Almost every achievement that gets put in games nowadays is there to provide analytics data for sponsors and companies (stuff like "You opened the main menu!" or "You completed the tutorial!" achievements with the only function of collecting data on how many buyers actually played the game).

        Anonymous

It depends on the context. You're sort of right-ish for like, Steam Achievements because they're something that the platform owner "encourages" the developers to create as a way of keeping people stuck with the game and on the platform itself, because having that aspect of "collecting" them is enough to keep a subset of people permanently engaged. There's a surprisingly large audience of people who literally just purchase games in order to acquire the achievement points/rank from them. But as far as data collection goes, it's kind of irrelevant because they don't give a shit how many people got past Level 1 or whatever, as long as they're getting the money for the game.

It's similar for games like World of Warcraft where stuffing the game with achievements keeps people playing (and thus paying) by giving them an e-peen metric to grind and collect and compare.

Lots of singleplayer games have in-game, non-external challenges and achievements that don't really function the same way, like I'm pretty sure Fallout has a whole list of hidden achievements you can get, none of which are displayed externally and don't exist to drive game sales or playtime.

the "complete whatever level" achievements are used to see how far players get into the game

I don't know why you think devs need publicly visible achievements to gather metrics. That's not a thing. They silently gather way more data than what's used for achievements.

Not him but I guess it's more interesting for us than anything, since you can see how 70%+ of players will pay $60 for a game and then play it for 10 minutes, which is weird as frick

Because sometimes the dev's idea of fun is stringing the player along for years on end just to spite him. Seriously. You would have come across ONE achievement that spelled out not fun to do. There's no way you're not going to do it are you?

You're not wrong. Would just like to add that early on, achievements were more like, hints towards trying out stuff you might have otherwise missed or ignored. Early TF2 cheevos were mostly about playing a certain class a certain way, which was kind of ok. Then marketing departments got a hold of it and turned cheevos into dumb checklists.

TF2's approach was hardly ideal. Especially since they initially tried to make it so unlocks were obtained by doing achievements. Which caused people to play moronicly in order to get the unlocks.

If you're getting enjoyment out of it then what's the problem? If you're actively playing experiences you hate to get than *ding* of gratification when the achievement pops up then you just need to stop playing games. You've already ruined your ability to enjoy them on their own terms. The best you can do is play on Switch where there's no unified achievement system in place, but you're probably too broken now to actually enjoy games without a breadcrumb trail to the next dopamine hit.

This comic actually misses the point of achievements and how devs use them. If the achievement for beating the game without achievements is really popular, that tells them something about their game design. Maybe the game could be more fun without upgrades getting in the way.

This is definitely true. I have a friend who is obsessed with getting achievements, and definitely not for the enjoyment of it, because if the achievement actually presents any challenge then he will look up a guide on how to do it as easily as possible, or better yet, how to cheese it in unintended ways to remove all challenge.
