Most of what we know about Yasuke comes from the Shincho Koki and a smattering of writings from foreign missionaries, none of whom claim he held Samurai status. He was certainly in the employment of Oda Nobunaga as a weapon bearer and was given a wakizashi (short sword) by the Daimyo, something Lockley states, but there is no explicit evidence to suggest he was made Samurai. At no point does he appear to have been given a fief of his own or presented with the two swords that signified the Samurai rank in the same manner as Will Adams was later by Tokugawa Ieyasu. The position of weapon bearer is a fairly insignificant one similar to that of sandal bearer that Toyotomi Hideyoshi held as a peasant for Nobunaga himself before becoming Samurai under the great lord. The most we can say for certain is that he was in Nobunaga’s employ as a low level servant but was well liked, or at least that Nobunaga found him interesting. I do think it likely that had Nobunaga not been betrayed and killed by Akechi Mitsuhide he likely would have been raised to the rank of Samurai by Nobunaga as it was not particularly uncommon for foreigners to be given the rank, though most appear to have been Korean or Chinese in origin.
I don't have a real problem with him being portrayed as a samurai since it's obvious ubi is playing with creative liberty to some degree, and media loves to portray him as such. But I'm not claiming he was a samurai under Oda, that is nonsense.. JP wiki states he was a member of the kashin which just means a lot of things but I couldn't find the direct source, and the kanji itself wasn't the one used for kashin 家臣, it was kerai 家来, which can mean a retainer or a servant. What I think is most likely is that he was a high or middle ranking member of Oda's court, he was also potentially earmarked for a promotion to being a samurai according to contemporary records due to his physicality. But it's clear nobu took a liking to him due to the vanity aspect of seeing a giga nigga for the first time.
Serious question: what changed for me?
I mean, when I saw things like Mace Windu, I never thought of anything that came close to “We waz Jedi” in the past, nor when I saw other black characters in media like Static Shock or Blade. But now I'm so skeptical and jaded that every time I see something like this in this thread, I immediately cringe and think it's just pure, vapid pandering.
