It's alright. It inspired the collectathon fad and led to the superior Banjo Kazooie, I guess.

i didn't even know it was originally a pejorative until i used this board, well ya know words change a lot, get with the times cause it's just a descriptor these days

it is a pejorative because collecting exudes boringness, so a boring-a-thon is clearly a joke taking a shot at a thing's quality. Platformer is better because typically platforming is the means for collecting trinkets, and be serious: trinkets making fun sounds when you get them IS fun.

Banjo fricking sucks. M64, Crash and Spyro are the only good 5th gen platformers.

not any more than it inspired the 3d platforming fad

SM64 has 120 stars in it. 38 of them are collection based. 23 red coin stars and 15 hundred-coin stars. However, the player only needs to get 60 stars to beat the game, with the 15 hundred-coin stars being completely optional.
A player can still get 45 stars if they stop at every level when the red coin star shows up. Add the 7 castle secret stars that aren't red coin stars and you have 52 stars.
If the player gets the incredibly easy lethal lava land red coin star and completes the level, they only need 4 more stars, which can easily be found with a little exploration in each level.

The point is SM64 is not a collectathon. The game can be easily beaten without having to deal with collecting much at all. The only thing forcing you to do the 100-coin stars or red coin stars is your completionist gaming OCD.

I don't get how Mario was able to move so athletically for being 64 years old.

The game is actually called Super Mario Sexy Four.

OP's that never reply to their own threads should be banned, since they just drop shit on a board and then leave.

No 3D platformer has matched it, unfortunately. Sunshine and Odyssey are pretty good though

For what it's worth, I think the DS version is a good companion to the original. I play each at a different pace. Although, I was 1 coin away from collecting 100 in the Goomboss stage but I died. I wanted to see if you earn a star but I assume you do not. I am playing with action bottons assigned to the d-pad and movement done by the stylus. It's a charming if not mildly frustrating way to play a classic on the go (I don't go anywhere though).
But yes, SM64 is an innovative masterpiece and has not been surpassed. But really, though... Really... Admit Galaxy is up there among the best things N has done.

i like the DS game, but i play it on a DS, i presume most people that hate it are emulating gays. there's certainly a wow factor if you play it on hardware, you get to carry the game around, and it's better in some aspects. nowadays people will just emulate the original, so it kinda writes itself. very underrated re-release honestly, no one seemed to 'get it'

More of an Ocarina of Time guy myself but that game wouldn't exist without Super Mario 64.
