I'm sad that this game didn't go the Rain World route. The puzzle collecting aspect of the game is cool... but underwhelming. The animals in the game would've made for some cool predators.

Tunic was charmingly fun. It had some forced soul but overall I enjoyed my experience. Only thing I hated about the game was the last section where you had to fight the final boss dark souls style

Despite my post I did like Tunic a lot through the main game, really great art direction and everything. Hunting for puzzles and secrets was incredibly boring in it though in my opinion. Once you figure out the gimmick you just go around doing the thing, getting a shiny doodad for it and nothing else. I'm not very far into Animal Well yet but it at least seems like you get way more out of uncovering secrets.

      Anonymous

the timing and distance is constant on screen transition. so if you jump from one to the next in the first screen. you can literal just repeat that movement to jump onto the next one in the next screen.

      >its bad game design
maybe... i didn't struggle with that part and was just impressed that the timing was perfect on the next screen and hope i can get that to work in my game i am working on.

my least favorite part of the game so far was the Ghoast - Dog/Cat disc thing. i eventually worked out i could go to the egg room -> get to the fast travel room -> into bear. and that made good distance.

but there were several times where the ghost would be right on top of me while i was trying to jump (especially right at the end with the last ladder before you drop off the disc)

I just finished getting the 4th flame and onto the last part of the main game. Gonna Finnish that off tomorrow after work. been enjoying it so far but the Ghost dog chase was just... out of place with the rest of the games pacing. I have something similar to this in my game i am working on and now realize how just a little bit of time pressure can make you frick up simple things and to be very careful with how much time pressure to put on players and when is an apropriate time to do it... i feel like right at the end of the game for tension and a big payoff.. but having that in the middle of the game and then nothing like it again is a negative for me. i hated it.

        Anonymous

I got it after a while, since the gaps are all the same length you can "feel" the jump and go by instinct
It is still shit design that you can't use you eyes to make the jump, but it's not an awful jump, at least.

        Anonymous

"bad game design" shouldn't be a valid sentence. people who overstandardize everything make design streamlines and force out more experimental games out of the market.
games should be done factually, as what works best for the goals you wish to achieve and what limitations you have.
animal well gameplay is focused in particular rooms and multi-room encounters are sparse, so static camera allows for better compositions and higher emphasis on the contents of the room, as they're all static and easier to follow.
a singular exception to this shouldn't warrant a complete rework.

          Anonymous

I think it's a non-issue and didn't have trouble with that jump but there's no rework needed, a simple small platform between screens would solve this without trivializing the platforming.

      >postpostpostgame: nonexistent
you're not expected to find it as a lone player, but by doing certain out of order actions you can get certain animals to trigger lines of dialogue in a glitched font, which when placed on a grid form a path you need to traverse from the bunny temple to find a time capsule. once found, there's a new hole in the wall between the chest where you find the map and the entrance to the manticore, which no one has yet figured out the significance of

The time capsule island is located at the same space that the map room is. By destroying those tiles in the void, the tiles at the same location in the well are destroyed.

Are the egg rewards all just as stupid as the pencil? I mean, what can the pencil do that a stick can't? The puzzles here don't seem so complex to require more.
I literally lost all desire to backtrack for them.

ARG shit was a mistake, in trying to figure out the solution which requires you to look up certain things I already got the rewards and secrets spoiled for myself. I don't know why devs think this garbage is good when only the first few people to the party will ever get to feel the sense of discovery

the blades of grass are they code, try to translate them into numbers

connect your printer and play for a whilte
if you don't have printer, then you can still solve it with a flute
          the code is in dogs
you could say that it's a bark code

Maybe, just maybe, it's something you don't have a tool for? Why such a simple thought didn't cross your miniscule, microscopic mind even once?
When you a pit and don't have something to help you cross it, the first thought should be "hmm, maybe i am missing something", not "i should wait for cosmic rays to change my position to the other side of the room".
Vacuum in your cranium creates enough negative pressure to power a turbine generator that would supply my entire house continuously.

Bruteforcing it with trial and error doesn't make you smart. It doesn't require knowledge, just enough volition to do it until you achieve what you want. Even primates are documented to have basic problem solving skills, which you sadly lack.

Just got all eggs and got the second credits. Looked up a couple rabbits and decided not to look for any more because it's just ARGshit. Cool little game, but the increasingly complex and obscure puzzles don't really lead to increasingly cool rewards. It's not like Void Stranger where the ultimate ending is the most batshit insane wild thing you've ever seen and it felt like you really uncovered something massive so all your effort wasn't for naught. It's actually the opposite in this game, the more deep into the autism puzzles you get the less you're rewarded.

I think this game would have benefitted from more lore. In games like Void Stranger or Rain World it felt rewarding to find secrets, even if you didn't actually get anything material from it and it was just dialogue or a new character or a crazy sequence.

I got both endings but did not like the rabbits, will I enjoy Void Stranger? Are the late-game puzzles also unreasonably cryptic?

Also yeah the lore wasn't there but the game ironically made up for it in immersion. Hearing something make noise so far away in the world then being able to see the source of it was one of the coolest experiences I've ever had in a game.

        Anonymous

Void Stranger is very similar in how the puzzle mechanic "meta" changes over the course of the game, if you know what I mean. As for the cryptic-ness of the puzzles, nothing in Void Stranger is as obtuse as the rabbits.

Also play the La Mulana games, they mog the frick out of Animal Well in basically every aspect. Better metroidvania, better lore, better exploration, actual enemies and bossfights, more satisfying and complex puzzles.

Where in my post did I say I disliked puzzles?

              Anonymous

Complaining that puzzles don't have enough of a reward to justify their completion you mean that the completion of puzzle itself isn't enough, so you don't actually enjoy completing puzzles.

                Anonymous

There's a certain cost/benefit ratio when it comes to puzzle games, and the more amount of time it takes to complete any given puzzle the less satisfaction you get out of it. The postgame of Animal Well gets into that territory of "the satisfaction you get finding solutions to the few puzzles that are left don't justify the time spent trying to figure them out". The bulk of the game is pretty snappy, and you're constantly getting that high from solving puzzles one after another. If you're stuck, you can move to a different area and keep getting that satisfaction relatively quickly. I'm just saying that giving more rewards than JUST the satisfaction of solving the puzzle would make it feel less like a waste of time.

Alright I'm buying Void Stranger off your word, any advice going in? Gonna check out La Mulana too.

Beat the game and onto post game stuff, need a bit of guidance on what to do with the hidden 5 direction/note combinations around the map. At first i thought it was related to the flute diagram you see when you first find it, being theres 5 notes in each cardinal direction of the map and you need make a 40 note sequence. But then i found 4 clusters hiding in the bottom right so it puts that theory out. How many of these am i supposed to be finding?

I also found two rooms with 'circular recessions' and one of them has a giant kangaroo out front so it seems like i have to find the kangaroo again, except I saw it once and it ganked me and i've never seen it again...this a wandering legendary pokemon type deal and it just appears in random rooms from now on?

Lastly is the room with the expressions key, bunch of skulls piled up let me get the b.b. wand but obviously the chest below is inaccessible. I assume the skulls are tracking my death count and the only way to get that chest is to replay the game and not die getting to that point? Also, the giant clock has doors that I assume open with rewards for speed running (did notice that it chimes throughout the map on the hour.) Anything i can do with in on this playthrough?

Mostly curious about the note stuff. Just a hint to push me in the right direction would be nice.

Referring to the block right at the start with candles embedded in it i assume. I confirmed it was a locked door after I lit a candle elsewhere and it lit up in the block. Thnx for the tip about where the final one match is. Hope its that one I definitely used the matches out of order. Also if youre hinting that I was supposed to hold onto the keys I found around the map (I did notice that some locked doors could very well be skipped) its too late i used em all. do the puzzles first? lmao skill diff

I am a better person than you for not putting up with this shit. I don't even accept this shit in a fricking horror game, what the HELL makes you think its acceptable in a metroidvania? I refuse to play a singleplayer game that gives me panic attacks and stress attacks. Only multiplayer games are allowed to raise my heart-rate above 70bpm.

I assume he means the manticore. If that's the case he's super easy to deal with. Just don't get too far away from him and swap to lantern when he's about to do lasers to interrupt it.
