There obviously is a big regression of programmers skill over the last three decades. Like if you go read more in depth stuff about how the original DOOM was made, it was a literal programming and techological marvel at the time. All the shit they came up with to make the game look like it did and run on that ancient limited-ass hardware is amazing. PS1 and PS2 era games are also worth reading about, those systems were super limited and devs had to come up with real weird shit to make the games run decently. PS3 games all ran like dogshit but I've heard that has to do with the system's retarded architecture.
My favorite story about the PS1 is how most of the Sony-supplied libraries were such hot garbage that everyone from Namco to Naughty Dog wound up writing everything basically from scratch anyway.
>What were they thinking?
"obviously every single snoy cultist is going to pony up $600+tip, we don't need to try harder, we got this gen in our pocket already"
>Originally, the Xbox 360 was equipped with only 256 MB of RAM, but Epic, the Gears of War developer, demonstrated to Microsoft that the console should have 512 MB of RAM to deliver much better performance. When asked about this, Epic Games Executive Vice President Mark Rein said in 2006: "So the day they made the decision, we were apparently the first developer they called; we were at Game Developers Conference, was it two years ago, and then I got a call from the chief financial officer of MGS and he said 'I just want you to know you cost me a billion dollars' and I said, 'we did a favour for a billion gamers'."
256MB of Vram.
256MB of Ram.
The OS used around 80MB of Ram.
But it's obvious game devs have become more lazy and incompetent. That's why we got 100GB games using 16GB+ of ram that look no better than last gen games.
let alone last gen, from an art style perspective modern games struggle to look as good as snes and ps1 games.
the technological arms race has been a disaster for game design, presentation and atmosphere
Not just any RAM, RAMBUS RAM, which implies that Sony genuinely fell for their grift after PC devs told them to fuck off like the patent trolls they are circa the 90s. It's a hot and slow mess that had zero place in gaming, and the tech alone fucks the memory more than the size. Someone on the PS3 dev team probably had an N64 and believed that was the reason the N64 punched above it's weight, and not devs going insane with optimization
>Someone on the PS3 dev team probably had an N64 and believed that was the reason the N64 punched above it's weight,
isnt the n64 famously crippled performamce wise?
The Blue ray was too expensive.
how did they fucking cram mgs4 in 256mb of ram
i have only seen a handful of games that look better than that to date
Things were better back then. Less diversity hires, less retarded women, less chud coders, etc.

There's a series on ars technica you tube called war stories about all the extreme lengths developers used to go to because of technical limitations
the power of cell
I'm more surprised by Skyrim
bethesda games ran notoriously bad on ps3
bethesda games run notoriously bad on every platform.
Skyrim borderline didn't work on PS3.
360's 512MB was more flexible than 256+256MB
>He doesn't know
PS3 is still stronger than modern consoles.
Doubt the power of the cell at your own peril
The game has to literally install and uninstall every fucking chapter.
They patched it so you don't have to do that.
>ITT tech illiterates
sony WAS really good at Min Maxin in the RAM department.

btw, PS4 planned on having 4GB of RAM, until Xbone showed they have 8GB

Where did this industry go so wrong

This is worth it if it helps us get more diverse candidates
sony were dumb. the PS2's had 16mb of memory available for textures. uncompressed. (lol).
at least sony and microshit have finally stepped up their game on that front. shame about nvidia.
