Finished it on hard as a kid and the game is borderline unplayable. No reason to play it anymore now that there are more games available.

If skill issue is part of the problem - it's likely a bad game. Not because high skill play is bad, but because if a game is shit before you get to high skill, it's still probably shit.

That being said, Mario Kart series is always kinda trash. But most racing games are so... eh. That's just how that shit rolls.

This game is not fun and I totally failed to see the appeal or why it became a franchise.

    >slide all over the fricking place, you can't control your kart for shit
    >just about impossible to not go off into the grass
    >your hand quickly cramps up from all the frantic swerving

I wish there was a racing wheel or something but nobody ever bothered to make one for the SNES.

if you compare it most racing games of the time it was revelatory. excluding elevation it was a fully realized "3d" driving game. a lot of the other stuff played akin to outrun where turning was a much more primitive on rails illusion.

It was mind blowing when it dropped. MK64 was superior in every way and the peak of the series. SMK is fun a few times to experience the history but like all SNES racers it just wasn't a genre that worked with the then contemporary hardware.

SMK also needed a helper chip in the cartridge to do 3D effects.

I always see people shit on smk, and they certainly have a point, but I can't help but find the post sm64 karts kind of boring in comparison. It is so easy to turn into the massive straight aways that the only thing you can really frick up is using your drift boost inefficiently, the satisfaction of getting a clean turn in smk isn't there.

It is unironigally better than MK64 and I'm not even kidding. How the frick did Nintendo make physics work so well in a SNES game but frick it all up in a N64 game.

SMK was probably coded in hand-written assembly language like most SNES games while MK64 was done in C (maybe with some inline asm for graphics routines and whatnot) and who knows how good the compiler they used was?

3D was really new in 1996 and programmers were still getting a hang on it.

SMK was 65c816 assembly and MK64 was C but I don't see how that makes any difference, it's not like the programming language used has a major impact on physics

SM64 was great and if they already knew how to make Mario Kart work in mode7+hdma on a fricking SNES, why would they have so much trouble with a legit 3D system they developed

It's simple, just compare the size of the tracks
In SMK they're small like a real go kart track so you get a good sense of speed on 150cc
In MK64 they're massive but the karts aren't really any faster to make up for it

It's alright, but the rubberbanding is bullshit.

This and the fact the CPUs cheat by having an infinite supply of unique items. Like how Mario AI can use a starman whenever the frick he wants, Yoshi can fire eggs, Bowser shoots fireballs, etc.

        Anonymous

try playing any console baseball game where you throw a pitch and the AI always knows exactly where the ball is going to land so their catcher is there to grab it

this is fine(and iirc was basically unavoidable due to cpu limitations preventing item tracking for 8 characters) each ai enemy has a hazard you can reasonably avoid. better than them launching lightning and blue shells constantly.

You need some heavy rubberbanding for the drama of vying for the championship, each character having their 2 rivals I think was a reasonable approach for the kind of game smk is.

I'll admit it's the worst mario kart, and it plays incredibly different, but I feel like it's still a valid solid game and the fact that it's so different makes it stand out.
