        Honestly, I've found the worst offenders to be old gays who lost their jobs in buyouts getting relocated (due to some nonsense contract guaranteeing employment).
        At a plant I used to have to run numbers for, their ideal running speed was 37 tons per hour (please don't ask what they were running). This is accounting for downtime, wear & tear on equipment, etc which increases damn near exponentially as you raise the speed. One of these old fucks got put in charge of the place and his first brilliant thought was "well, golly gee, the maximum speed is 85 tons an hour, HOW ABOUT WE DO THAT!? CLEARLY I AM A GENIUS, HOW DID NOBODY BEFORE ME THINK OF THIS!?" Fucking fried all the cabinets controlling everything, causing 2 weeks of downtime. Shit never recovered. I'm pretty sure that asshole is still running the place.

      its probably not gonna apply to already existing games or already existing unity versions.
      so most companies will probably just stick with an older version of unity with an older license agreement.
      what will probably happen is that people will either start using older unity versions exclusively and unity will rethink their idea or they will just move to other engines.

            It's funny because Valve still allows you to install games even if they've been delisted, so basically unless they manage to talk Valve into permanently erasing the games from everyone's account they will still have to pay for every install for a year after delisting. No way to escape.

They did a purge once before when they obviously couldn't pay royalties to music companies, so a monthly fee for hosting someone's weekend game project might be no different. They had one job - take % of revenue, just like UE does. It was going to solve all their problems. Most devs were going to accept it even if this rule applied to 200k revenue. (unlike Unreal's 1million). Unity shot itself in a dick.

        no, its not.

        theres no way in hell this system can not be abused, either by hackers with spite problem, your average Ganker user, or even unity themselves

        lets say you make 200,000 dollars out of revenue of your f2p game, but 2,000,000 people install your game.

        that means you will owe unity 1,800,000 dollars, 9x more than what you earned. not to mention, whos to say unity can not inflate your install numbers in order to force you to pay?

          Assuming we're on the same page, we're talking about the Unity game by Blobygon, correct? I'm telling ya' man, this simulator game has almost everything I really wanted from a fetish game. Ambient gurgling, fat you can jiggle, customization, and of course, FEEDING. The wants are so simple, but it's hardly approached by most creators in the fat fetish sphere because making something physics based and making it GOOD takes a lot of coding and math knowledge. At least, I assume it does.

              I've never seen anything like Blobygon's game in the fetish sphere because a lot of the WG games you see people make are visual novels, RPGs that might as well be visual novels, or simple Arcade experiences in the vein of SHMUPs or score attack. What a strange world where one rich guy's decision can have cascading effects on the things you least expect.

      It's only for established devs, you're fine. See

      >Today, a large majority of Unity Editor users are currently not paying anything and will not be affected by this change. The Unity Runtime fee will not impact the majority of our developers.

      >The developers who will be impacted are generally those who have successful games and are generating revenue way above the thresholds we outlined in our blog. This means that developers who are still building their business and growing the audience of their games will not pay a fee. The program was designed specifically this way to ensure developers could find success before the install fee takes effect.

      Ok, nevermind, we're good

              If you make a game with Unity, you are locked to Unity, and you can't move to other engine without rewriting the whole game.

              And since games take years to develop (even the indie ones, at least the good indies), nobody can justify dropping years of work.

        Games cannot be removed from Steam by publishers/developers, only delisted. They will still be installable. They will still be charged.

        • 2 weeks ago
          Anonymous

          In exceptional circumstances games have been completely removed from steam, even from purchasers. This probably counts as one. Either Unity counts this as an exceptional circumstance and doesn't charge for delisted installs or Steam counts this as an exceptional circumstance and makes the game inaccessible to people who purchased it.

          Then why do I see games removed all the time? They took down Dark Souls PTDE and replaced it with the remaster for example, and now keys for that game are like $1,200 dollars.

        Wait hold the fuck up this sucks. I'm sure lots of my literally who games are made in Unity. Best case scenario is it just delays any future sequels until they move to a new engine. Worst case scenario is all updates, DLC, and even the game itself could be permanently inaccessible unless someone bothers to archive a pirated copy

          He can't. Mihoyo is protected by the CCP and already has their own fork of Unity and has repeatedly told Unity Corp to fuck off. They're in the clear.

          That's a delisting, Anon. People who already own PTDE can still install it through Steam, and that's why those keys are so expensive on resell sites. Steam only delists games, hardly ever removing them unless it's something like child porn.

  67. 2 weeks ago

    I'm a game dev and I was able to disable the events sent from my game that I think will be used to monitor "installs" in their new shitty plan.

    It can be done easily with a build pre-processor, reverting the mandatory activation of the UnityConnectSettings m_enabled variable when you
    build the game.

    The code is simple:

    void DisableAnalytics()
    {
    SerializedObject _unityConnectSettingsAsset = new SerializedObject(EditorResources.Load<Object>("ProjectSettings/UnityConnectSettings.asset"));

    var _enabled = _unityConnectSettingsAsset.FindProperty("m_Enabled");
    _enabled.boolValue = false;

    var _b = _unityConnectSettingsAsset.FindProperty("UnityAnalyticsSettings").FindPropertyRelative("m_InitializeOnStartup");
    _b.boolValue = false;

    _unityConnectSettingsAsset.ApplyModifiedProperties();

    AssetDatabase.SaveAssets();
    }

    just call this in a build pre processor with prio exec order and you're cleared.

    When the game starts, two packets are sent to these adresses:
    https://config.uca.cloud.unity3d.com
    https://cdp.cloud.unity3d

    Those packets contains the device ID, time played, country and some other info. With the above code, no more packets are sent.

    If this is indeed what's used to track users, when disabling this, they will have no way to know, and their shit is DOA.

    • 2 weeks ago
      Anonymous

      Every new release will be inspected to see if it uses Unity and illegally disables features

    Ghis really fucks over patreon h-games. They can make enogh money for this to hurt.
    Most people following a game will reinstall it multiple times as the game gets updated.
    Sometimes they allow a separate free/demo version either with limited content or a past build. Those extra installs will add up.
    And with these small h-games you don't often have only 1 dev, so that 200k+ is split between a small handful of people.

    I was going to make a Unity h-game, but now I'll have to use godot or something else because this could financially fuck me.

      It renders the platform literally unusable, there is no upper cost limit and installs are trivial to fabricate. If your game breaches 200k in revenue Unity can turn around and charge you 10 million in installation fees because they or someone else ran a botnet on your installation stats for a few days.

      • 2 weeks ago

        it doesnt. patreon games are free and dont charge money.
        nothing will happen to free h-games.
        only those that are sold on steam need to worry.
        also most h-games use renpy instead of unity so most is a moot point.

          No. If you make updates to your "free" game conditional on donations on Patreon, it is automatically considered a commercial game and you are subject to the same rules as everyone else. This applies to both Unity and Unreal Engine.
          If you offer the game for free on Patreon, however, and the tiers are only symbolic for those who want to help you, then the game is considered free.

    • 2 weeks ago
      Anonymous

      But it's not as if Patreon games have one update a day, most take months to update and when it comes to Unity, there's probably some way of creating an update that doesn't require a fresh install.
      And contrary to what these anons said:

      But a donation isnt the same as buying the game.

      >Ghis really fucks over patreon h-games. They can make enogh money for this to hurt.
      it doesnt.
      free versions of unity dont pay the fees.
      the fees only apply to games that charge a price or have micro transactions.
      as long as a game is freely distributed its not subject ot the new price changes.

      games monetized on Patreon are not considered "free" games and have to conform to Unity's TOS. As soon as one of Patreon's tiers involves access to the game, it is automatically considered a commercial project.
      The only way to escape this is if you offer the game for free on Patreon and the tiers are symbolic things.

      what is hearthstones filesize? It's time for Activision to give back to the gaming community

    You were here a month ago.

      the fucked up thing is part of the crack on unity games is removing the phoning back home
      so somehow yet again this doesn't affect piracy but fucks normal legitimate users

    So...how will this work with Unity games released on GOG? I mean I doubt they considered that because even the IP statement is fucking retarded but still.

    Reminder the 20 cents thing is just if you're using the cheapest version of Unity (indie devs)

    Actual big boy devs using the expensive tools only pay 1 cent per download past a certain point and like 0.005 cents if its being installed in a 3rd world country, so they won't even feel it. This is just another way to attack indie games so you're forced to play AAA slop.

      No one cares about the money it's about how Unity is going to be charging people based on installs and instances of usage.

    >Unity forces developers to connect to Unity servers to even work on their games
    >This decision backfires and they go horribly bankrupt
    >People celebrate because now they don't have to pay money for people installing their games
    >Servers close down
    >Everyone's Unity editor stops working so they can't even make games with Unity

    It really is a scorched earth method huh? Either they get away with it and reel in the big bucks or Unity gets wiped off the internet.
