You don't have to do each character's main side activity, if you don't want to. There are a few missions that use them, but more as an introduction to the activity. The cab co. story is pretty neat though and funny at times.
When you get to play as Haruka and Akiyama. Kiryu isn't bad but his city is boring and soulless. Saejima is even worse with a good chunk of time spent in prison again, then you have a mountain area that's equally boring and shit and then you get to explore the worse city in the whole game. Just a giant fucking square.
>haruka's part is a rhythm game with 3 (THREE) songs, and like 80% of it uses the first one >akiyama has no side activity, first one to get to play mahjong I guess
>Kiryu overhears rumors about a monster wandering the streets >Gets tied up with a pair of hooligans doing deals in the alleyway by Kotobuki's Drugs >Beats both of them up >As he's lecturing them, one says "What the fuck is that???" >It was just a ruse and Kiryu's distracted while they both get away >"Well, hopefully they learned their lesson." >Every cutscene ends with a comical pan to a nosferatu vampire skulking around
>Eventual follow-up sidequest has you carry an injured man to the clinic >He needs a blood transfusion but the clinic is all out of blood bags
7 has some of the best stories and characters in the series but the combat is hit or miss, its pretty easy to just spam aoe attacks for normal fights thankfully.
I like Yakuza 6, I wouldn't say it's underrated but rather overhated.

I think 7 is going to be the first Yakuza game I don't get the platinum for, grinding for the final final dungeon sounds boring
