I guess she being the villain ended up being too obvious. But the case was pretty strange in some aspects.

God that hi-def looks unnatural, I somehow didn't mind it in the first trilogy, but this looks so off. I liked Apollo's standalone game, the smuggling case was a good one.

Did you like DD and/or SoJ more?

Not him, but DD was the worst in the series for me. SoJ was better, but not by much, the final case that neatly wrapped up Apollo's story and gave him more depth was great. The best part of DD was the kino DLC case.
        >the gigahomie transformation

You say that but funny enough, Apollo's remaster is the most clean out of all of them because it's just taking the sprites cleaning them, vs the original trilogy where it's just unnaturally replacing the sprites with their artwork.

I have issues with DD too, but being the "worst" is minor cause this series is consistently great.
The DLC case in DD is definitely great, unironically SoJ's DLC is weakest in the whole game, just by proxy of how much better everything else was, but also, me personally The main game made Maya a lot less annoying, and tried to be mature, the DLC reverts everyones everyones development back to status quo just to frick around

            Anonymous

Mature mommy maya is best maya, I will agree that SOJs DLC was largely forgettable. I say DD is the weakest for me simply because of the last case, being forced to used athena's stupid gimic was mind numbing when they established that the killer in the past got stabbed in the hand. ASK HIM TO TAKE OFF HIS FRICKING GLOVE! That's all they had to do! I digress, I also liked that SoJ's tone was more mature, you literally saw the only onscreen death in the series. Everyone's always dead by the time you find them.

AJ's remaster looks better than the original trilogy, it becomes more evident with the flashback case.

Personally I won't know. I bought Apollo DS used and paid full price for digital versions of two games that later got lumped in a cheaper cleaner package, no way I'm giving them more money to replay something I spent so much on. Got enough of that from Squeenix bundling KH.

That's been my conclusion seeing pics posted here. The artwork just doesn't work for 1-3 since they were drawn to be made into sprites and lack detail as a result.

I think he's referring to the uncanny details such as the thick linework, bizarre shading, and muted colors.
That doesn't make it any less official or even bad, per se, but it's likely the artist drew these with the intent of easy transition to a pixel format.
Kind of like how Michelangelo's David has a disproportionally large head.

nah, there was no such thing
the only parts that were "made with pixel format in mind" the parts where the artist got lazy and drew like shit
because details would get nuked anyway when the resolution was lowered to 100p or whatever the frick it was

Yeah, I don't get the mature shit.
There's a little pretense of her being a master, but she otherwise behaves the exact same and does all the same sprite routines in 3D.
And then there's the DLC where she is literally the exact same character as og trilogy.

Ah, not I meant 4/Apollo Justice is the only one I did enjoy.
Haven't played DD and SoJ since they came but I remember not enjoying the seance and therapy gimmicks, Simon was ok but Nahyuta (or whatever) was annoying, Apollo became a linda cluster frick of a character and he still can't escape Phoenix's shadow, didn't dislike Athena but felt like they didn't know what to do with her in SoJ...maybe if one day I'll find the motivation (since it seems we might not get a new one in a while) to replay them to see if I change mind

Replaying them with a cleaner mind might help, SoJ in particular did a really good job in a lot of areas.

I liked this case a lot, the entire atmosphere of the investigation really does a great job of making you feel like it's been 7 years. Especially with Ema.
The Noodle Stand mystery was genuinely interesting, and Eldoon was kino.
The climax of this case in particular was wild when you think about it. Wocky got lucky, as annoying as he was.

The thing I didn't like is that it doesn't say anything about certain old characters that suddenly are out completely out of the picture in the 7 year gap, namely Edgeworth and Gumshoe, specially the later since he appears in the flashback case but the game doesn't even hint what was of him afterwards.

It's been 7 years, the idea is that everything is new now.
We know later on in DD that Edgeworth became Chief Prosecutor, so he's not just readily available for cases.
Gumshoe was a cute reference, we know in SoJ that Edgeworth still references him so he was probably busy or taking off while Ema was the main detective of the area.

To be fair, the argument in the original was about Juniper's dress anyway, it was kind of weird that the subject changed to talking about liking girly things in general.
I don't really see it as censorship, just changing dialogue, since it's still about the same idea.

Sure, but these rereleases should be all about preserving the games as they were, just presented in HD. People playing it now should get the same experience as the people that played them on DS.

I agree, i just don’t think censoring is the right word to use.
The fact that they put that disclaimer makes this whole thing dumb anyway.

No, It's not strange. If you remember during the moods matrix section, when talking about the dress, it made Robin feel happy for some reason. This leads down the rabbit to the reveal of Robin being a girl. Which leads to Robin being labeled as a suspect, because Juniper was suspected because the voice on the recording tape was female.

The fact that DD, without really mentioning it, expands on AJ by implying that black locks means Kristoph intentionally made himself forget why he killed Shadi out of delusion just makes him better in my opinion

      Anonymous

I thought the implication was that Kristoph was in denial about his resentment and jealousy over Phoenix

        Anonymous

It's kind of a mix of both Kristoph clearly openly says that both Shadi and Wright deserve their fates, but he's in extreme delusion and denial about jealousy and his knee jerk reaction to finding Shadi out of nowhere, I mean really, Spark Brushell is fricking lucky that he made it out alive

      Anonymous

      >black locks means they intentionally made themselves forget
That's what they explain black locks as? I always interpreted that scene simply being that the character could not be broken no matter how much you threw evidence at them. To reinforce how sociopathic the character was, that he viewed everyone and everything as beneath him including the law. Of course some pathetic bum in rags isn't going to get him to confess to anything.

        Anonymous

It's less about intentionally making them forget, and more that, they have a hidden memory that they forgot for a specific reason.
In DD, it was Athena's trauma memory of potentially being the one who killed her mother

In AJ's case however, it basically is Kristoph being stubborn and sociopathically egotistical that he erased every single trace that he has no reason to believe anything actually happened, making the idea of a jury decision, break his mentality

      Anonymous

Gaslighting yourself into forgetting/dismissing your wrong actions is a pretty good tactic for being able to convince many people that you didn't do it.
Like when I skipped school I mentally convinced myself that I went there and had no problem lying to my mother's face about it.

      Anonymous

      >The Black Locks
Things are being misconstrued; the Black Locks are just locks that can be broken by traditional means. In Kristoph's case his pride and ego would simply not allow anyone to get the better of him. His Will was Unshakable and the Truth would never leave his lips.

Whereas in Athena's her black locks were involuntary. She blocked out the memory but the Truth was still there somewhere. She couldn't tell the truth until those memories were uncovered.

I started the game the other day, I like the menu theme of the collection.
I also noticed that they put all the episodes in the bottom with their images in full, strange, but i guess none of them have noticeable spoilers.
I noticed they created new ones for AJ, that's cool, that game didn't have case title screens, is there any way to properly view them? I didn't go to the gallery yet so I don't know if they are available there to see.

It's possible but Nintendo consoles tend to have it anyway so I would say AA7 being release multiplat could happen.

It doesn't matter which one you play first, it's made by 2 teams and have their positives and negatives in both gameplay and artstyle direction.
If you want a release order, they came back to back, it was Dual Destinies, then GAA 1, then Spirit of Justice and then GAA2.

Me personally, I started with GAA Chronicles, and then did 2nd trilogy

The series will probably remain multiplatform, also GAA is a spin-off whose connections to the main series are kinda loose and really add nothing to the experience of the main games.

The AA side of the game is pretty basic, there's no investigation segments and not a lot of evidence but the game did start the multiple-witness testimonies that are in The Great Ace Attorney. There's also a spell grimoire and you have to present the specific spells that might've been used which is pretty cool. I would recommend it if you really want more Ace Attorney but the Layton parts of the game can be a slog and the grand reveal of the Layton mystery plot is just as moronic as every other Layton game. Some of the girls are cute too.

I like that Klavier doesn't need to be smacked around to be a good prosecutor, he already is great morally.
I guess because of that, he doesn't have much going on, his band argument boogaloo was pretty funny, and his involvement of what his brother did was cool but you would think he would pursue it further, outside of bullying Vera

It is worth noting though that they did try to do something in DD where he was a big fan of the professor who died in Turnabout Academy, Professor Means was the danger phoenix was worried about, he was pushing ""Dark Age of the Law", which professor Courte, was against and pursuing more good. I feel Klavier could've had a bigger part but he alteast helped encourage Apollo and athena

And lasty in SoJ That very minor reference to him when Apollo talked to Dhurke about his life progression, could've went more indepth but I guess the AA team is too stubborn about revealing end game spoilers, it;s why they refuse to let Apollo know about Trucy

I enjoyed Apollo Justice when I first played it but coming back to it all these years later really heightened my appreciation for it. Being concerned with telling a good mystery went a long way into being invested in each case and even when the solution is obvious they don't drag their feet too much. Most investigations ending with a dramatic sting really leaves you hype for the trail that's to come.

Going from AJ to DD is so fricking miserable.... plot and character don't even attempt to make sense. Character are just incompetent for the sake of the gameplay. I do not enjoy Phoenix Wright as a character. His bumbling and lack of confidence as he bluffs his way to victory really isn't endearing anymore. It just drags trails on when the solution is often so braindead. People may say Apollo was straight and boring but what I loved about his character was that the was rarely dissonance between the player and him. When evidence was needed to be presented he pretty much took charge, there was no brief pause where he monologs ,"Jeez I wonder what the frick I'm suppose to do with this. Better talk out my ass and hope something clicks."

Phoenix's whole thing becoming "bluffing" in the later games is weird, and might've just been the devs trying to cram in a poker reference. Old Phoenix never really bluffed as much as he was just bringing up "out of the box" ideas no one had thought of but was plausible

I felt that in AJ, Pheonix Wright was generally the spotlight of any scene he was in, it doesn't help that AJ made him somewhat mysterious but DD kind of got rid of all that.

Ace Attorney's entire shtick, is that inner thoughts are a characters real personality.
When you aren't playing as Phoenix in DD and SoJ, you can get some of his AJ personality.

The problem however, is that DD is fricking moronic with when each case takes place

If you play it PROPERLY, Phoenix's development makes a lot more sense.

For fricks sake, Case 1 is in the fricking middle of Case 4, that's how moronic it is.

This collection lets you play any case you want, so if you revisit DD in this collection, I can gurantee you will have a better time if you do it in this order:

      >Case 2
      >DLC Case
      >Case 3
      >First Half of Case 4

The big advertisement of the game is that there was a court-room bombing.
They want the first case to be about that bombing.
But then they needed to shuffle in why that bombing happened and the aftermath, with the filler and character introduction cases sprinkled.

To a normal person, and people who have just accepted the circumstances, it's pretty normal, but to someone who is coming off of Apollo Justice, specifically how Phoenix was developed, it's going to feel weird.

You can play the game normally, I think it's fine as some cases rely on you doing that. But if Wright's development starts feeling weird, just keep that in mind.
I think he's fine personally, when you aren't him, he still feels mysterious

2 started the trend of having cases out of order (Only the first 2 cases). Then 3 introduced flashback cases, then when Investigations came out and they took it to the extreme with every case out of order besides the last. Investigations 2 doesn't have this problem, but Dual Destinies brings it back again. I guess Yamazaki liked doing it that way, but he has left Capcom.

I've met real lawyers like this. They were also cute. Pity the overheads and paperwork put me off continuing that career path because it's definitely about to be automated.
What shocks me though was how accurate this game was. I was not expecting that. Sure there's some niggles, the 3 day trial shit, the glossing over paperwork. But they often did very very well with how evidence is kinda handled in court. It's not that different at all and is actually quite fun when dealing with questions of FACT. The problem is the questions of LAW which are not in the game at all... Question: why isn't there an AA which deals with the semantics of law more with facts and detective work?
That can be fun if you do it correctly and there's not enough of that aspect in these games.

I mean they even make a long running joke about this aspect (pic related) which is 99% of what lawyers actually deal with (very little questions of fact, it's mainly law and it's construction and how they apply to the facts - which is very much done poorly by even the judges of high courts in all countries because it's fricking hard).
I'm guessing translator issues are the problem here.

Ace Attorney is supposed to be a mystery game with a lawyer veneer, the point is less about doing actual lawyering and more about solving mysteries. Actually arguing over interpretation of the law falls outside the realm of solving murder mysteries, but I do remember there being some cases where you either get your defendant off on technicality or have to find some other way to get the true culprit indicted because of legal technicalities. 3-2 comes to mind with the whole double jeopardy thing.

                >Ace Attorney is supposed to be a mystery game with a lawyer veneer,
It's more a detective adventure game really.
But it could be more if there wasn't the translator issue. It would be a pain in the ass to try a question of law type game when:
                1. Questions of law are treated completely different between Japan (Civil Law) and Common Law countries.
                2. The linguistic issues are exaggerated by the wording/interpretation issues with translation.

You would also have to dramatically simplify it and make it fun to normal people, not word/philosophy autists like me.
But you could address it with a simplified code and then apply specific facts to that specific code and work out which part of the code is actually relevant.
You already half do this mechanic with pressing. Matching statements to facts. Instead of statements you could do it with legal code particulars.

I just think it's always one particular criminal law problem, rather than a more complex array of criminal law issues.
And you could go further with not actually having an out for the defendant, but merely reducing his sentence or conviction by lowering the level of applicable law to the facts.

                >merely knock back fact A, reducing murder to manslaughter

Manslaughter in particular is peculiar with legal issues. It's quite complex and relies on inferences of intention to differentiate types of manslaughter.

Another thing is discovery. You could do that in a fun way, by forcing Franny to cough up the goods somehow on technicalities.

I feel like a really clever designer would retool the Logic Chess concept and build the whole game around it, a battle of ideas on a chessboard that unfolds like a lightweight, fast SRPG. Be cool if someone put that spin on it.

You guys need to understand something about Spirit of Justice if you haven’t played it yet, especially coming off of DD being about Phoenix’s return.
    They advertised this game as:
    >Phoenix goes to a country alone that fricking hates Lawyers, uh oh.
    >Use a spirit water table to see final moments, similar to channeling
    >Maya will finally reunite with Nick, the reveal you’ve been waiting for
    >oh yeah, also Apollo and Athena are in America whatever

This is a technical minor spoiler with no special reveal, you can skip if you want, the point is to keep the marketing in mind, but this game is actually an Apollo focused finale but they never showed it as such until you play it

The fact that machi didnt fire that gun is obvious and indisputable, and Apollo's incompetence is the only reason that case didnt end with a medical examination and a not guilty verdict in 5 minutes flat

          Anonymous

I thought that Machi constantly grabbing at his arm was used as an indication of potential injury, which is moronic but I was sure that Apollo's reaction when being explained the recoil thing was meant to reference that.

          Anonymous

Even though i hate this case, they explain right at the end of the first investigation day than Machi was "guilty" because they wanted to deal quickly with the case for political reasons.
But while case 1 is fantastic and case 2 just lacks a good villain, case 3 and 4 really are boring to play.

      Anonymous

It's frustrating because everyone acts like an idiot. The entire reason that Machi is suspected is because he's small enough to enter a vent and that's the prosecution's case. Why Apollo (or the judge) doesn't bring up how could this weedy 12 year old kid shoot a man with a revolver and then carry his body to the stage with no-one noticing is beyond me.

There's a fair bit of suspension of disbelief when it comes to Ace Attorney of course, but this is just stupid.

The next game will be Phoenix and Maya's children defending clients in pre-school accused of stealing crayons and pushing other kids
We are officially at the point in the series where a baby spin-off is due

What would you want the next game to be? Ace Attorney 7 or Great Ace Attorney 3?

Personally, I think Phoenix's story is over and there's not much else they can drag out from it, while you could definitely get more cases out of Naruhodo.

retcon 5&6 out of existence and the original creator makes a real sequel to 4

I like Turnabout Corner, it paired with the Investigation 2007 music hits a very good sweet spot.

    >it's okay that Phoenix suddenly gets an ex-girlfriend plot that conveniently ties to his real relationship with Mia

    >It's not okay that Apollo gets a backstory about a past he tried to forget because too much bullshit was happening in his life

You can have both you know, we enjoyed AAi2 despite how asspully it was to keep adding on asterisks on the conditions of DL6 and what really started it

      there's a massive difference between
      >my ex girlfriend is a murderer who was convicted by my boss
      and

We need more old people as defendants, Tenma and Dhurke were great, haven't played TGAA yet, it's going to be next though, I wonder if it has old defendents too.

So the game's rating is T overall right? Despite DD's original 3DS rating being M?
Did they just decide that DD's abundance of children around blood imagery wasn't a good reason to have it rated M anymore?
I doubt they would change anything, all the imagery was for a reason.

They commissioned entirely new translations for DD and SoJ for French and German (previously English-only) and already developed HD versions of Ace Attorney Investigations 1 AND 2. The existence of fan translations didn't deter them from GAA either.

I remember playing AJ back in the day and, even as a kid, noticing the obvious downgrade compared to the rest of the series. Are DD and SoJ as bad as AJ?

People seem not to like DD but I think it's fine and it's certainly nowhere near as bad as 4
6 is one of the most popular in the series

4 is better than DD what the frick are you smoking, the only enjoyable case in DD was the DLC case

SoJ is good though, it's a nice return to the form of the original trilogy. Secondaries only like SoJ for the clussy case and ignore the actual good parts of the game

people just s*y over it because muh Apollo gets to not be a third wheel and is instead a second wheel
it is fricking horrendously bad, case 2 in particular is homosexual secondary meme case that only stupid secondaries like
