      out it's nothing like those games

      I had this intuition. The thing that exposes this for me the most is the grouping of "Outer Wilds" and Rain World as if they're remotely close to each other in any respect. I've come to learn a lot of morons somehow just don't understand what makes Outer Wilds different. Ive heard people describe animal well as a "secret hunting" game, whereas Outer Wilds is one of the most focused and internally coherent games ever. Let alone one of the LEAST videogamey games I've ever played, and that is its strength. Outer wilds doesn't have any "secrets" the entire point of its gameplay is for you to NATURALLY explore and uncover almost everything because there's no way to tell what info is important from another. TECHNICALLY speaking there can be "secrets" if you consider achievement hunting and shit like the comet a secret. But it's not "secrets" like other games are. That's exactly what makes it special. Different. How "natural" it is.

      morons don't understand that. Fricking worthless losers, this is sometimes why I hate when a certain type of game gets popular, people just start talking about it in the stupidest ways ever.

    I'm still missing a round recess for the seahorse area. I wondered if the bat dropped it but no luck. Any hints?

      Run full speed and throw the frisbee one frame before the top of your jump and you should immediately board it.

      If you jump and throw the disc at just the right time near the apex of your jump arc, you will land on the disc. This room requires you to chain multiple such jumps in a row.

            past the s medal door is what you seek

            Found it, there's bouncy ball blocks specifically where you get the remote.

            You need the remote to get the bouncy ball so this one is effectively one of the very last things you can possibly get, and requires being so desperate that you'd just wander back into the snake area or that you'd remember the blocks being unusual looking in all 3 or so areas where you can use the ball. Kind of a dick move from the developer.

                >pads the game out
                moron, that IS the game. That's the whole appeal, scouring every nook and cranny to see what you can interact with and where you can traverse. Stop blaming the game for your own idiocy

              • 3 weeks ago
                Anonymous

                >That's the whole appeal
                The appeal for me was the great movement physics and tools and ways you could use them, not rechecking every room 4 times to look for codes like this

                The grass is a barcode. I made this from it and plugged it into an online translator and got 18756753. Play that on your flute in that room.

                You like autistic indie games designed to waste time by bashing your head against a wall looking for esoteric codes for post-post game stuff. Other people don't.

    I have all the eggs, played the song for the key, and now I just need to exit. What's the general area to actually leave, and why are there still blocks I can't break?

    • 3 weeks ago
      Anonymous

      Exit actually doesn't require the egg song. Just the reward for collecting all the eggs. It's somewhere inside the final area.

  44. 3 weeks ago

    I think it would've been nice if it showed you an example of what the post game items are for so you have an idea to mark on your map whenever you see a special block. Like a chest blocked by the Tetris blocks surrounded by normal blocks.

      There's an obvious dirt patch for some areas, and other areas are reasonably intuitive. You don't really have to drop it on every pixel, just look for suspicious spots or dead ends that look like they lead somewhere

              that section is not something you need pen and paper to solve. that comes later. in that section you just look at the map, memorize the general direction you have to go (just use the goddamn warp room) and bam, you're basically done.

                La Mulana is fun until it isn't. The puzzles aren't really allthat interesting in general and at some point it just becomes annoying. I quit after getting into false eden or whatever it's called. Was fun up to that point but eventually the interest wanes

                >This game and La Mulana are literally nothing
                True. One is a 4 hour long game where the dev shoved in a bunch of shitty puzzles at the end to add more "gameplay" once he realized his game was too short. The other is a 30-40 hour long adventure designed around the puzzles from the start.

                I just wish it had more and better music. It probably wouldn't really fit the aesthetic but it's 99% ambience sounds, it really could have used some music to break up the monotomy.
                Since people mentioned La Mulana, the music in that is absolutely godlike. It pushes you onwards to explore and motivates you, it sets that sort of adventurous mood that makes you want to keep going through all the bullshit. With Animal Well the sound design just feel trapped, lost, and confused, which I get is the intent, but I feel like it could have been handled differently.

    As an avid puzzle game player, I'm really struggling to like this game.
    I guess I'm more into games where you know you're in a puzzle and have to solve it (stuff like Stephen's Sausage Roll, Baba Is You etc).
    The main issue I'm having with Animal Well is that I get into a room and don't even know if I'm able to solve it at that particular point. The fact that can get you a long way back to the last checkpoint doesn't help as well.
    I know this is an 100% skill issue, but I think it can be more enjoyable if considered an adventure game instead of a puzzle one.

    • 3 weeks ago
      Anonymous

      Play A Can of Wormholes or A Monster's Expedition if you haven't, those games are nearly perfect in my eyes. I thought Animal Well was like a 7/10 at best

              • 3 weeks ago
                Anonymous

                It has no randomization of any kind.

                I don't like being forced to the same thing over and over again.
                Should have added a way to skip floors after you solved it.

                I can definitely see it giving that impression early on, but that just means you haven't explored enough of the game yet.
                There's a ton of different ways to skip floors and go to whatever place you want starting from the first floor on a clean save within minutes. It unironically takes far, far, less time to get around than traveling somewhere in Animal Well.

              • 3 weeks ago
                Anonymous

                The thing is, traveling in Animal Well doesn't take brainpower. Solving the floors in Void Stranger does.
                I can totally see the appeal, but I just can't deal with having to repeat half of the game when you accidentally frick up.

                Void Stranger spoilers, don't read if you think you might ever play it: The goal of the game isn't really to get to the end without losing your lives, that's how it appears at first when you are starting the game, but it goes much deeper than crawling down the maze and solving sokoban puzzles. The focus shifts pretty quickly after your first one or two runs. There's a lot of frickery that lets you freely travel around and manipulate your surroundings and plenty of stuff that lets you outright break the puzzles, in a lot of ways it's quite literally a game about conquering this ridiculous labyrinth, becoming its master, and understanding it.

            >not super popular/widely known
            The goat in this sense is the DROD series, no question. It's a series of 5 games with puzzles that can get devilish hard. Also, there is a huge community of custom made puzzles, with more than 25k puzzles.
            I'd recommend starting with DROD 4 because it's an "introductory" game in terms of mechanics and such: https://store.steampowered.com/app/314330
            Other great games that fit this category:
            >Quadrax Series;
            >Diamond Joyce;
            >Bean and Nothingness (criminally underrated, is probably one of the hardest and more engaging puzzle games ever and no one talks about it);
            >Altered;
            >Dungeon and Puzzles;
            >The Golem (another extremely hard one, but very satisfying at the same time);
            >Magnet Block (same as above);
            >Princess Castle Quest;
            >14 Minesweeper Variants;
            >Tactical Nexus (their pricing model is pure cancer, and visually the game is horrendous, but once you get into the swing of things, you realize that this is a masterpiece);

      it doesn't neatly correspond to the binary of before

      • 3 weeks ago
        Anonymous

        it is showing that 3 and 0 give binary 1100, you concatenate the numbers, not sum

        • 3 weeks ago
          Anonymous

          i have to say this didn't help at all. i get that we're getting the bunny's indexes from the conversion of 30 base 4 = 12, but i don't see how that helps me other than the order of the directions, i just don't know how to get a movement direction from the ears.

          • 3 weeks ago
            Anonymous

            each bunny has 2 ear positions, the first one is the index (i.e the order of the bunny in the sequence)
            the binary conversion is there so you can order the bunnies and use their second ear positions to get the sequence you need. the second position are already the directions, no decoding needed

            • 3 weeks ago
              Anonymous

              i actually think it's kind of bullshit the second ear set isn't a cypher but the first set is.

        • 3 weeks ago
          Anonymous

          there's not much to it

          If you jump and throw the disc at just the right time near the apex of your jump arc, you will land on the disc. This room requires you to chain multiple such jumps in a row.

        • 3 weeks ago
          Anonymous

          I have no idea how to make webms, but all you need to do is jump while you're running and release your disc at the top of your jumping height.

            Anonymous

            ok i got it. holding run is what makes it work.

      Learn how to jump and throw the disc so you immediately start riding it, then do that three times.

    • 3 weeks ago
      Anonymous

      as the guys said, but you can also do it with the wheel
      jump, open the inventory before hitting your head on the wheel, swap to bubble, blow one while still ascending and land on it
      than for the last floor, the wheel gets stuck, but you can jump and spam it to inch forward

    • 3 weeks ago
      Anonymous

      I did it with just the wheel. If you spam jump while rolling against a wall you can climb. You can just barely climb up the holes by spamming like a moron. The final gap is too small, but if you drop the wheel and bring it back up repeatedly you get stuck in the spikes and can shimmy through.

      This is the dumbest possible way to do it and I don't recommend it, but I was playing blind and had never learned the disc trick.

    I beat the game I think, the whole manticore chase sequence being the final boss I wanna say.

    I think it's like a solid 7/10, would've been 8 but I really abhored that one section with having to take the mock disk all the way to the dog shrine for the flame, that was really annoying. It's undeniably well designed, but I wasnt particularly surprised by much of anything nor really got attached to the world itself, so I dont really care for the egghunt or the whole ARG that Im assuming is that ticking clock or whatever.

    Honestly a little perplexed behind the 9/10 and 10/10 by journalists, it almost sounds like they havent played THAT many games to rate it so highly but I also think it stems from a bit from me not particularly fond of puzzle-centric games like this.

      What puzzle game would get 9/10 for you ?

      • 3 weeks ago
        Anonymous

        hard to say, again not exactly my genre since I'm fond of metroidvannias with fun movement mechanics like super metroid and the like. The closest analogue I can compare Animal Well too is probably ESA where I did do all of the postgame for that, but also found it underwhelming and more annoying with how goddawful backtracking in that game is. I'd imagine the postgame for Animal Well goes very deep in that regard but like I kinda dont care for much of anything from the base game to compel me to delve deeper. I am burnt out atm so maybe I'll revisit it down the line, I'll get those eggs eventually, I have at least 23.

        Anonymous

        Nah, anyone who continues past the credits is a moron. Once you realize there are puzzles you are not meant to solve yourself the entire game is ruined. It's impossible to tell which puzzles are meant to solve yourself or which ones are meant to be some dumb ARG shit that requires Discord/a guide. That kind of design is bottom of the barrel shit and is never interesting.

        but that's what it is until the first credits roll and it's very good at that. I agree that these whaddya call it puzzles that are so cryptic you need a community to solve them suck wiener because either you're on the train in time to solve them together or you're just left with googling the solutions

    Would like this game much more if it wasn't a platformer, wastes so much time that way. Oh well. Crow Country is cool.

      Go right two-three screens, there's a rat.

      The fish guys in the pipes suck in bubbles and make them big enough to jump in.

      Those are your two hints.

    I've never been here before, literally just opened the sink crow door just now to get to the elevator, but this chest is already opened. Bug or some feature I'm not aware of? Same with one chest underneath some birds I still don't even know how to get to that also appears to have already been opened

    I'm moronic, any hints as to how to get to the top level here? I can't figure out how to reverse the direction of the blue blocks.

    I've been looking for the last match for 3 hours now, can't find it (found the candle). There are a few chests i haven't figured out yet, but i am pretty sure that all of them are egg chests.
    Is it so well hidden or am i just blind? Can you get it pre-win?
