Angry Ash

Is it just me or did Ash use to be a lot angrier and more serious in the 1st season?

The Pokemon anime in general used to be a little more edgier in the beginning.

Pokemon wasn't yet a massive global franchise that needed to be concerned with appealing to the absolute lowest common denominator on said global level, so Ash was allowed to have an actual brash and hotheaded character.

Yes, because he was built as a true character starting from scratch with a lot of negative attitudes that would change as the series progressed, with his defeat in the league and his talk with Richie being his point of maturation, that's where the He had to finish his journey as a protagonist.

But the series was a success and TPC executives decided to keep him as a mascot, preventing the new writers from giving him a permanent change, so they began to give more emphasis to rivals or other characters because Ash would maintain a status quo of eternal child of 10 years traveling in an endless summer.

He was just another hot-heated shounen protagonist at the time. Then when the franchise got more corporate and safe they had to remove any negative personality traits ensuring no bad feefees in the viewers to achieve maximum profit margins.

Pokemon from the outset was a soulless cynical corporate attempt to get children addicted to FOMO
Parents were calling this out back in 1998

It's wild when zoomies try and act like Nintendo, SEGA, and Sony weren't giant billion-dollar multinational megaconglomerates in the 90s. Nintendo as a company was a hundred years old when Pokemon released

Amerifats kept complaining about everything in the series that they could think of so they toned it down massively to be as safe as possible. Blame them for ruining yet another good thing.

Americans were the ones who liked angry and "roasting" Ash which was played up even more in the 4kids dub. Japan on the other hand don't like the back and forth bantz which is why they favor the more docile Pokegirls like Dawn and Serena over Misty.

Misty's personality was gone when she got Togepi anyway.

They didn't complain about Ash specifically but all the b***hing they did about the series in general made them want to play it safe with everything. You never saw any other market whine about more shit than America.

If there's anything that the american fanbase complained about more than Japan it was that Ash was still around at all (not counting the voice actor changes obviously), which is why Origins was much better received in the west compared to in Japan. And obviously TPC had no intention to get rid of Ash for many years.

The American fanbase are used to action packed characters, which Ash doesn't fit in their category.

In the first episode when Gary drives away from Oak’s lab Ash makes a determined face and pumps himself up exclaiming “rival!”. The face and gesture he does could also make it look like he’s seething with anger so in the dub he instead says “that Gary!”.

What I never understood is why censorship with food? Even the Simpsons in their first seasons had no problem promoting culinary diversity, it's not like sushi was going to turn your children into communists.

Pokemon anime is geared exclusively for kids and 4kids are notorious for censoring and localizing seemingly random things in all the anime they dubbed. One episode had Meowth lighting a match and they censored it by replacing it with a purple striped birthday candle

          >One episode had Meowth lighting a match and they censored it by replacing it with a purple striped birthday candle
Why? Both can cause fires, a small lamp would make sense, both because it is safer for children and they can be used to promote the sale of merchandise.

Also it is extremely stupid to censor that in a world where a child has a lizard with a tail of fire.

I knew a lot of kids that would have a box of matches and then light them up for fun so I could see why they wouldn't want to "promote it". Still wish they wouldn't have

You'd be a lot angrier too if you were constantly getting nagged to replace a bike that your rat destroyed and now you find out new ones cost a million bucks.

even now, a modern bike costs just 50000 yen, so the "1 million yen meme lolz" is just a game tactic so you got the bike for free, but forced you to do quest for it instead.
