The memetic dialogue is the only notable thing about it. Beyond that it is your typical cookie cutter modern arpg with the same roll/parry combat and lootshit as the rest.

      >modern fromslopware
Both nuTN and From have basically been making the same game for a decade now. Although in TN's case it's worse as the Nioh games, this shit, Wo Long, and Rise of the Ronin have less time between their releases and less differences than DaS3, Sekiro, AC6 and Elden shit do.

    I found it pretty fun.
Combat is fluid and each weapon has plenty of combat skills(including some hidden ones you unlock outside of the skill tree). It's nice having multiple defensive options too(you've got a good old guard, dodge and a parry that works on everything except grabs which have a distinct glow so no guessing there + you can hold it which makes it drain a regenerating resource so early on while getting the hang of things you don't have to perfectly time it). First time around you can ignore gear and focus on the action combat itself and get used to things. Finishers struck a perfect balance when it comes to being cool to look at and not wasting your time, they're pretty fast and sometimes speed up even more. In 100 something hours I didn't get tired of them somehow(plus when you finish off an enemy all the other stunned enemies also get finished off so it's great not having to run around finishing everyone off one by one).

Once you finish the main game and unlock new game+ and DLC shenanigans, gear autism gets added into the mix where you can mix and match various set effects to get weird and cool shit going on like near infinite mana to spam giga homie nukes or becoming semi immortal and what not. There are a lot of effects and a lot to frick around with on that front.

Enjoyed the story and the characters too, some nice party banter while you traverse the stages and the boss cutscenes where Jack tells them to eat shit are already quite known. It's cheesy at times but when shit gets real it actually stays that way as opposed to some games where writers can't have a serious moment without something funny going on at the same time.

Fashion wise there's a bunch of armor and you have costume slots to maintain a certain look for your homies regardless of what they're wearing.

Some nice soundtrack and the last last last battle is pure kino because you fight Jack.

Oh also if you've enjoyed Dissidia you will get a surprise cameo of Emperor and a great boss fight and he actually fights like in Dissidia by planting mines and shit.

One thing that might be a turn off is that DLC really spikes up in difficulty and you will need super gear. The window between each DLC was like 3 months so at the time it wasn't so bad just chilling and grinding shit but if you just want to see the conclusion and not mess around too much with numbers then you technically could just use a certain new mode that gets unlocked which gives you infinite mana which can make you straight up invincible with a set effect. You can also take the middle road there and use this mode to go to the highest level mission, grab some gear with this trick then turn it off and continue playing legit.

If you really enjoy running around and blowing shit up there are plenty of modes for that in the DLCs like the Labyrinth(where you can also collect and raise monsters for some buffs and dialogue if that's your thing).

Walls of text mean nothing. I've seen such walls being written for extremely shallow games like the Senran Kagura games, Valkyrie Drive, the Oneechanbara games or even the average From software rollslop.

It's the stepping stone from nioh 2 to wo long. A large focus on parrying and counters and just guards, but not full on sekiro-style deflect spam like wo long is.

I enjoyed it, but it's a grind to get what you want, and the DLC are BALS TO THE WALS hard, you NEED to get top gear before you can move on to the next.
Couple that with precisely 0 people playing multiplayer and you'll basically just be grinding shit alone for a good while to progress after main story.

It's decent, I expected worse. Me and my friends played it in co-op and we got bored after a while (looking at the list of levels, we were more or less halfway through the game): the levels are corridors with combat encounters, the story is – by design – stupid, the Diablo-like loot is annoying to deal with, and the bossfights were way too easy even on Hard (but I assume the game's more challenging if you play alone).
So it's not a BAD videogame, it's not all memes, but there was nothing keeping us hooked so we ended up uninstalling it after a few days. The game peaks at the very first fight against Chaos to be honest.

It was a 7/10 for me, maybe a 6/10 even. Maybe it's one of those games that 'gets good' 20 hours in or whatever; I have no idea if that's the case because we ended up quitting before getting there.

      Anonymous

I'd say your review isn't entirely unfair since you at least played some of it and nothing you said really said in the first part really was a lie, the level design isn't anything special, but
      >The game peaks at the very first fight against Chaos to be honest.
is just not true, the last few bosses are really cool and a lot of people actually got into the story around that point as well, and then there's the DLC where the bosses and combat in general get a lot harder with gear autism becoming more important (debateable if this is a positive)

        Anonymous

Of course I was talking about my experience. For ME, that was the best part of the game. I even said:
        >Maybe it's one of those games that 'gets good' 20 hours in or whatever; I have no idea if that's the case because we ended up quitting before getting there.

As I said, I looked at the list of levels (here https://game8.co/games/Stranger-of-Paradise-Final-Fantasy-Origin/archives/370677) and I remember Cray Claw but not Kraken, so "halfway through Chapter 13" is probably when we stopped playing.
And it's not like we rage-uninstalled it in disgust. We just stopped playing one day, and the very next day we asked: "Hey, who wants to play Stranger of Paradise" and the answers were "Eeeh... I'd rather play X instead." And we never booted the game ever again.

I really, really need to get back to playing it. What I remembered was the game made me feel less good about FF16 as soon as I started it. The combat was harder but it felt more rewarding to succeed. I got a game over on XVI nine times in my playthrough, whereas in this game, I lost to Chaos TWENTY times before succeeding. Just something about the range of his attacks and the timing kept throwing me off, I felt like I couldn't shake the motherfricker. But the finishers were cool and the risk/reward with the soul gauge or whatever was great, you can't just hold the button forever to block or parry. I like switching between jobs by button toggling with the different weapons, more combinations to remember, too.

    Yes, great game.
Higher dificulties get pretty silly, but builds also get downright silly (-Charge Time, +Damage, Charge level 3 Zantetsuken can melt a lot of stupid bosses really quick).
But I like playing as a Paladin/Royal Guard with parry heals/buffs on proc. It's really not optimal, but I like parry attacks and trading blows with WoL and Omega (1st phase).

Grinding the affinities in Rift made me appreciate the jobs I didn't give jackshit about before. Lancer/Blue Mage with something like WoL's instant ability is the cheesiest long-range shit, especially since it still staggers WoL even as a Job Ability. Gambler is still the go-to subclass for everything if you just want to see big funny numbers go up and maxed-out MP.

It’s pretty great. It seems much like Nioh at a glance, but the feel of combat is very different. You don't have a stamina mechanic limiting your offense or movement, nor any ki pulses to make you pause after attacking, so there's a greater sense of immediacy. While you can block or dodge normally, your preferred method of defense is the soul shield, because it both staggers foes and increases your MP. Attacking immediately after a soul shield makes Jack lunge forward quickly to gap-close. Fighting has the same sort of speed and aggression as Ninja Gaiden, albeit to a lesser degree.
MP is the one limiting factor on your aggression, and it's very important. The bulk of your power and utility comes from weapon and job abilities, all of which cost at least 1 MP from your maximum stock of 6. You have to be gaining MP constantly to keep up with the constant expenditure, and the only ways to do that are by hitting enemies with normal attacks, executing broken enemies, or using the soul shield, hence the soul shield's high value.
The use of environmental features in combat is great. Weeds on the ground can be burnt and puddles electrified, dealing damage over time to passersby, while water will put out such fires. You can knock pillars or stalactites onto enemies, or knock enemies off of ledges to damage or kill them. There's a particular emphasis on wallsplats, which deal a large amount of break damage to the victim in addition to a long knockdown. One job even gets a bonus to wallsplat damage. Controlling positioning is highly rewarding, as are any abilities which can knock your foes around.

On top of that, magic is fantastic as well, not just because you get to target weaknesses, but they have other uses like differing AOEs, long stun times, DoT, etc. Probably my favorite thing I’ve done is use a spell an enemy is resistant against to my advantage. One time, I was fighting a flying enemy who I was having trouble hitting with melee attacks, so I used Aeroga because the hitbox is tall. Even though the enemy was resistant, my spell ended up pushing it into a tree, causing a collision, and it fell over and I finished it off with my axe, which felt amazing.

Yes, one of the DLCs added marksman and hunter classes. Ranged combat in this game absolutely mogs Nioh's, probably because they had to build an entire job around it. I still prefer melee, but being able to do combos with guns and using moves to transition straight into aiming stance makes it feel A LOT more dynamic.

It's really good, the combat is solid, the build variety is satisfying, visuals and music are great too.
The reason it gets memed hard is because of the main character, who only has one goal in mind, and frequently interrupts cliché sidetracks with "how does this unnecessary shit help me" and le ebin villain speeches with "shut the frick up", it's great and extremely entertaining. If you had this kind of main character in any other jrpg, you would kill the boss 20 minutes after you started the game because he doesn't care about anything that doesn't have to do with kicking the big bad's shit in and wants to take the most direct path imaginable.
