the game, you just play it safe on floors with runes, hell branches, or zot

You can only play Human Fighter and all branches but Dungeon have been removed. Scrolls have been replaced with "fun buttons" because reading is problematic.

The Golden Path is Dungeon > Lair > Orc > Depths > Vault > Zot in different order depending on your build. These are the fun, well-designed parts of the game. Vault 6 is the most fun floor cause it dares you to teleport and fight your way from the corners since the doors get locked. The rest of the game is just homosexual game of "do you have proper set of resists for this??" Or jerking off for eternity in randomly generated pans and ziggurats
the new hells are pretty fun. pan is still stupid bullshit.

I've gotten 15 runes multiple times with a spriggan wizard but they kept nerfing magic over and over again for years. Now there is just one good build and everything else is trash. It is really unfortunate because there used to be a lot more depth
They literally removed all the difficulty, 15 rune games are possible with all class/race combos while joining and abandoning all religions in a single run.
The last decade of "Eliminating White-centric races" to promote diversity and removing in-jokes to "not confuse new players" hasn't helped either.

Sludge Elf Transmuter was my favorite combo. I quit playing ages ago and it looks like the game is somehow even worse now.
Furries in the Discord push their OC's as substitutes for "pure human" or "half human" races, they really, really want to replace Deep Elf with some WoW Draenei rip-off because Elf is too human.
