It is fixed, I dunno why that guy said procgen.

I'm not the biggest fan myself because I find them to be a little grindy in ways that I don't enjoy, but I do enjoy the sandbox that typically comes with them. Zomboid has a fun sandbox though I personally only really like the first year or so of that game - kind of wish it had a "patient 0" type scenario where more of Knox county gets fricked over time.

My biggest problem with Zomboid is that the zombies are simultaneously not threatening and way too lethal, which encourages just sitting in a house once you solve the very easy problems of food + water.

I really like how it incentivizes to not just base in one spot and farm potatoes for the rest of your life (fricking zomboid), and forces to move and adapt.
Even with personal teleport we had to make smaller bases here and there.

Yeah my friends and I are in Manufacturing and we're discussing where to put 'waystations' of sorts around the map, though it seems like any place you put a crafting bench down at can have portal storms.

            >Another good example of a game breaking the mould is Boneraiser Minions for the vampire Survivors style game genre.

No, that's an example of a generic game being slightly different or having its own identity. You don't use "breaking the mold" for things that are generic but slightly different. "Breaking the mold" is for things that are different.

No, it's certainly different than vampire survivors in that you do things besides walk around a map and have everything die around you with zero player involvement.

Started it recently with a friend, I think we're playing it wrong like I believe you're supposed to make multiple bases around and instead we're just wandering. I don't like the "discover recipe" thing, adds nothing to the game. The inventory/crafting being a single menu is way too crowded

The discover recipe thing is cute but could definitely be better, I agree. The core stuff in the game all is a lot of fun so I don't really have any serious complaints.

Is this a point-to-point type game where you're supposed to escape or is it an infinite survival grind?

      Anonymous

The goal is to escape, yep. Items do not respawn indefinitely to discourage perma camping in the same areas in the facility, though items DO respawn in the 'portal worlds' which are usually dangerous to navigate. So far there are 3 main areas in the game - offices (extended tutorial) Manufacturing (where the real game starts) and Offices (Haven't gotten there yet but I was told it gets mega spooky)

I'm not wild about crafting survival because I got tired of them years ago but one that's this Half-Life-inspired honestly sounds pretty fun. is the environment pretty cool? how does the game work? is it open-ended or do you make your way through the setting semi-linearly?

The environment is honestly very well designed and I am not joking when I say the game reminds me of Dark Souls in that you open up various shortcuts to help navigate the facility, as that is your real form of progression besides just making cooler stuff.

It takes a lot inspiration from Project Zomboid, especially with it's class system and "doing stuff repeatedly until you level up the skill"

Unlike Zomboid though, it's actually fun.

Is this game actually good or is this another lethal company situation?

Lethal Company situation? It's a whole dev team working on this game, not one guy. Don't really think they are comparable.

Absolutely, dude. I have been very pleasantly surprised with a number of indie games lately, as generally I think survival crafting shit sucks major ass.
Only games I ever enjoyed with it were 7 days to die and Palworld up to this point, but Abiotic Factor is absolutely the best game in that genre, as it isn't about just finding a base and sitting there indefinitely because the game devs didn't actually program an end game or anything to do. Another good example of a game breaking the mould is Boneraiser Minions for the Vampire Survivors style game genre.

You really don't want to be called a shill huh

Here's your (you) now go away or back to upvote tland, the adults are talking. These guys don't need any paid shills for them when they simply made a great game. I'll gladly shill for a game this good instead of sequels with utterly baffling design choices like Hades 2 and Helldivers 2.

    >everything is ridiculously tedious to do
    >game says you can play solo but it's a complete slog meant for 4 players minimum.

Friends tricked me into getting it. It was just like every other incomplete EA survival game.
It's one of those mid games that tricks you into thinking its fun because everything is fun with friends.

The only tedious thing is boiling tainted water to make usable water.

        Anonymous

Cooking and such in general is a bit too tedious at times but yeah boiling water is definitely the worst, only getting 1/4th return on every pot boiled is ass.

Later (I think starting with Labs) you can make water filters that just skip that whole ordeal.

        Don't?
You can pick up water coolers and take them to your base.
I didn't boil dirty water a single time, it wasn't even till I unlocked Water Filters for the barrel that I even realised dirty water was a thing.

My group usually just boils water when someone is cooking anyway.

          >fun with friends
stripped from that tere's a lot that sucks about this game
the enemies are dumb, uninteresting, or downright infuriating and un-fun (little bouncing enemies in particular). The minigames are tedius and unnecessary

what they did right is a linear approach, the interesting take on the day night cycle (which isn't really THAT innovative, just very functional), and the tone/setting. It's a mixed game but it has the potential to be something fascinating, fun, and well thought out. Can break either way.

lmao this guy has a skill issue fighting pests
Just wait for them to jump into the air, they hang for a second and then you can just bash them with a blunt weapon for an instant kill

i feel like when i reach this point it's going to be very cathartic.

Anon, here's the best part, the Vacuum is something you can craft in the very first area of the game, and the electric net launcher is generally able to be acquired right after the very first area of the game.

I gotta start this game over and do it right. I clearly came into it with the wrong idea.

              Anonymous

Almost every single type of enemy I have encountered so far has some kind of weakness or specific action when it's a good idea to attack them. For the jumpy pests, it's right as they rise into the air. If you have Blunt Weapons level 3 you can charge up a power attack with right click and that should one shot them.
For the quadrupedal dogs, they can only run in a straight line once they charge up their purple energy, from what I have seen, so you can make them run into a wall. They also die to 2-3 headshots with basically anything.

You are supposed to use all the tools you have at your disposal, I find. Stealth to get in range to land a headshot with a ranged weapon or throw a slushy grenade at someone (seriously make slushy grenades they're op as shit early on) or just being able to anticipate how the enemy will attempt to attack you and dodge it.

You need to start thinking like a member of the science team and craft some wacky bullshit to deal with them better.

throwing nets on them kicks ass. if there's more solutions out there like that i'll be happy to encounter them.

            Anonymous

You can eventually craft a vacuum weapon that can suck them up and turn them into a projectile you can fire at other enemies. There's also an electrified net launcher so you can do it from even further away.

Wait till see (lol) those semi-invisible shits. Not only they are fast as frick, they can attack both at range and in melee.
But other enemies are really cool (even if a lot of them are nothing creative and similar to enemies from other games). I really hope that they'll make even more of them and keep them interesting.

      What's wrong with playing solo?
Once you craft a trolly you can move around tons of stuff even without friends.
I don't feel as held back by lack of friends compared to FOTM friend games
