It's being reworked into an Elden Ring clone

There are things that they could take that would absolutely elevate the game to another level, especially when it comes to exploration. Art direction for example. Godtier, drop dead gorgeous and the best in the industry. Elden Ring's visuals will age like fine wine.

DD combat and from soft level design would be a dream come true tbh.

          this
give me the DD combot (with a bit more polish, like a lock on system, i mean come on even monhun got it) and DD enemy design with from's world and exploration and it's a perfect game

i wouldn't even mind if it still had mmo style fetch quests, tho i would prefer if it was better

If it did have a lock on system i would prefer if it was not the focus, crowd control is much better in DD than any game designed around lock on. I would love if they refined the soft lock on system they had in place so you can better aim your attacks and blocks.
If it had a bunch of well designed secondary quests that ties into the main themes and take advantage of the choice system, adding those MMO quests just for filler content wouldn't be too much of a problem for me, gives me an excuse to go out and kill monsters.

Elden ring doesn't look that great. It has some nice visuals, but they are mostly skyboxes or other stuff like that. The majority of the game is rather uninteresting and the areas you are actually exploring are generic ruins or castles. Same thing has been true since king's field 4.

i wish i had the dedication and focus to make incremental improvements to a project over such a long period of time.

anything more involved than cleaning my room sounds like too much of an investment with no guarantee of return

nioh took 9 years to finish. dragon's crown took the same amount of time. Games take as long as they take to finish and if problems occur during game dev or the game needs reworking, the time taken will increase.

Three years or so if not for Covid. DMC5 took them three years too but of course DD is a bigger game with RPG variables and mechanics, opposed to a linear action game. I also imagine they will try and make DD2 better in many areas, such as more dialogue choices, more roleplaying in general, doubling down on adventure aspects. Plus they have to work with the RE Engine which may not be the most ideal for a game of DD2's caliber and scope.

I hope they make the main city more enjoyable to explore and wander about. Or at least give us something like Cassardis that we can call home.

6 months to 3 years of "actual production" is common, depending on scope, scale and manpower.
The caveat is that such is only the time spent on making a end product. Before that you have pre production.
Pre production might be sketching, building sets, scouting locations/sources. Or in games case: Building a engine and trying to implement tech until/animations/system until something works.

I significant portion of Dragons Dogma's pre production was spent on making the skeleton system that allows animation implementation despite size differences

In the final game its used to make the pawns size differences work, and on a few enemies. And the climbing system most likely rely 100% on it to work.

Yes. That's exactly what people expect now for some reason.

I started playing Dragon's Dogma DA again. This time on Switch.
I played original DD on PS3, then I 100% DA on steam and now I'm playing on Switch. I think this game is forever with me. I think I will enjoy DD2 less but it might become a hit among normalfags like Elden Ring.

Covid pushed everything back and work only really just got started when it hit. Capcom may have also given Itsuno more time and money to make a bigger and better game. Maybe we'll get some teaser trailer at VGAs this year. Though Capcom's current marketing tactic is big trailer to announce and then 9 months later the game releases. Remember the leaks said it was for Q2 2022 and we're past that and only have an announcement given to fans on a 10th anniversary stream. More likely Q2 2023 at the earliest.

IDK man but I'm salivating over the kind of climb-able enemies they'll be able to make without being held back by PS3 hardware. DD is easily the RPG with the best combat on the market.
