It's a very small minority of people who actually are fans and if you're expecting to somehow woo more people into the property you're actually working counter to your objectives by creating something that's "accessible."
So these suits just end up putting themselves into a situation in which they made a product no one wanted, they've pissed off the core fanbase which media attaches to, any fans that were created are still "transient" they won't go into the original material, you're locked into creating the same derivative nonsense to an ever decreasing consumer base.
