So just because it's a fictional world means everything need to be made up? Why stop at planes then, why should this fictional world have anything in common with real life? Why have countries at war, humans speaking English, planet Earth? That's frickin wierd, man.

                Anonymous

you have a point to a degree but it's a matter of particulars. if you consider it like evolution, there's going to be more universes with earth, with countries at war, using jet fighters, than universes that settled on the exact plane design of the F4 phantom for example.

                Anonymous

They are still humans speaking human languages, might as well be flying an F-4. Nothing about that changes the fact that not all the planes that they fly and not all the events that take place need to have a real life counterpart, they only need to be internally consistant with the established story and world.

                Anonymous

there is a huge leap between 'humans existing' and 'using this exact model of American fighter plane'
and I think it's obvious that the use of real world languages is really just so they don't have to subtitle the entire game for everyone on the planet.

I do not find using real world planes to be internally consistent with their world.

                Anonymous

AC is an alternate reality where defense companies produce planes without any loyalty to individual countries, all planes have worldwide standardized control schemes allowing you to hop between any of them and getting a job in a jet is so easy each side can throw hundreds of pilots into jets to fight on the front. Not to mention the super weapons every country just has lying around.

                Anonymous

Just because you think it's improbable? I could keep listing the similarities between the games and real life, like the color on the sky or the the number of digits on character's hands, yet only the existance of planes based on the real ones is where you draw the line.
Besides, the guns in Star Wars are based on real life guns, that doesn't mean they can't be consistant with the their world and exist alongside light sabers.

                Anonymous

because those things are entirely reasonable to expect.
and yeah, star wars guns are a good example, because they're based on, then modified. they aren't just using a literal AK47 or whatever, and referring to it as a Kalashnikov

                Anonymous

                >because those things are entirely reasonable to expect
Then why do you draw the line at jets? How probable their existance is is irrelevant to their consistancy with the lore.
As for the Star Wars analogy, there aren't any real planes in AC3, all of them are either based on real ones or completely fictional. Does that satisfy your standards?

                >Then why do you draw the line at jets?
i'm drawing the line at the specifics of the model of plane. It's the difference between a cellphone and, say, an Apple iPhone 15. If you've got a world with comparable technology levels to us, it makes sense that they have cellphones, but if that world doesn't have the United States of America, Steve Jobs, and the Apple corporation, it doesn't make sense to have iPhones as their brand of cellphone.
If you can't see that difference then idk what to say to you.

Why can't the humans of the AC world design an F-4?

                Anonymous

because any particular design is the result of the personalities, wants, desires, and failings of individuals and collective organizations, and the goals and requirements they have when they set out to design a plane.
there's so many fricking little things that have to be identical to end up with the same design it just becomes ridiculous.

                Anonymous

OK, so if a game were to have an F-4, it would necesitate the existance of USA, McDonnell Douglas, Vietnam, WWII, The Holocaust(?), Adolph Hitler, WWI, etc. following the chain of causation. Let's say all the criteria were fulfilled in the world of AC, and they designed the F-4. Then they would go on to design a plane that never existed in real life, except according to you they wouldn't, because there was no need for such plane in real life, and therefore it couldn't happen in a game that's based on it.
Same exact logic aplies to literally everying in fiction, the fact that the characters all look and act human, live on a human planet, speak human languages, everything. All of it could only happen under the very specific circumstances on Earth over billions of years of evolution. Yet you accept that they are human but don't accept that they designed an F-4.

So why aren't you also complaining that an Earth with different geography still evolved humans indistinguishable from us? The list of coincidences is even longer there.

That's the question I'm asking you, I'm not the one arguing that it's inconsistant with the established wolrd or story. The fact that they are similar to us doesn't necesitate that their origin must be identical to ours.

Anon, most of the fictional planes are from AC3, which is the game set in a cyberpunk future.
The XFA-27 was from AC2, which was the second Playstation game. It's the special unlockable plane for that game. The Falken, Wyvern, Nosferatu, Fenrir, and Morgan also fill that niche. The F-15S is just a weird F-15, and a bunch of the AC3 planes are just weird variants or spins on proposed or experimental aircraft. The Night Raven and Geopelia are plot devices, and the Aurora is based on actual US space planes which are still in operation.

The original design are reserved for super experimental planes, usually designed by famous mechanical designers. Also real life jet fighters are already cool enough.

Because the designers have not had to actually test thier ideas against harsh real world aerodynamics and making an entire roster of planes from thier inexperience would make something that comes out looking like parody. By keeping the ficitonal planes to a desert on top of the pilenof real planes, they keep a mystique of planes that look really cool and people wishing to fly them. If they had to make the whole roster like that illusion would break.

So here's a /k/ anon doing exactly what you wanted though.

What are some lesser-known games like AC that you guys enjoy?
I've just finished up Secret Weapons Over Normandy, which doesn't seem to be talked about very much. It's pretty great except for the control scheme, which is just slightly awkward compared to Ace Combat especially considering that 4 came out 2 years before SWON did.
Thinking about giving the Airforce Delta games a try next but the aircraft handling in the first mission of Airforce Delta Strike (happened to already have it downloaded) feels awful, very heavy and almost on rails. Not sure I want to bother with the rest of the series if they all play like that, but maybe it's just the starter plane?

      Anonymous

Id like to give airforce delta strike a try someday mostly because jun tsukasa did character designs

      Anonymous

AFDS plane handling gets better when you unlock later aircraft, although the first few are equally dismal. also, it has a gimmick that you should know of coming from Ace Combat: planes each have a certain optimum speed where their handling is at its best, so in a turnfight you don't necessarily want to slow down (unlike in AC where the narrowest turning circle always comes at the lowest speed). i'd stick at it: AFDS is a fricking weird game. i'd love to know if some of the story makes more sense in the Japanese version and got cut by translators, or if it really is just that weird.

Also, this just goes to show that ace combat players think flight sims are boring, because the flying in ace combat IS boring.

They've never stopped to think maybe ac is the problem

ace combat is an arcade game with a flying theme, not a flight simulator. it is fun when played that way: on the fly, come up with an optimal course through the level to get the highest score in the lowest time. you've bought ridge racer and now you're complaining that it's boring because in your real car you have to account for pedestrians, speed limits, and traffic lights.

        Anonymous

        >it is fun
It's not. It's mind numbingly boring and a tedious 20,000 score test. It's so boring that no even ever plays the free flight, which even itself is for some reason timed, probably because they thought no one would be deranged enough to play it for more than a few minutes. The landings are so fricking simple you can skip them, which most people do to. All same ac players admit the gameplay is the worst thing about the series

          Anonymous

it's not worth trying to set it out for you because you're working back from the conclusion: no shit, a game about racking up points by destroying everything on screen as fast as possible isn't fun when there's nothing on screen! ridge racer isn't fun when you're the only car on the road and there's no time attack!
I'd actually agree about some of the score attack missions being a weak point: sometimes - in AC4 for example - they can drag on when you don't want to take out literally every target, if you're just playing for the plot, when you've got enough points for an S rank but now there's 10 minutes of "just don't crash" until you can move on. But they already fixed that: in 7 the timers are shorter, in Zero you move on automatically when you hit the target score.

Takeoff, landing, and refueling are little bonus stage gimmicks to an arcade game, they're not supposed to be a simulation: you're thinking of Ace Combat as an oversimplified version of DCS rather than as a complicated version of Afterburner or 1942. (But if you'd like to rant about how 1942 doesn't even trust you with pitch control, be my guest.)

            Anonymous

You sure have a hard time understanding that ac is simply not fun to play, in any shape or form. There's nothing challenging about it. Without physics of any kind the player is simply mindlessly holding back on the thumbstick pressing missile every few seconds.

okay then how does it have so many sales and fans if it's not fun enough to attract them?

It's funny you're trying to use that as an example, yet I love 2D shoot em ups, as they're actually fast paced and engaging and are meant to be played for only a few minutes at a time. UN Squadron and Turn andBurn NFZ are some of the best games on the snes, 3D rail shooters like star fox 64 are also great, as is omega boost.

Ace Combat, especially modern ace combat simply fails at being a fun arcade game, maybe if it was restricted to a linear rail format like starfox on a pathed level the whole time the gameplay might be saved. But fully open world with NO physics is NOT a good combination.

NTA but that's cool, I like Thunder Force myself. Star Fox though? I wouldn't want AC to play like it. It's a dead franchise for a reason.
That said, I do hope they revise the flight model in AC8. It would make the game better, but I'm not going to say it was boring since I earnestly enjoyed it when I played it.

Where do they even go after AC7?

                Toward AC3? Something inbetween.

I like it, it's a specific niche kind of arcade gameplay: maintaining an awareness of your position in 3d space (usually with the camera tracking your target, so you're viewing from some very odd angles), planning a route through all the possible targets, and trying to remove them as quickly as possible. You've gotta do more planning than in an on-rails shooter (nobody's going to accidentally fly into the ground doing a vertical loop in SF64...), and the trade-offs involved are different (missing a target doesn't mean missing the points, but it does mean losing time). It's simultaneously very forgiving to the beginner while letting you challenge yourself if you want to - anyone can finish every mission with a C rank and 10 seconds left on the timer, but can you beat Zero in 45 seconds? Can you destroy everything on the map in Invincible Fleet before the time is up?
If you don't find that fun, that's fine, but that's your real problem with ace combat - that it's a specific style of arcade game, not the fact that it's a bad flight simulator. They were going to make a Xevious game with Ace Combat 4's engine at one point ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YhWbXfJz15g ) and you'd find it just as boring if it was released.

Also, this just goes to show that ace combat players think flight sims are boring, because the flying in ace combat IS boring.

They've never stopped to think maybe ac is the problem

This has to be cleared out of my system. One of the worst video game series I've ever seen is probably Ace Combat. I was only halfway through 7 when I had to put it down because it was making my blood boil.

I don't get why everyone on the internet and in every single meme video on YouTube appears to be so obsessed with it, as if it's the greatest thing ever.

The primary male character "count" is a beta man who just serves to make MC appear superior in comparison; it's a fricking shallow wannabe flight sim hidden under a disguise but we're talking about the contents not the gameplay itself
One minute of story development is followed by fifteen minutes of ridiculous plot twists and unrealistic character development. The cast as a whole is fricking moron queer anime McGee and his fanboy gang. Don't get me started on fricking halfwits circlejerking about how revolutionary our main pilot is. Holy frick

Doing large scale PVE with Ganker and /ACG/ was the most fun I had in that console generation. I particularly liked the Area 88 crossover.
