Alright, I finally finished Kingdom Hearts 1.

Alright, I finally finished Kingdom Hearts 1. Sora is cute and best boy, Kairi is also adorable and I need to save her now.
What order are the rest of the games and movies supposed to be done in? Chronological, release order or some weird fan recommended one? These names are confusing.

Chain of memories, 2. Then stop

Then I'd feel like I never completed the story and that would annoy me, I'd rather see all the supposed bad for myself than just assume it's bad based on stranger's opinions.

2 ends on a perfectly definitive note. Honestly i appreciate the outlook but 2 is the peak of the franchise and the story goes waaaaaaaaay downhill after.
Here's the release date order, basically just down the screen/left to right but instead of 358, play 2 before it since 358 spoils key twists of 2

Even if you play all the games you'll still feel that way.

    Release order

Release order will be best. Sequels and prequels are made with the expectation you'd played earlier games, and so will be either incomprehensible/full of spoilers depending on what you have and haven't played.

    >Chain of Memories comes directly after 1. You should play the GBA version as the 3D remake sucks to control. Otherwise just watch the cutscenes on youtube.
    >2 comes right after Chain of Memories, and while you could go straight from 1 to 2 a lot of stuff only makes sense with CoM in mind.
    >The final mix versions of 1 and 2 have some bonus cutscenes, mostly to make it flow better with later plot beats.
    >358 Days/2, Re:Coded, and Birth By Sleep occur at various points chronologically, but should be played after 2. They can be played in basically any order relative to each other.
    >There's been like six mobile games. Watch youtube summaries or just expect to be confused whenever time travel or Xehanort is mentioned.
    >Dream Drop Distance takes place right before 3. It sucks. Gameplay is mediocre, you have to play pokemon Amie to level up, it fricks up the lore, it fricks up the lore again, it retcons some shit, it's an absolute travesty. Neku is there though, he's cool.
    >0.2 a fragmentary passage exists to explain why Mickey isn't wearing a shirt at the end of KH1, and also to make the numbers add up to 13
    >3 occurs. The DLC is alright if you like superbosses.
    >Melody of Memory takes place after 3 and has like 15 minutes of lore, watch it on youtube unless you're okay with a 7/10 rhythm game.

Thanks, friend. The mobile game stuff is the only one I'm not looking forward to, honestly.

Maybe, but I'm not the type of person who can't compartmentalize stories and I also want to play them for reasons other than story as well. If I do end up hating the games after 2 I can just fondly remember the early titles as separate things, just like how I just don't think about the new star wars films at all.

play NEO TWEWY and save yourself from KH autism

      >TWEWY
I can't stand how it plays, sorry. Maybe the sequel makes it more fun, but I can't play the sequel without completing the first.

        >The mobile game stuff is the only one I'm not looking forward to, honestly.
Unfortunately the mobile stuff ended being the most important lorewise for the whole series and is mandatory if you want to understand the games released after it.

Nah he was good. His problems aren't as debilitating as Neku's but just as damaging in the long run

              >Nah he was good. His problems aren't as debilitating as Neku's but just as damaging in the long run
Neku was a good character and somewhat smart.
Rindo was a fricking annoying moron that didn't man up until the very end and didn't shut up about his shitty chat friend. Everything related to him made me hate the game and wish it was never made.

I think you genuinely didn't understand the game. I'm not saying that in a Ganker way, I'm saying that because the game puts literally tens of hours into exploring why and how Rindo sucks and how many of his attempts to improve are half-hearted and the result of him not even understanding how he sucks. Him getting past that is the entire point.

It's like you played a JRPG and went "why the frick are these the heroes, they're all level 1"

              Anonymous

I understood it completely. I still hate Rindo because he spent most of the game being a useless and annoying moron until near the end.
I don't care that he improves and realizes his mistakes at the end, it still doesn't make up for how awful he was for most of the game.

Not him but is it you don't like how passive he was compared to Neku? Neku was way worse than Rindo in week 1 with how much of a bastard he was

                >Not him but is it you don't like how passive he was compared to Neku?
Pretty much this, i also hated all the time travel bullshit.
                >Neku was way worse than Rindo in week 1 with how much of a bastard he was
He still was a lot better than Rindo and likeable even if he was an butthole.

If you're gonna play chain of memories play the GBA version instead. If not just watch the cutscenes because the PS2 remake is fricking terrible.

If you're playing the 1.5+2.5 collection then you go down the game list in order. If you're not then the game you're looking for is Kingdom Hearts Chain of Memories

To really get the best experience, this is all you need:
    Kh1 > com > kh2 > BBS > end your own life

  10. 3 weeks ago
    Anonymous

    Play it in release order.
    >KH1
    >CoM/Re:CoM (CoM plays better but Re:CoM looks and sounds better)
    >KH2
    >Days (Emulate the DS version or read the manga)
    >BBS
    >Re:Coded (either skip it or emulate, the game plays great but the story is irrelevant)
    >3D
    >0.2
    >KH3 and the DLC
    >Melody of Memory
Ignore all the movie compilations. Play the PC versions of everything when possible— if you can't pirate them (why?) you can buy them on the Epic Games Store. If you don't want to do that, emulate the Final Mix versions on PS2/PSP with an English patch. Watch Back Cover and the Union X cutscenes either right before or right after after KH3 if you give a shit.
Anyone telling you anything else is dead wrong. The only possible mistake on my list is that I can't remember whether BBS or Days released first, but it's not going to affect much if you swap them.
Godspeed, anon. Have fun with the games. It's a wild ride and sometimes it sucks to play, but it's always entertaining.

Oh, also: either play KH2 on Critical or Standard. Beginner is too easy and Proud is just grindier Critical because Critical boosts your damage and gives you extra abilities to start with.

Don't listen to people telling you to stop there's a lot of fun to be had in the games past 2 gameplay and story wise just don't take it so seriously. Also play 2 on critical.

Birth By Sleep is the best Kingdom Hearts game.
