No matter what you think of the game, or if it eventually turns out to be good or bad, it's not vaporware. The reason for the delay is the beta, which is feature complete and can be played from beginning to end, showed there were more bugs to be fixed and some extra polish is needed in some places. It's not like this latest delay is that long.

I am on my third playthrough, 42.3 hours according to steam.

I am in love with this game its so amazing, I hope they do a ReShock 2, id throw a thousand at that kickstarter

I do dislike however that the SICK flute parts from the original game soundtrack are nowhere in this game, the music in the outro after the end had a drumbeat that was similar to the one in the original games main theme so i was expecting the cool flute to enter, but doesn't. I like the games soundtrack though, the original reactor theme is very audible in that level and it was fun realizing that the theme to the engineering level in SS2 was in this game too. Executive was good too but i wish the other levels retained their original themes more.

I would like if animations like keycard scanning wouldn't take away my control of the game and pull me towards the door, or if they have to do this then make the animation faster. You can move while using the recharging stations, but it slows you down a ton for the first second and restricts your, but at least I could skate backwards to get back to what i was doing a little faster.

The remake is more oriented around having a spooky atmosphere. There is a lot of darkness that makes enemies difficult to tell apart from the environment at times. The original was very dark at times too, but even then the enemies had a good contrast to the environment (except cyborg assassins, which would be hard to see but it seemed like part of their design, they were usually in spots where you wouldn't see them like above and behind you)

A remix of the OG soundtrack as an option in the remake was a backer goal that was met, but I saw a tweet from someone at nightdive (stephen i think) saying that they'll do it if theres demand, so either they forgot that it was a met backer goal, or they are planning to do it anyways and said that to look good when they do add it, "Hey, look at how awesome we are, our fans wanted something and we delivered ;)"

System Shock is only getting a remake because Nightdive owns the IP and they want to revive it. If the remake and SS2EE prove popular they'll likely try and wrangle SS3 away from Tencent and do it themselves.

Why did the extremely low poly models work for Thief 1 but not for SS2? Is it the extremely low light in Thief?

        Anonymous

        >Why did the extremely low poly models work for Thief 1 but not for SS2?
My answer: because in Thief the type of enemy was more recognizable at a glance. Guard, zombie, even burricks and mantismen the player quickly "gets" what they're supposed to be and close inspection is not needed. SS2 has weirdo scifi creatures that are harder to grok and don't hold up under closer inspection.

Better to delay than release early access tier product as "full game" like most AAA studios do these days.
Not that we know for sure before the release but we can only hope that they have actually good intentions behind these delays, while it is not impossible either that they have made major frickup or just planning to get more preorder sales before running with the money.

Honestly the original is great fun and playable even today. I can see sort of why they'd want to remake it, and I guess just doing the same thing all over would suck, but damn it I want more games like System Shock 1. I want non mouselook based control systems, interactive UI elements, interacting with the environment with your cursor instead of a fixed crosshair, it was a great game and I'm mad there's not more stuff made like it.

What I want are more sci-fi dungeon crawlers with that kind of Ultima underworld control system. Not FPS mouselook style of gameplay, the remake is largely a conventional shooter in terms of input.

In another universe I said that the game aged poorly, to which you replied that you can just enable mouselook and disable to UI and it's nearly Deus Ex.

Face it, there's a reason people still actually play System Shock 2 and the first game stays on the shelf next to Earthbound. Also go play Arx.

Nightdive should have stayed in their fricking lane instead of doing this. Imagine what we could have had right now instead of waiting forever for something mediocre that won't even sell.

The voice-acting was good though. I will give them that.

Literally take the SS1 source code, tack in a new renderer that supports shadows volumes for le ebic screenshots, redo the voice acting with Teri Brosius and maybe add ragdolls because gamers love that. I don't care if it looks like shit and long as it captures the soul of the original.

kickstarters are more reliable in the board gaming scene. The downsides in that scenario is a marked up price for upgraded components and/or art books and such and waiting a long time

        Anonymous

And that was one of the big problems, wasn't it? OG Prey had some crazy cool monster design, but here it's just shadowy formless aliens all the way through. That concept alone could make something really scary and interesting, but they go for the most basic b***h designs possible. Absolute waste if you ask me.

Prey leaned into minimalist design like a lot of sci fi. With the current trend it is not unreasonable to assume that this design philosophy will be the dominant modus operandi in the future. However, while this may be a good prediction for future aesthetics, it doesn't change the fact that it makes for an unpleasing and sterile look in a game

Reminder: after working fine for everyone, the first demo for this was broken on anything other than Windows 10 because a surprise update updated the DX11 renderer to 11.3, which wasn't backported to 7, this wasn't mentioned anywhere in the patch notes or supported OS sections, and Nightdive ignored it since enough people forgot and the Reshade-based fix was spread enough. MS emphasized that this surface-based update isn't going to work with 7 when pushing it out, but on Discord, Nightdive insisted this was a totally unforeseen and random problem

They eventually silently-fixed it last year without acknowledging it was ever a problem STEMMING IN 2020 to begin with
