This. Johto's level curve is fine. The issue is that there's no good wild area for grinding at the very end of the game due to Mt. Silver capping out at the high 40s but even then you can just rematch the E4. You can tell whether a ROMhack of Gen 2 gets this or not by seeing if they block off Mahogany Town before getting access to Fly.

I never saw the issue. It's only a 10 level gap between the final gym and the champion. And you don't need to a have a full team of 50s to beat the E4+Champ, far from it. The gap was a fair bit larger in RB (like 15 levels or something).

Nah everything post DS was shit. BW2 was the last time pokemon was good. 3D killed pokemon, which is odd because the 3D games we had before (Stadium 1/2, Colosseum, Gale of Darkness, the Wii pokemon stadium knockoff, etc) were all not so bad and some even great. Then again pretty sure all of those were made by devs other than gamefreak. Gamefreak's 3D is shockingly horrible and that's also when they found out they can start selling complete garbage with no features, no budget, and full of glitches and still make a profit so they stopped trying.
That said, going back to play old pokemon games is too boring as everything is too easy and I did it to death as a kid. Romhacks are the only way to enjoy pokemon now and also hardcore nuzlocke rulesets.

The current public release has the redesigned box system similar to gen 3 but you can grab the actual perpetual beta off their discord with the redesigned+expanded dex.
