Half - Life was released 1998, the CS mod was released '99, with licensed release coming a year later in November of 2000s.
Half-Life was built using a modified id-tech Quake Engine (from 1996) named Gold-Source.

      Quarry fever is covid19

CS is mindless and impulsive. It is garbage. Doom 2 tournaments where better and had bigger maps with way more fun weaponry. Battlefield 2 was keno as frick, but the industry literally throttled its online game play because it stalled future sales of first person gaming. Still hasn't been anything as good since. 90s PC gaming was exceptional, and the OP can split hairs left and right. Would be hard to argue the 00s or teens could match it. It was a time when game developers where under the pozzed radar and could be genuinely creative. Heck, the first civilization game is better than "indy" games today. Command and Conquer was, and is still fun. Back when the industry wasn't handcuffing game development to avoid making a game that would keep interest for longer than a year. Some of the games where even free back then and you never had micro transactions. Madden 96 on fricking genesis is better than madden 23.

CS was a breath of fresh air when it came out - recoil patterns, 2-3 placed shots to kill, no re-spawns until end of the round, teamplay. it may seem like not much of a deal, but up until that points fps games were about strafing around in circles, soaking up damage. back then it was the boomer fpses that got stale and repetitive.

          Quarry fever is covid19

To even stay alive in CS you have to be on aderol or meth. It's fricking mindless. I never met someone who was any good at it that had a life or touched grass. It isn't a game you can casually play either. You have to dedicate yourself to hyper pattern recognition to even survive 60 seconds. And that's all it is, a series of mouse maze patterns. It's boring as frick. The maps are tiny. Girls can get good at it quickly so it's that bad. I have never seen a girl play C&C and be good at it. They hate it. Because it requires abstract thought. CS is a flow chart. It's easy.

Sit down and play civilization. It's stupid hard for a newbie. Requires an IQ North of 100 to play, unlike CS.

          >muh moronic take

That's just it. Anyone can get good at it. I was very good at it. Because I had a background in first person shooters already. I played it for about 15 minutes and said frick this and went back to battlefield 2. Which is 100× better that CS as a first person shooter. How many women did you speak with on CS compared to any other first person shooter? It was designed for people who sucked at big map fps. It attracted impulsive and inpatient people. CS was where morons went to boost their ego. If I wanted to torture an intelligent person I would make them play CS.

Impulsive and impatient people, yeah maybe. I never heard nerd rage like that in any other game. I'm an impatient fps player myself, i want to go at it and not sit around waiting for shit to happen, thats why prefered the bf series because there was always something to attack and you didnt have to wait for a minute or more when you died. Its strange those rage nerds stuck to CS, its like it was the one e-sport fps so thats where you could get epeen points. Or maybe its just the long respawn that makes it so much sweeter to pull a kills streak, becuase you know the other guys are smashing their keyboard when you pull it off.

well, most video games at a high level boil to a few select tactics and metas. civ is like mario party for morons and the single player is ass, since the AI either cheats or is completely moronic. while the multiplayer either drags on through TB play or everybody disconnects when they realize they are about to lose. there's no sense of a struggle or tension to 4x games, hence nobody plays on lower difficulties or highly select MP modes and settings since they flow like shit. hence why they suck compared to the 'simple' action games.

Civ what? The new civ games are garbage. Civ 1 you child. It is Supreme. 2 and maybe 3. All vidya AI cheats. At least with civ 1 and 2 you can adapt and overcome. Civ 1 will break you on its easiest setting. And once you apply yourself and get better you will experience endless amounts of gameplay. I still play it. Because ITS A REAL CHALLENGE. It was designed for adults by a high IQ indy game maker. Sid raised the bar, kids can't play it for a reason. You have to be smart. A 10 year old with a juice box can dominate CS. Not civ. The fact you bring up post 90s civs games makes OPs point. Heck, look at these moron arcades now where chuckie cheese arcade games are literally a timed play, not 3 lives. Tactical? Wtf is tactical about a tiny Map and running for your life from the word GO. Doom 2 with bigger maps, and the ability to make your own maps throws your theory right out the window. CS maps get old within 30 minutes. Bored with the doom 2 map? Make your own. Do you even know what tactical is? Or because the game is tacticool you gleam it that way? CS is pattern recognition. Yes, but I think since two years ago we are entering a renaissance thanks to how easy is becoming for small teams to develop increasingly complex games on a budget, the AAA kino era is dead and buried but the future is bright

      Anonymous

I think you're absolutely right, some of the biggest games of steam comes from small teams. Deep rock galactic or valheim for example, both from small teams.

Its hard to compete titles like battlefield because they have animators etc who makes it look great, but you really dont need all that to make a good game. If you compare triple AAA games from 20 years ago, they all look worse then current indie games when it came to animations, weapons etc and those games where still good. The unreal engine looks awesome, i think were not just going to get awesome looking games but also movies.

Yes, we are going to see the SOVL of early 2000´s niche rpgmaker games break the chains of technical limitations. I am looking in particular to see an encore of the ps1/ps2 aesthetics, last game I played on 22 was signalis and if Unity can look and handle like THAT the coming years surely are going to be good

The first multiplayer game I played was Hexen. I have a friend who had a LAN network at home, and we'd play deathmatch most days after school. So many great games made in that decade

    Hexen
    Heretic
    Doom 1+2
    Warcraft 1+2
Star Wars: Dark Forces (The sequel, Jedi Knight, you could use a light saber and force powers)
    Mechwarrior 2: Mercenaries
    Z
    Syndicate Wars
    Command & Conquer: Red Alert
    Theme Hospital
    Sim City 3000

Most games back then were apolitical to cater to their audience (young men) who were also apolitical, the game companies and developers weren't pushing agendas. Simpler times.

Hexen and heretic was kino, those early level graphics and restrictions on map never fit for a futuristic fps like doom imo but it was perfect with the gothic team of hexen. Way more immersive if you ask me

For me, the first Quake was the most immersive. And then Half-Life was great too.

Real 3D 6dof was the Descent series. Unfortunate that it gets overlooked. Game is very fun if it doesn't just make you motion sick!

        Anonymous

I get what you're saying and I kinda agree with it. They did more work on the ambient noises like thunder and lightning, creaking doors, etc. to add to the atmosphere. Heretic and Hexen also built further on the Doom type engine by allowing you to look up and down (with the keyboard), which was pretty novel at the time.

As an aside, I also liked Dungeon Keeper. Bullfrog made some great games back then

          Anonymous

I only really played doom 2 with mouse and freelook, so i never noted that difference between doom and hexen. Just the ways the maps where built, layout, collecting keys to progress etc made more sense for some fantasy castle then futuristic humans. But i was never that into those game, when i really got into it games like duke numem 3d was out so thats where my nostalgia is at.

Simcity 3000 is the first one I ever played and I still like it over 4. I also usually turned disasters off.

I had played the older ones with no understanding, but 3000 I had with the booklet that explained stuff.. Or maybe it was a pdf file on the cd-rom?
Regardless, it has great music and it's a joy to watch the city expand without having to manage 40 different parameters like in modern games
Played the shit out of Tropico 3 and the later editions just add more and more bloat that takes away from the core gameplay and mechanics, even just the farms becoming circular multicrop things that just PUMP OUT cash crops making it far too easy

Yeah, good times, everything was new - soundcards, 3D accelerators, cd drives, games magazines and books full of cheat codes. We had home consoles but arcades were still massive.

But it was also the time when the first big push for making games more "girl friendly" happened - just imagine all that untapped market potential, they kept saying. Most kids these days think feminism/wokery in gaming is a new thing, lol. Just like my generation thought global warming was our thing, unaware of how long it had been around just waiting for the right time.

All art forms have their peak, and the subsequent decline. Opera, paintings, Movies, the Novel, have all peaked and then either declined or died completely. Gaming's rise and decline was much more sudden than the aforementioned, and the '90s was certainly the best for it as an art.

I got the muzzle loader, waiting for my glass. Will be an additional hunting season next year. Gonna take a trip to wiscy. Won't disclose my state no offense bro. My kids and emmediate family eat natural red meat year round. I have a freezer dedicated just for the venison. Deer stroganoff is my favorite recipe.

I use a Swedish Mauser to rifle hunt with a scout scope. Rifle was made 10p years ago. The swedes had the best steel foundry in the world. They had a secret recipe for their steel. The 6.5x55 swede is to this day one of the finest hunting rounds. I am going to upgrade to a 6.5 prc next year, but will still hunt locally with my 100 year old rifle.

i didnt care about sw either but my friend was super hyped over it, even bought the game for me.
concept was awesome. sandbox mmo with almost completely player created economy, from large scale resource harvesting (with harvesters made by architects) all the way to creating vendors to sell ur stuff. dynamic world you could place houses and structures anywhere and design them however you wanted. 32 professions ranging from combat to merchant to musician to politician.

but sony fricked the playerbase over so badly i remember massive serverwide protests before a gamewrecking expansion was about to be implemented and people who grinded for many months to get jedi (alpha class) were screwed cause they were going to make it a starting class.

Consoles ruined PC gaming, particularly when their architectures began to essentially be PC hardware. Game design went to shit once PC games began to be console ports. The reliance on the DLC revenue was another milestone on the road to hell. Then women began to get into developer studios and brought their moronic politics with them. It has been argued that the price of a game needs to be adjusted for inflation. I would be willing to pay $100 for a game if the game was edgy, politically incorrect, extremely violent, trauma-inducing, and willing to say Black person a lot in the game's dialogue, as well as let me say Black person while playing online. We need based games more than ever.
