Am I going crazy?

I clearly remember GTA IV being shit.
I clearly remember everyone RECOGNIZING that GTA IV is shit.
I clearly remember how fricking ridiculous it felt when game journos heaped 10/10s and AAA+ and GOTY awards on that clunkly, slow, boring, brown, gloomy-bloomy piece of shit. It was a perfect, commonly-cited example of how professional reviewers cannot be trusted.

But now suddenly there are people who call it a "classic"? Who claim it's better than GTA V, San Andreas or Vice City?
When the frick did this transition happen? Where did these people even come from?

To get it to not crash during certain cutscenes you literally need to force your processor to run on a single core.

Remembering what me and my friends were saying about GTA as kids, we always dreamed about the series becoming more of a life/ roleplaying sim, and IV was definitely a step in that direction.

In general, fans who like a thing will talk about it longer than haters (because they're still playing it and enjoying it), so loud negative opinions tend to drop off over time. But I also think a lot of people realized that fun physics count for a LOT in a GTA game and a lot of people became willing to forgive 4's flaws because at least the physics give you a system that's dynamic and fun to experiment with.

I don't really like GTA V either and I've never even finished it, but I still found it more fun and less visually boring than IV.

I love how detailed GTA IV city is, it's just fun to run around, find stuff and frick around with the NPCs with the funny physics, they also have a few different personalities and interact with each other as well so you can get them to fight each other and call the cops on them etc.
The wanted system is also the best in any GTA game so far and it was completely ruined in GTA V, along with the world which is only made pretty much to be driven through. The forests are completely empty and there is no reason to ever go out into the wilds in V which is a big shame since so much of the map is not Los Santos so basically just empty wasted space even if it's a good change of scenery. But the wanted system is so dumb in GTA V and ruins any fun you can have since the cops just know where you are all the time and shoot on sight

          Anonymous

          >The wanted system is also the best in any GTA game

my idea of fun in a GTA game is not to drive across the island with police spawning around me and chasing me everywhere when I run over a few Black folks. I don't want to spend 10 minutes every time to get away from the police. I want to have fun and commit crimes, not having to deal with the consequences for the rest of my play session.

At least in IV you can hide from the cops within the wanted area and switch cars and drive away unless you go right next to police.

In V if you get even 1 star you can go hide on top a building and the police will just randomly pull over and get up the ladders on the roof just because you are there, you can't hide from them because they know you are there even if they can't see you. They will just wait there until they see you

What V's cop system is supposed to be is cops search the last area they saw you. Instead, they know exactly where you are at all times and will go to the exact bush you're hiding and find you every single time if ANY cop manages to reach your hiding. I don't wanna climb mountains every time I get a 3 star.

                Anonymous

exactly, at least in IV you know where they are going to look for you, you know if you see a police car that it's on it's way to the wanted area so you can just slow down and let them pass and be sneaky and stealthy.

In GTA V you just blast away and try to destroy all the cops so that there is nothing left to see you and then you drive as fast as you can and hope do police car spawns in front of you or you spend the next 5 minutes shooting down helicopters in the wilderness again

                Anonymous

They really needed to combine the systems. You can lose cops via V's way (in IV it was impossible while you were in the circle iirc), but have it so cops can aggressively search and be anywhere while you're in the circle, while leaving it effectively makes losing the level smooth sailing.

GTA 5's cops are by far worse as they don't need direct line of sight to "spot you" still. What's that? A mountain lion saw you kill some grandma? 1 star wanted level fricko

This was one of the dumbest things in V. Why the frick did they remove all police during free roam? Aside of some random bike cop and in front of the police stations, cops only appear during a wanted. I noticed recently when playing V they seemed to have added more police but still... Playing SA and IV there are actually officers roaming around. Feels much more immersive.

the simple answer is this: GTAIV is the most replayable and that it why its reputation has improved over time. its often criticized for its lack of mission variety, but the missions themselves still play better than the other games. meanwhile go back and try and play through SA again and a lot of the missions are drags. once the novelty of the higher variety wears off, the missions in the earlier games just arent fun to play through again

Most of you gays were wrong. I was already arguing with your kind back in 2009. There were some fair complaints, how it lacked certain things compared to San Andreas, but aside of that it was always a groundbreaking masterpiece. Booting it up and marvelling at the physics of it was incredible; nothing like that had ever been done on that level before.

      >le physics
I don't know buddy, running over a poor grandma and seeing her realistically roll over and die from shattered ribs and a skull fracture may be "groundbreaking" in 2008, but it still feels less viscerally satisfying than the Saints Row approach of shooting people into space.

People came to appreciate it as a grounded crime sim. It also has a lot in common with GTA III, which people like.

Vice City is my favourite GTA, but IV is a close second.

San Andreas is overrated as frick. Yes, the scope and the sheer amount of content they crammed into it is impressive, but most of that content wasn’t that great and it also has god awful pacing and it introduced scripted missions to the series.

IV was shit. It had a great story and that was it. Coming from SA that had a ton of side things to do to IV that had you killing pigeons was a huge set back. The final nail in the coffin was V wasn't much better than SA in terms of side activities. The driving was downgraded from IV's nearly perfect driving because "muh online mode". Modifications to vehicles was dogshit and still dog shit, i mean why can't i fricking save a police car in my garage and modify it at the shop? Why can't i pull the waste gate line on a dump trunk and send that b***h to the moon through an intersection. Apparently the moronic artists at R* stop us from doing a ton of different clothing options because "muh clipping issues" when most the shit clips anyways. The list is endless, its at the point where they keep slapping bandaids on things instead of actually fixing the base of it. Why the frick does it take me over a minute to deliver my car to me online and why can i only deliver a vehicle every 5 minutes to me? Its fricking moronic how backwards V went from IV and IV was already a step back from SA.

I never got that because of the janky physics, weird way characters would always get stuck on something stupid, or actually just run into traffic get hit by a car and die. The amount of times I feel like I actually did the mission the game wanted it to be done was so few and far between.

Back in 2008, it was kids that cried about how the game sucked because of no jetpacks and shit.

I feel its short length is actually one of its biggest strengths.

Most GTA games have “that part” of the main story where shit is overly dragged out with filler missions. As solid as IV’s overall story is, there are parts like the Bernie missions which are just a complete slog. VC gets straight to the point and has a much tighter narrative focus because of it. They even make the Phil Cassidy, Love Fist, Cuban and Haitian arcs optional to improve the flow of the main story.

Its the setting, atmosphere, characters, music etc that make the game one of my favourites to this day, but the gameplay is rough. My issue with TECHNOLOGY in 4 was that it was trying so fricking hard to showcase TECHNOLOGY without adding much to the game. Okay cool body reactions to being shot and stuff, oh okay trash is intractable, or cars can be twisted into scrap. Was a cool but it obviously had severe negative affects when running it on a console that only hurt the experience.

I remember the PC port was a disaster and indeed there was some contention around the game but I also remember loving the game. I don't remember the game being widely hated at all, back then I remember going to forums and shit to talk about it and most people were enthusiastic. You're right that after GTA V came out, IV has been retroactively turned into a magic masterpiece with literally no flaws. This is typical contrarian behavior, you can see it with other games as well, like with (original) Nier and with Automata.

GTA IV literally saved Rockstar from being bought up by EA.
The reason it was worse than its predecessors was the engine and the story but it still bought RS around 10 years time before being cucked.

I recently re-visited GTAV remembering it being really good from highschool. I got up to the first heist mission and dropped it soon after.

First off, it looked amazing and Los Santos is an awesome city. It helps that I first experienced it on fricking Xbox 360 and now played it on PC, but still. I had a moment of pure awe where I swapped over to Michael and he was just in a park right in the middle of the city where people were doing yoga, there were dogs playing, there was a helicopter tour going on overhead, and blimps and planes were in the distance. I just stopped and really soaked it in.

Every other part of the game feels directionless, though. The missions feel all over the place, Michael and Trevor are just completely unrelatable and in some cases I outright hated them (especially Trevor), and the game just tries to be way too wacky while dealing with stuff like corruption and shadow ops by the government.

Also, and this stung the most, the shooting was just not good. GTAIV had very responsive, unpredictable (in a good way) combat. You shoot a cop, when he falls over he might accidentally discharge his gun. They might fall down stairs, or trip into their friends. It was awesome. GTAV just felt, and I hate when people use this word but I can't think of anything else to describe it, but soulless. Even the guns felt like they were ripped from an asset library. None of them felt unique. They all felt exactly the same and I couldn't pick any of the sounds or handling of them out from one another if you put a gun to my head. Which really surprises me because there were like 4x the number of guns in V than in IV.

That's exactly how I felt about V since launch day. I couldn't believe the shooting was a step backwards from IV.
It has the same problem every game released since 2010 has, the guns feel and sound like weak peashooters.

SA has a lot of soul I'll give you that.
Being the best selling game of the best selling console of all time means that even third worlders know the game, but the praise the game gets is just nostalgia.

The problem was that IV cut them out instead of making them better. Some SA missions are antiquated but at the time they were on par if not improvements of the GTA formula

GTA IV has a lot of objective downgrades from SA. Customisation is out, minigames are out, and sidequests are either nerfed or annoying. But the gunplay is really good and the plot is decent, even if it's disconnected from the gameplay itself. The plot choices you can make are an interesting mechanic. I do think it's a misstep to make it realistic in the way that plenty other post-9/11 media did.

There was always a firm split in peoples opinions on GTA 4

Contrary to the moron posts earlier in this thread, the pro GTA4 crowd tended to skew a lot older. They liked the more serious and mature take on a crime story.

The anti GTA4 crowd tended to be the younger, still in high school crowd on Ganker who thought that we needed GTA4 to be more like Saints Row or GTA SA. They liked how over the top SA was and wanted more of it. If anything, looking back at the PS2 trilogy, San Andreas was the odd man out with how ridiculous things got story wise (We never saw homies with jetpacks in Vice City, or 3)

And before you all start b***hing, I'm old enough to have played GTA1 and 2 before the PS2 even ever came out.

Except it's true. If you were actually alive at the time you would remember the various informal polls we'd have about what age people were and favorite GTA. There even was once a GTA meme inspired by the dues ex meme of favorite GTA games. In general, the younger kids wanted more San Andreas, and hated 4 because it wasn't it. If you disagree, you clearly weren't around at the time to have seen it.

I don't know where the idea that zoomers prefer IV over V came from.
It's always the kiddos sucking off the shitshow that was V.

Older people had just came from 3 -> VC -> SA which were all 9/10 games, and then 4 came along and it fricking blew ass because it was right around the time when the whole industry switched over to a point where everything had to be MUH REALISM and MUH GRIMDARK.

We're talking to the launch era reception of 4, vs the post 5 reception of 4. After 5 came out as mentioned in a different post, people who were hankering for San Andreas 2.0 got what they wanted and realized it wasn't what they actually wanted.

A lot of the launch era reception of 5, was that the game was clearly rushed, and they took out everything in 4 that made the combat interesting/challenging. And the general thoughts were that the overworld was bland as frick, but Rockstar fanboys kept trying to max copium by saying "LIKE THE OCEAN, IS LIKE HUGE BRO!"

3, SA and VC were all about just being fun and wild and whacky. They had tons of over the top shit that was constantly getting wilder and wilder. Everything in GTA IV felt like the exact opposite. They tried to make everything as realistic as possible and thus toned everything down. This meant unfun driving mechanics, meh shooting mechanics, meh weapons, meh radio stations, meh characters, meh side activities, meh NPC chatter, etc. etc.

I thought SA was hilarious at the time because you could tell they wanted to tell a serious story about CJ avenging momma or whatever, but then you look at the stats screen and realize you murdered at least 2000 people, stole a harrier jet and started a gambling empire along the way because a homie gotsta get paid loc.

I almost wonder if Los Santos was a self contained story arc that got split into the bookends of the game when they decided to make the game way bigger? In a VC sized game he could've spent the middle of the game working for the mafia or Caesar's crew or some shit, bust his brother out of prison with their help, then pick up with the riot segment

Muscle and sex appeal impacted dating, every single feature was there for a reason in SA, even if it just impacted one small mini-game or activity, it had a purpose and helped the game feel way more immersive, in 4 they just threw it all away hoping that the new physics and story carried the game, it didn't.

I sincerely hope you are joking. 90% of the weapons in GTA IV sounded like absolute fricking garbage. All gun shots sound like you're listening to them through a tin can, they're all extremely hollow and have no bass.

It's nostalgia. Just look at Call of Duty and how people now remember it as a classic franchise and their 360 games were solid campaigns with soulful multiplayer maps, even tho back in the day it was considered a shit generic franchise that kickstarted a horrible trend of brown-tinted no-freedom linear military FPS.

In 10 years people will be nostalgic over the PS4.

People were immature and didn't understand GTA4. It was too grim and too dark for the rest of the series. The nihilistic narrative about the end of the American dream almost killed GTA as a whole and you can see that in GTA5 overcorrecting itself into a wacky fun land where nothing is serious, nothing means anything and none of the characters act like anything other than a carricature.

I know what sort of person Niko is, but can you tell me anything about Michael, Franklin or the "crazy" guy?

I was 20 when it came out. I thought it was lame that they removed the RPG stuff and that it was only a city instead of a state, but I ended up really liking it. In hindsight, its cool that SA was so ambitious but it doesn't really hold up.

The driving it great once you get the hang of it, and the physics are really cool. I hated that they removed the brutal ragdolls from V.

Nowadays, I hate that it started the SERIOUS, MATURE STORYTELLING era of Rockstar.

The serious mature story telling era? I assume you mean the three games they made like that

      Gta4, rdr, and rdr2.

Thematically, rdr series is more in line with 4 than 5 and it's cringe shit.

V has some wackiness but its trying really hard to tell a serious story. Same as IV, which still had a lot of the silly racial stereotype characters and the beeg American teetees!

Yeah I'm going to have to disagree with V telling a serious story. This is literally the first time I've ever heard anyone make that claim. But we're both entitled to our opinions.

GTA 4 lacks so much content vs it’s predecessor it’s hilarious. On top of that it looks lifeless and everything is grey. They took SA, removed the extremities and fun and ended up with something about as exciting as working a shift in an office.

GTA 4 is HORSESHIT and I won’t hear anyone try to claim it wasn’t, it’s the least fun entry in the whole franchise, which for a normal game is terrible, but for a sandbox open world it’s abysmal.

My only problem is that when you finished it, they didn't let you do any more. I liked the randomized nature of the PS2 era. Not to say I'd keep booting up GTA 4 to play it, but gta4s biggest weakness to me is it's lack of additional side content.

The only reason its still part of the culture is because open world and the edginess of it mesmerized the brainlets who grew up with it. GTA was unironically the Fortnite of late millennials early gen Z. It never had good gameplay and it never had a good story.

How old are you? I was in my last year of high school when it came out and it was pretty well received by pretty much everyone I knew at the time. It did suck that it removed some features that were popular in San Andreas, but overall the game was praised for having great writing, great graphics (for the time), and an excellent sound track.

My only complaints were that the game was smaller than SA and you didn't have the weight mechanics like working out to get buff or eating to become a fatass.

People say IV is shit because they remember making that judgement when they played it 15 years ago when they saw it wasn't exactly like SA.
Now that years have passed, some people gave it another shot after reaching adult hood.
They realized once you play it, all that autistic hatred just fades away lol.

It's still a downgrade over SA. IV gets more leniency now because the missing features like planes and tanks came back in V. It wasn't autistic hatred, it was dislike and uncertainty over where the series was going.

    >When the frick did this transition happen? Where did these people even come from?

There was a marketing team that came on here pretending together in a thread that Gameboy games had "so many classics" and how quality the games were. That is fricking complete bullshit. Consoles ALWAYS had slimmed down versions of PC games and Gameboy had games with the same titles that didn't even resemble the console or PC versions. Gameboy fricking sucked balls and even this Asian weeb kid was showing me the DS years after I was finally glad to have gotten rid of my Gameboy and I clearly wasn't missing shit. He was showing me castle Vania (which was always so boring I couldn't even play that game).
