Give it a few more years for the nostalgia to hit and the "ironically blocky" era to pass

PS1 textures were so bad in most cases that the style can easily be emulated by talentless hacks. PS2 on the other hand actually had a lot of hand painted lighting/details and photobashed textures which actually requires some level of competence to create that a lot of indies lack. It's probably the most skill intensive era of texture work along with PS3 because it has more detail than PS1 but isn't mostly procedural like today's PBR shit.

it doesn't matter they're just going to make games with PS2 polycount models and use prepackaged global illumination and ambient occlusion
and they'll put a VHS filter on it

I DO remember an indie dev, who does PS1 stuff, said one time that he just sources his textures from Google images or scans from magazines or books, and he just takes parts of the image and basically crushes it down to very small pixels using an image editor. He doesn't really make most of his textures by hand.

        >He doesn't really make most of his textures by hand.
uh, all game devs use photographs for their textures. nobody hand paints a cobblestone road.

??? are you not accounting for games with cartoon artstyles or something? Look at XIII for instance, it actually has (computer) drawn textures, there are actually games that do that. There are also games on the PS1 that do pixel art/cel-shaded textures like Megaman Legends.

PS2 level of 3d graphics require actual animation, modeling and texturing skills. It will just look like complete shit if you don't know what you're doing...
Indies can get by doing PS1 imitations because it's a lot blockier and simpler.

For me peak PS2 graphics is Yakuza 1 and 2. It's not that the look the "best" but it's my ideal PS2 aesthetic.

For me it's Zone of the Enders 2 and MGS3. I absolutely love the way the characters look in MGS3 and ZOE2 still looks amazingly stylized.
I also personally love the look of budget PS2 titles like RAD and King's Field 4. There's something just so charming about them.

PS1 graphics have a certain style to them, born of serious tech limitations. PS2 graphics are just current graphics, but a bit less detailed, a bit lower res, more baked in lighting, etc. Unlike with the PS1 and earlier the difference is incremental, so there isn't much to miss.
It took what, 15 years to go from
to pic rel, but they still have the same style and aesthetic.

It's pretty much gen7 style - metallic reflections and bump, og xbox version looks different

      Anonymous

Not really the same, but I've always held that if I could make a game with full artistic freedom it'd probably look a lot like Perfect Dark Zero. I don't know why but those reflective metals, bloomy lighting and plastic-like look have always fascinated me. I like that transition era in gaming too.
Also shoutout to the Perfect Dark Zero superfan qt on Reddit.

Idk something about the poly count of games like MGS2 and 3, combined with their texture resolution sings to my soul. PSP also does it pretty well.

The death of Renderware has been a net negative for videogames as a whole.

Didn't the source files for renderware get released a while back?

        Anonymous

A few versions were leaked, but I don't think source has ever officially been released. It is now owned by EA after all, so I very much doubt they ever would release it.
Someone has made an open source recreation, but not the editor/tools bit, so it's really only useful for decompilations (it's what re3/reVC/reLCS used).

Well that's disappointing, I hate that we have to rely on reverse engineering existing versions of game engines or use the newer ones like unity or unreal which really aren't great in my opinion.

We're kind of in the transitionary phase where people are moving on from the 90's to early 2000's nostalgia. Once it settles in we'll start getting indie devs making games that try to copy the 6th gen aesthetic.

  14. 11 months ago
    Onanymous

PS2 graphics thats... hard to define. at least with ps1 you have actual hardware limitations. late PS2 games look like PS3 games just blurrier

  15. 11 months ago
    Anonymous

A few years ago indies were only making 2D games and everyone was wondering where the lowpoly PS1-like games were. So I guess you just gotta wait for them to hit the PS2 era.

  16. 11 months ago

Making faux 6th gen models is way, waaay too hard for kids.

      Anonymous

How hard can it be? Compared to games of today the poly count on models from 6th gen can't be that high. Textures do seem like a pain in the ass though.

        Anonymous

You have to box model them which is a lot more technically demanding than sculpting.

          Anonymous

Lol, you can retopology sculpt to any polycount, ps2 like games has a budget ~3k triangles and one diffuse texture 1024x512 max with simple baked lighting.

Sculpting is more time-consuming than polygon extruding, but to do something good looking you should have an understanding by experience of human proportionsvolumes.

I see a lot of indie games saying they look like ps1 games but they all look like shit on purpose. Mostly low effort horror games. The authentic ps1 look is still rare because that still takes a lot of skill.

  20. 11 months ago

that's because a ps2 games takes too much skill to make, and that's something no indie dev possesses. they are all unskilled no talent hacks riding off the fact that 100% of twitter Black folk love le ebin ps1 style.

Here's one for you: when you you think the nostalgia will run out? To clarify; what graphical asthetic could there be nostalgia for when enough horse power exists to render whatever you want? Or would nostalgia simply refocus on individual games rather than graphical epochs?

      Anonymous

      >rather than graphical epochs
After ps2 there are none. ps3 doesn't look MUCH worse then current gen. It has the same graphics as modern games if you just turn down the settings to low. So PS2 will be the last one and then yeah, it'll just go into particular games instead if not the consoles themselves. For example making a motion control game that would play like a wii game or making a ds two screen type of game. Graphics have stopped evolving when the ps3 gen came

When cloud gaming turns up for real. Nostalgia will become ALL consoles

  31. 11 months ago

We're about 5 years too early for that yet.
We've had the really old 8-bit retro games and still getting 2D platformers, now we're going into the late 90s boomer shooters and PS1 survival horrors.
If I were to hazard a guess I think we're going to start seeing more "urban" games again, with indie developers making use of procedural generation to create open world cities, crank the detail way down for the "PS2" vibe to help with optimisation, and use cheap mocap and AI voice acting where the rough quality will only add to the charm because it was so poor back then.
TL;DR: Prepare for more GTA knock-offs.

most of muh PS1 aesthetics games are much closer to PS2 graphics in texture sharpness, polygon count and sfx complexity. not to say that to my knowledge no game tries to emulate the infamous vertex bug (geometry wobble) which is the most distinct thing about PS1 graphics there is.

  36. 11 months ago

affine texture mapping and low res unfiltered textures were visually distinctive
6th gen onwards is visually homogeneous
because handhelds are visually behind consoles by several years consistently, merely using lower fidelity models and textures is not a reliable way to milk nostalgia

  37. 11 months ago

it's too much work for 1 person, ps2 era is when game studios started to regularly get up to 50-100 people working on a game. you could never do FFX with 1-3 people. indies can't really even match the output of the bigger budget 16/32 bit titles yet
