Ace Combat

About to start playing this series, what am I in for? Should I be playing them in numbered order or are there ones that I should skip?

Never skip games, do the patched Japanese version of 3.

You should play 4-7 first. Then jump into the PS1 games. Air Combat and Ace Combat 2 are more like arcade games that aren't relevant to the story later in the series. Ace Combat 3 was butchered in the western release and needs a content restoration to get like 50% of the stuff cut from the Japanese release.

Or you could just play the japanese Ace Combat 3 with the english translation patch that has been out for over a decade already.

    as always, 4, 5, 0.

If you have a 360/Series X/S (I think AC6 is backwards compat, not sure) then try AC6. Not required but still a nice game

Then finish with 7 and suffer with the rest of us as we wait for AC8.

Do not touch Assault Horizon, it's dogshit Alternatively, if you NEED more Ace Combat after 7, try Project Wingman -- an excellent spiritual successor.

When they translated Ace Combat 3 they removed all the anime cutscenes and butchered the plot so badly someone made a fantranslation for the original version so get that fantranslation when doing 3

Pick anything you want. All the mainline games are good. Watch out for that one autist who ruins AC thread on Ganker

Play all the numbered entries, just be aware that 1-3 are a bit turbulent (sorry) in style and tone. Oh yeah and play Japanese 3.
If you've never played any jet games before I'd also recommend trying to get a handle on the non-simplified controls as soon as you can, it's going to be weird to adjust but it becomes second nature. Only slight issue is I don't think it's until 4/5 they start giving you better tutorials for practicing the standard controls, but I might be misremembering.

Up to you where you want to start. You can do 1, 2, 3 (fan translation) and continue to the PS2 games, or just start from the PS2 games.

Hard to know, but he strikes me as the kind of person who would betray Osea without realising just how much of a fuck up that would be right up until Erusean glowies killed him instead

He was going to reveal the reactivation of Stonehenge to shoot down the Arsenal Birds which means the Eurusians wouldn't have committed one to its recapture which means you'd have to fight both in Mission 19.

Which thinking about it would have been pretty hype.

Start with 4/5/0 because 3 (JP) completely mogs them all and it's not good to start with the best in the series. 1 and 2 don't have the story elements that make the rest compelling so they're not as fun to play.

    >Still no WW2 Ace Combat
They somewhat nailed the gameplay right for prop plane combat in AC Infinity, why don't the team just make a standalone game with that?

      Can't lock-on.
      Can't Ace Combat.

They barely get resources for the mainline games. WW2 era would be too risky investment

probably because high technology allows them to make strangereal more fantastical than trying to do WW2 era dog fighting. but i still think they could do kino moments like an outdated plane managing to cripple a state of the art beast through the sheer willpower and skill of an ace pilot. especially since being an ace meant a hell of a lot more during that era

Maybe an alternate universe kinda high-tech steampunk propeller WW2 with rockets but you can do lock-on but has shitty tracking. NotGermany has an alien superweapon or something like that.

Start with the first, it's simple but short. Get a feel for expert controls, enjoy the huge jump of going from 1 to 2, listen to the excellent music (head first rules) and have a good time. Ignore anyone telling you to start with gamea that came out half way into the franchise.

you're not missing much by just starting on 3 but 1 and 2 *are* fun

in fact if all you care about is "muh continuity" then you can just start with 4
