2024 Japan National Championships aka VGC Japan Nationals 2024

Streams:
Day 1

Day 2

https://liberty-note.com/2024/04/22/pjcs2024-h-top64/
Here's the participants of the tourney. Perhaps there's a Japanese name you recognize? Not that anyone here knows Japanese anyway.

>Players will be seeded in a 64-player best-of-1 double-elimination bracket. All rounds will be played until only 8 players remain (this is after winners’ round 5 and losers’ round 8).
>The 8 remaining players will then face in a fresh new best-of-3 double-elimination bracket.
>Day 2 players must be in the venue by 2 June 2024 at 8:30 JST (10 June at 23:30 UTC) for Junior players, and at 9:00 JST (00:00 UTC) for Senior and Masters players.

Take this chance to take a gander at the unique Japanese metagame and their fricktarded tourney ruleset that is completely different from the rest of the entire world and even heavily online based despite the fact that physical events would be super duper the best and most fitting for Japan considering their unique event culture and how easy it is to travel places over there too since the country is so small and all.

Good to see that even Japanese tournaments take a million years to start.

    >their fricktarded tourney ruleset
There's almost nothing wrong with it.
Shitters get one match, and two chances.
The winners get two matches, along with the two chances.

Maybe this one is half-passable but there's no defending the moronic online only qualifier system.

That's the trend in Japan due to improving infrastructure to make it happen.

Not having venue fees reduces the costs to run these events.

So what you are saying it is a cheap israelite decision. How does that encourage a good competitive and truly skill based system?

            >So what you are saying it is a cheap israelite decision.
            no
if life could be lived online, most people would choose that option
            >How does that encourage a good competitive and truly skill based system?
This is Pokemon. It is not skill-based. It is luck and guessing.

Why the frick do the Japanese streams have an actual spectator mode but the western streams don't?

      Small indie company please understand.
It's certainly odd how little support the western side of things gets when the franchise becomes more and more western pandering with every passing generation.

        It's a tech move.
It's for when on this ridiculous sped crept tailwind based meta where even fricking nearly 150 base speed is not enough you need to finish off something with chip damage.

You'd see Quick Attack Zacian sometimes at the end of Gen 8. It's not unheard of.

Ah. The Calyrex guy decided to just spam offense against the Lunala guy. The red card killed his momentum by removing Chi-Yu from the opener, and forcing lots of damage on Rillaboom early.

Hard to give a play-by-play especially when I don't know Japanese.

Nah you're fine. I'm just always amused by high level meta, and have always been intensely curious about the Japanese meta cause I've heard it's insane, but I don't play competitive enough to suss it out just by watching. I'd say my actual skill is in that limbo between Casual-Pro player.

For this match, Calyrex guy screwed up by leading with Tornadus thinking his opponent would lead Groudon, which caused him to effectively lose a mon early. Then he got Trick Room'd on and had no counterplay.

I mean you don't need to be a pro to realize Red Card Shadow Rider is an absolutely insane pick.

                It's not insane, just uncommon.
The idea is to Terastalize and then force the probably fast Ghost resistant out.

Japan only has like 2 IRL events a year and they get to use the spectator mode, the frick? Does it need to be unlocked by a GF/TPC employee or something?
