15 years into development, Beyond Good and Evil 2 gets a new lead writer

>Prior to the move to Ubisoft, Arellano was the narrative designer on Super Evil Megacorp's 2015 MOBA Vainglory (opens in new tab). Her LinkedIn (opens in new tab) account indicates that she also served as a writer at Deep Silver Volition (her Twitter account says she worked on the Saints Row reboot), and as a narrative designer on World of Warcraft at Blizzard.
>"We are very happy to welcome Sarah who is one of the latest recruits on Beyond Good and Evil 2," a Ubisoft spokesperson said in an email sent to PC Gamer.
>"The development team is hard at work to deliver on the promise made to its community."
>As for what it means for Beyond Good and Evil 2, that's anyone's guess at this point.
>The hiring of a new lead writer is the closest thing to a real sign of life we've seen in years (and the Ubisoft rep noted that the company is hiring for other positions at its Montpellier studio (opens in new tab), which is working on the game), but it's also easy to view it as a sign that the whole thing is mired and may well be starting over.
>That's obviously not a great place to be after 15 years of supposed work.

    >15 years into development

    >2008 teaser
    >radio silence for an honest to god decade
    >game gets reannounced at E3 2017, now a prequel instead of a sequel
    >?
    >2020: Michael Ancel leaves Ubisoft during the flurry of misconduct allegations against the higher-ups, though mostly alleging he was unorganized and bullying, rather than something on the level of sexual harassment like oher Ubi execs
    >Ubisoft puts out statement that Ancel had not been involved with BGE2 for some time
    >2022: Beyond Good & Evil 2 gets a writer

It's going to enter the development hell pantheon alongside DNF, FFXV, Cyberpunk and Bioshock Infinite.
If and when it ever comes out, it will be due to an Ubisoft producer saying enough is fricking enough, put together whatever you have into a functional game and launch it, just like those four did; games formed by idea guys who couldn't figure out when to stop playing ideagay and actually develop the game they were supposed to, and then the guys signing the check send in a real project manager to ship it.

      Anonymous

Unike DNF this hasn't been in development since the previous game. There was a video that leaked that was a teaser, but Ubi Montpellier was not working on this at all. They were working on UbiArt and then used the engine for the Rayman Origins/Legends then the mobile runner games, before that they worked on the King Kong movie game. Ancel was also working on a separate game called WiLD outside of Ubisoft and that got cancelled, so BG&E2 is not in a Duke Nuke Forever situation at all

They never claimed it was under development, it was all rumors and the devs of it, Ubi montpellier were doing other projects all the time, and being evasive with the topic of BGE2, because guess what, it just wasn't in development at all. All you had was a teaser videos with was clearly was not gameplay. DNF had people in 3D Realms actively saying this is under development. This is a dishonest clickbait article, I mean the game so far looks like shit but it's more like 4 years of development, and the gameplay footage of it looks raw as frick, they're like in pre alpha years ago

Clickbait article, BGE2 looks terrible from what they have shown but this game was in a low key cancelled state because Ubisoft didn't like a sequel to a game that was kinda bad in terms of sales. It had a cult following, I think Ubisoft wasn't in the mood of delivering the bad news, and later they ended up approving it. The devs of the game and Michel Ancel were doing other things all the time, Ancel even founded a studio outside of Ubisoft called Wild Sheep Studio. Ancel always wanted to make a sequel but the underperforming sales were always a roadblock to the higher ups and BGE isn't exactly a cheap game to make since you have lots of voice acting and you'd have to make a full 3D world with lots of open environments

BGE1 is really good however it did not sell a lot. I think this is a clickbait article title because it was not under development at all and the original devs, Michel Ancel & co at Ubi Montpellier were working on many things in the meantime. They were obviously not working on it and nobody else was working on it. Ancel declared many times he would like to make BGE2, which implies it was not under development. It's easy to understand why Ubisoft would not greenlight the project, the original was a cult classic with poor financial performance.

            >It's been ages since I played the game, but wasn't Jade like a super caring, motherly girl taking care of a literal orphanage?
Pretty much. The very first objective of the game is to just get enough money so you can pay for the electricity bill and turn the shields back on to protect the kids, presumably orphaned from the ongoing invasion. She also alternates between bantering and being genuinely playful with Pey'j, rather than giving him an attitude.
Hell, there's a pretty great scene as you're gearing up for the finale where she returns to find the lighthouse busted and the kids having been abducted. It's a pretty good character moment of breaking down and showing weakness.

    This (nonexistent) game fascinates me.
First of all, Beyond Good and Evil wasn't that great in the first place? It wasn't bad, but my god why are they so desperate to keep this corpse afloat?
And secondly, if people REALLY think Beyond Good and Evil was some kind of a masterpiece, then why the frick are they trying to make the sequel as fricking ABSURDLY different, to a point of being a fricking opposite of the original?

The gameplay of the original was console trash, but I can see some appeal in the tone and charm of the story. The game had a fairly cute tone, and at it best, it actually almost reminded me of Hiyao Miyazaki's stories.

So why the everloving frick would start making a sequel as a gritty war game, and then switch the direction into a hideous, aggressive vulgar shitshow featuring hideous obnoxious Black folk everywhere?

If you are this confident that the original has more appeal, why go for a tone as diametrally opposed to the first one?

Can someone explain this to me? What the frick is going on with this franchise?

      Anonymous

      >why are they so desperate to keep this corpse afloat?
Because Ubisoft needs more than just Tom Calancy, AssCreed and Just Dance in active their library.

Why they didn't do more with their UbiArt engine is beyond me, and BG&E2 I'd expect would just be pozzed as frick going by the last time they wasted time on a cgi trailer for it.

it's very simple, the first game did not sell well, and people want a sequel because of the cliffhanger, Ubisoft wants to change it because it did not sell as much as they liked. Ubisoft also changed Prince of Persia to become more edgy after Sands of Time did not perform well in sales.

Given how many great games had poor sales under Ubisoft, it's clear they had some issues getting the message across because those games weren't bad at all to deserve financial flopping or underwhelming sales

        >the first game did not sell well
I blame the marketing focusing more on the story than the gameplay. "There's a conspiracy and only Jade can get to the bottom of it!".

Thank you for that genuinely insightful post, that does actually make a lot of sense.
Though I am a bit confused about why would they care people want a conclusion to the cliff-hanger, if those people are such a tiny market (given the game did not sell very well?)
Not to mention... isn't every single itteration of the new game a very, very obvious reboot, rather than a straight up sequel? In which case, making it as response to the demand for a conclusion rather... pointless.

The people who want a conclusion are the fans of the game. Ubisoft clearly doesn't give two fricks about giving a conclusion since they made BGE2 a prequel and I remember people saying "buy 2 if you want a third game", basically holding what happens to poor Pey'j hostage to that trainwreck. Frick Ubisoft, this project looks more and more like a total disaster.

            >this project looks more and more like a total disaster.
I mean... was there any point where it didn't look like a COMPLETE dissaster already?
I remember the first teaser for the sequel already being laughably off key, and then they came up with monkeys and the promises of a procedurally generated space gameplay, which even back then, was basically saying "yeah, we are just fricking with you, this shit will never work".

I can't see things looking worse than those absolutely amazingly hideous trailers accompanies with promises effectively spelling complete design suicide, and tech demonstration that made SC look reserved and realistic.

When there was the "leak" of the teaser of what looked like Jade running around and escaping like she does in some parts of the firstgame, there was hope it wouldn't be what it currently is about. Then you hear the moronic dyke faced writer talking about how this is about representation and well nothing of this new space monkey shit sounds good, tone is completely off, ambition is in the stratosphere with their multiple planets to explore approach, then Michel Ancel quits. I would be very surprised if this isn't straight awful

I was under the impression the tech for that Jade run-around bit got repurposed into a Prince of Persia that also didn't happen.

If that wasn't enough, I recall that Jade never seems to have any memory of living anywhere besides Hyllis, which means whatever happens in this game will get wiped from her memory by the end anyway.

Is Beyond Good and Evil 2 another Duke Nukem situation where the creator had too much ambition?

Once President Xi buys Ubisoft this whole project will turn around and BG&E2 will become the best selling game of all time, just you wait.

I kinda feel like they've gone too far with this thing. They should just have created the best game they could with the tech they had at the time and be done with it. It seems pretty obvious to me that they are trying to create the "bestest game there ever wuz" and that shit is just frigging impossible to create, it doesn't exist and never will, so just fricking get it done and release the fricking thing, eh? It'll get the 7 or 8 that it deserves and we can all move on with our lives, yeah?

Just contract CC2 to make the game for you. At least you'd get kemono characters instead of western cgi'd animal humans.

        Assassins creed sequel sales.

Same thing that killed EA: Chasing Call of Duty revenue numbers w/ oversized AAA projects vs. focusing on a bunch of small/medium-sized projects that all do respectably well in their own rights.

Ubisoft had a lot of great little project released during sixth gen (Rocksmith, Child of Light, Grow Home, From Dust, Scott Pilgrim, etc) and we haven't had shit like that again in the last 8 years. It's just been AssCreed, Far Cry, and Ghost Recon.
Well ok, and Fenyx Rising which was alright.

    Mirrors Edge?

Honestly there's nothing like BGE, people compare it to Zelda, it is an action adventure game like that but it did enough things to be quite different, the hovercraft racing, the focus on the light stealth and the investigation/taking pictures gameplay. Mirror's Edge is a parkour platformer and BGE didn't even have platforming at all.

Outside of having a female lead (which usually meant shit sales unless it's Tomb Raider), nothing is woke about the game.

It's been ages since I played the game, but wasn't Jade like a super caring, motherly girl taking care of a literal orphanage?
Because that is about as far opposite to being "woke" as it gets.
Generally speaking, feminine traits, especially motherly inclinations, are seen as far graver offense to the woke culture, than straight up male characters.

I think "woke" just means whatever's annoying you this week. Or at least that's how the /misc/troons use it.

Michel Ancel and his team are a talented bunch who did certain things some people aren't even aware. Besides creating Rayman/Beyond Good & Evil/UbiArt, Ancel's team created the Jade engine, used not only for BG&E but for Prince of Persia. This engine would be updated to be used on AssCreed. Part of me feels glad he's gone because he deserves better than working for Ubishit

It's okay, the gameplay is neutered compared to the previous game, it's a borderline walking sim with occasional "hide from the monster segments" but outside of that it's good.

    >Beyond Good and Evil was a cool niche game with a dedicated cult following
    >People wait years for a sequel but it looks like its never gonna happen, they accept and move on
    >10 years pass and Ubi suddenly announces a new game out of no where despite the long gap
    >Its a prequel instead of a sequel despite the cliffhanger ending
    >Despite being a prequel they call it Beyond Good and Evil 2???
    >Instead of a action stealth game with a camera mechanic like the original its some massive space RPG / Third person shooter instead like Star Citizen
    >Shilled hard during E3 2017 as the next big upcoming game
    >Radio silence for the next 5 years and subsequent development hell ensue
Unironically if this game ever comes out, will fans of the original games still even care, or even be alive?
