A very short concept demo of a game he wanted to make ended up being one of the most influential games of the 2010s, and he basically did all of it himself.

The Ruins section was released as a demo. A smart thing to do because it showed Kickstarter backers what they were about to sign onto.

Because he's not one person, one person couldn't have possibly made Undertale.

Toby is a cool dude who knows how to write likeable and memorable characters, compose really good music, I fricking hate these threads that act like any joe shmoe is capable of those two things without years of experience and a genuine passion for it. Toby isn't a game designer, Undertale came to be from him fricking around in game maker, the draw of undertale isn't in it's gameplay it's the music and characters that people love so much and he knows how to do these two tings because of his passion for making music and his work on Homestuck, say what you will about Homestuck, it's fanbase, and everything past act 5, it has some of the best dialogue in any webcomic no doubt some of Hussie's writing skills rubbed off on Toby.

tl;dr the average dumbshit with a coding degree still isn't capable of making something like undertale

Too add onto that, Toby also knows how to handle internet fame with grace and he doesn't take himself super seriously, he's like the polar opposite of Phil Fish

Toby experienced the rise and fall of Homestuck firsthand. The only reason I have hope for deltarune is because he knows what pitfalls to avoid.
That he has an ending in sight means he's already better than Hussie.

Took the words right out of my mouth, I was just about to point out the fact that Toby doesn't let his homosexual fans run his art, I'm sure he learned all the good and bad from Hussie.

videogames have too much technical overhead over other forms of expression, unless you have a particularly novel interactive premise 9/10 you'd be better off taking up writing or learning to draw, if you have friends make a short film.

      Anonymous

Nobody's gonna watch my short film outside of a couple of snobs in some dingy hipster mini-theater.
Millions are ready to play a short video game, even if its premise is unconventional.
I am not necessarily talking about money, or even fame, but if I do want people to experience the thing I poured my heart and soul into and be affected by it, I'd rather go with a video game in the modern age than any kind of movie. Or something form of online content, I guess. I guess it could be a YouTube film, but everything sped up so much in the last 5 years that it's gonna be forgotten in 2 days even if it's good, there is too much information. You can at least try to savor a video game.

you make it seem like the average video game/visual novel gets more than a few days of attention and discussion before dying off. the community of undertale/deltarune obsessives aren't as big as you think either. the internet is its own echo chamber

9/10 times nobody will notice your indie game exists, that's why you make sequels and spin-offs so that eventually people people start to notice.
