it's the future, but consoles couldn't swing it yet. if they cannot have a seamless world at 4k 60fps + then they should just make segmented levels.

Consoles can swing it and all we get is garbage ass games, just look at any ubisoft game in the past decade

I'll believe it when I see it. There's no coincidence that open world games are considered a genre, and follow a similar formula. Having piecemeal content scattered everywhere.

Like Bethesda and their new Starfield, their words on that was that space is mostly empty. Funnily enough, if other devs would employ some iota of empty space in their games, then the content you come across might be substantial. I digress, I don't think we're there yet. They need to be hung up for about ten years maybe.

I know consoles are the boogeyman that people blame for everything they don't like, but the genre is just shit. It's been proven beyond all doubt that the old-school developers knew what they were doing by relying on tight level design, hub worlds, world maps, etc. to create the illusion of a big world without the sacrifices required to actually make one. The hours of boring walking in empty grass fields that we were supposedly missing out on have added frick all to games except for bloat.

    Open world doesnt mean anything.
Open world has 0 effect on the quality of the game.

Open world games just don't translate past sixth generation I think. Hardware improvements meant developers were compelled to make maps bigger but that just makes them more of a chore to transverse and it feels like the quality of map design per square metre suffers as a result. GTA San Andreas struck the balance perfectly in this regard I think. Its map has plenty of variety and the different sections feel like they each fulfill a different purpose but you can still get around the map quickly while it maintains its illusion of vastness. Compare this to GTA V where the map is just endless desert and mountains. Modern open world games have fast travel options to address this but that almost feels soulless as it the developers are admitting a part of gameplay as fundamental as moving is such a chore that there is an option to automate it

The increase in realism also took some fun away. Again with GTA, we saw this from the jump to GTA IV where the new physics made walking and driving feel sluggish. I don't want my character to fall off a motorbike so easily and then roll for ages just because I'm driving too fast. I prefer the arcadey feel of the PS2 GTA games where you're glued to the bike and they encourage things like driving off of Mt.Chiliad or unique stump jumps

Then lastly, I think a factor is that we're older now and have more options for entertainment. It's easy to get lost in Liberty City or Los Santos as a kid blowing up cars for hours and running from the army when you only have a handful of games and no high-speed internet. The sandbox element to these games loses its appeal eventually
