I loved it. It marks the actual pinnacle of Square's Active Time Battle system and also marks the pinnacle of JRPG Job systems in general.
Story-wise it does some interesting things that it never would have been allowed to do if it wasn't a "direct-to-DVD Final Fantasy" which may not be everyone's cup of tea, but I thought it was great.
The cringy girl power angle is the only thing that might turn people off, but I also feel that this was unfairly shit on during its own time and isn't actually as bad as people would have you believe.
    tl;dr yes, I liked it.

How about the fact that 90% of maps and enemeis were just reused from FFX? 13-2 and 13-3 didn't copy 90% of content from 13, that's cheap, moronic and gay. There was so much they could've explored in Spira, it's a cool world. Just didn't bother, making new locations is hard, just toss the old ones back in, the plebs will gobble it up

        Anonymous

This was arguably the best thing x-2 did. There's nothing wrong with those maps, and the game came out quickly as a result. Modern games should reuse assets too

        1) It was their first time doing a sequel like this

You have to be gay and moronic when it comes to storytelling and writing to like this.

This guy is the gayest of the gayest. Some kind of giga gay.

Yeah, it was good. Only big negative is the unbelieeeeevable bullshit you have to do to get 100%, there is no chance anyone managed it without a strategy guide.

Also, the PC port for FFX and FFX-2 was fricking dogshit and crashes/freezes every 5 minutes, even ignoring the absolute shambles of the '''''''remastered'''''' graphics.

      >unbelieeeeeeevable
This "guy" definitely gay too. If you like games that have been purposefully dumbified to attract female audiences, you're dumb as hell.

The only thing I really dislike about the game is how easy it is to miss the true ending without a guide

      Anonymous

I did but, on trying to replay it for the new classes added in a later version I couldn't really,

Because this guy is wrong and the combat is bad thanks to everyone having to stand around doing nothing constantly if you use moves which need to fill a bar before they act, making a great deal of your attacks actively not worth using.

        Anonymous

Why is that bad? More powerful attacks have a charge time while less powerful attacks are instant. Why is that bad?

          Anonymous

That's not how it works at all. Attacks with charge time are in no way actually stronger than those without universally. Even on just the first classes you start with your charge moves are utility tools like stealing (which everyone just sort of awkwardly stands around waiting for you to do) or stat nerfing moves that do no higher damage at all.
You have to use skills to gain ap unless you equip the mug garment grid and once you do equip that garment grid you can very easily beat basically everything just spamming attack in a fraction of the time as if you used skills, especially once you get higher tier gear (and you can get + 60 or so to all stats equipment the instant you gain lady luck, which also always crits on basic attacks (making its basic stronger than most skills) and attack for full damage from back row)
The game is very poorly balanced

            Anonymous

It's fun anyway. Last time I played I spent most of my time in the Arena just playing around with each class.

            That's not a thing in ffx-2

You're right about the system sucking. It's almost good and has good ideas, just needs better execution. Being able to stunlock bosses to death by spacing out regular attacks from 3x thief is silly.

I did by accident. Reading up later -and this is like 20 years ago almost- i think if you press O to jason too much in the farplane the game bugs and gives you like 100.3% or something.

          Anonymous

The only way you can 100% on a first playthrough is to join the Youth League and get all the cutscenes, etc. Joining New Yevon consigns you to 99% max and you can only get the extra few percentage points via a NG+ game (where you join the Youth League) since the total is cumulative.

          Anonymous

          >I mean could you even 100% it one playthrough?
Yes, but it's extremely precise. Missing even one tiny innocuous, unrelated line of dialogue from a random npc will cost you 0.1%
There were even some scenes that could bug and lock you out of it if you weren't aware. You have to save right before they happen just in case they do.

On my current game I followed a guide and still ended up 2% behind the curve by the end of chapter 3. I said I'd play my way and then try again the next loop.

It's so fricking good, its combat is the best ATB in the series, it's fun to explore the world again, the vibe is happy, the outfits are fun, the characters have charisma, there's so much to do, and it's ridiculously sexy for a mainstream PS2 game.
Also Rikku owes me breeding sex

How do I get a Rikku wife?

I really need to gush about how fricking good ATB is in this game because I think it's unmatched so far in the FF series.

Menuing is not just mindlessly pressing X because characters need to charge and then move to perform their actions. Chaining not only increases your damage but it stops the enemy from hurting you. This means timing moves correctly enables you to get a big hit in at the end or save a character who would otherwise die if they don't get healed. Trigger Happy can keep you alive in some cases. Some enemies are armored and can blow through but then some moves can actually break armor

Also just the fact that jobs are good at some things but not everything meaning there's actual incentive to change roles or use garment grids that give bonus effects regardless of job equipped like full cure.

How has Final Fantasy not iterated on this system in 15 fricking years?

        Anonymous

They were thinking you'd play New Game+ and try the different branches. Getting 100% in one run feels like it wasn't even intended with how ludicrously specific you need to be, but with multiple playthroughs there's something like 130% possible (even though it doesn't track past 100).

By the end I was really sick of Spira after going back and forth to Zanarkand and Besaid and all that other shit over and over. And Paine didn't get enough to do to feel like a natural member of the group. But the battle system was fun, and I actually liked the direction they took the story. They didn't just make it about some boring butthole trying to revive Sin like Advent Children and they didn't just completely rehash the previous game like FFIV The After Years. It was nice to see how the world's improved even if it still had problems to mop up.

but the worst part is the gameplay, more grinding, terrible minigames and a ton of them. I didn't enjoy any of it, job system ok but I always preferred to have distinct specialization for each character, just a preference and it's not a issue, SE did the right thing to have a job system with a party with only 3 characters.

I would too but seeing the original X writer do his own take on "how does spira look 20 years after the fall of Yevon and Sin?" is a close second i'll take.

Source on that? Because if true I'll have new found respect for Nojima.

Can't find the exact interview but heres Nomura talking about X-3
            >https://www.gameinformer.com/2021/07/14/a-final-fantasy-x-3-story-is-already-written-but-final-fantasy-7-remake-is-the-main
from what they both said across a couple of interviews during lockdown the canon should be
            >FFX>FFX-2 but the Tidus coming back secret end isn't canon>elements of the 30min audio novel>FFX-3

              Anonymous

Thanks for that. Personally I'd rather they leave X alone. We might end up with a FF7 situation where shit is not allowed to actually conclude because the hamster wheel has to keep spinning.

You know 20+ years later they can change things or just go "i didn't like how i did that" and just have X-3 tweak things right?

                Anonymous

No because you've shown yourself to be moron who has no idea what he's talking about.

Toriyama directed both X and X-2 and Nojima wrote the story for both and the X-3 audio drama/novel. There is no bullshit schism between both people. They worked together on both games.

              Anonymous

Also all three stories X, X-2 and X-3, were written by Nojima. What is this bullshit about Toriyama being responsible for X and X-3 and not X-2? He's the director of both games not the writer.

X-2 was an experiment to see how well a direct sequel to a mainline FF game would go over with the fans before they went ahead with their real plan of a FF7 expanded universe. FFX was popular enough to gain attention, but wasn't their sacred FF7 cow that they didn't want to risk alienating the fans with. They didn't want to spend a lot of money on a gamble, and just through a lot of stuff they figured would be catchy to japanese players (cute girls doing magical girl henshins, j-pop music, etc) in and reused the assets to cut costs.

X-2 is very Charlie's Angels in tone. It's kind of funny because the first two chapters are all about how this serious civil war is brewing in the background between the current world order trying to hold on to its current power and the younger people wanting to burn it all down to the ground. And both parties are trying to use Yuna as a figurehead to justify their every action. And Yuna just doesn't want to be involved in this shit. She just got done being in a struggle with world spanning consequences, she just wants to enjoy her life and make reunite with her boyfriend. Until Chapter 4 where she gives up and realizes she doesn't really have a choice anymore.

A pretty clunky rouge-like. You gotta climb 100 floor tower and if you die, you gotta start back from the first floor with all your items gone with some of the most unforgiving RNG bullshit if you aren't prepared(I guess that's the point of the genre). If you like Pokemon/Chocobo Mystery dungeon games...its worst than that. Like I said, it just feels clunky.

The story is basically Breaking the Band that tries to set up an possible sequel but just turns into Breaking the Band in the end. I managed to finish it and just felt unrewarding after all that hard work since nothing carries to the main game and unlock basically nothing.

Nah, I don't think anything could reach those shitty dramas. If you want want a clifnote version

          >a year or so had pass after the events of X-2
          >a large ancient mystery tower was discovered in Spira
          >tower seems to be older than Zanarkand based on the runes
          >Y.R.P goes to explore it
          >after every boss fight(lets just say every time 10 floors as I can't remember) is a cutscene between Y.R.P
          >Y.R.P gets into several heated arguments
          >these arguments take up 90% of the story of last mission and barely ever touching the lore of the mystery tower
          >finally get to the last boss
          >boss is some kind of uniquely new monster called Major Numerus possibly from whatever ancient civilization the tower is from as all other monsters and bosses had been previous FFX and X-2 monsters(you can actually fight it in the creator creator in the main game in X-2 but if you've never played last mission most probably wouldn't know where it was from)
          >Y.R.P beats it(or more like they brush it aside) and make it to the top and continue their argument which ends up with them wanting to split up and doing their own thing
Probably not much of a sequel tease but more Spira background lore. The tower was the only thing I was interested in because we're talking something older than Zanarkand existing but NOPE, we got shitty girl drama.

      >Spira transformed into a much more fun and colorful place because people don't have to fear Sin and annihilation anymore

Spira is more colorful but also tense in a different way. The first few years were a party but it's not like the last 1000 years just vanished. Yevon got caught in a hell of a lot of lies. Lies that they knowingly maintained for centuries. The fact that the Al Bhed didn't go nuclear is a miracle. But it's also true that Yevon is all most of these people know. Their fathers and their fathers fathers all follow it and it would be hard to abandon overnight. So yeah there would be a split and I think it puts Yuna in an interesting position. Because on the one hand, Yuna is the embodiment of everything Yevon promised. She was a Yevon priestess who went on pilgrimage and destroyed Sin. But at the same time, Yuna was the one who exposed Yevon to be liars. So both major factions want her on their team.

The problem is that FFX has a good story and great characters, but it's not a fun game.
There is blitzball and some extras in Calm Lands, but it is very little. And the Sphere Grid system is quite shallow.

I played it in 2003, shortly after FFX-2 came out and I played the Japanese version first (the American version came out at the end of the year). When I finished FFX it gave that feeling that something was missing, the game seemed incomplete, and FFX-2 came as an extra with the fun that was missing in X.

I always saw FFX-2 as a complement to what FFX lacked, which is why I always liked it.
