Animal Well

Am I able to do this part with my current equipment? It appears to be impossible. But This is the only room that has a clear objective, so it's either work this room out, or make another circuit around the map to hopefully stumble into that I need.

I wanted to beat the game without a guide. But I might be at my breaking point right now. For now, all I want to know, is if I should continue attempting to clear this room, or frick off and do something else instead.

I guess this thread can be general Animal Well stuff too.

You have the one tool that you need, yes.
    Hint: It's round./spoiler]

That's funny, because all the objects in the game are round. Or cylindrical. Which is just a round thing made long.

There are two ways to do it. And you could do either.

You already have the means to solve it.

Oh jeez. I can't believe I have the means. I can't for the life of me figure it out. I get the feeling that I was supposed to enter the room by learning some advanced technique with either the bubble or disk. But I cheesed my way into the room by just doing the old standing on the disk trick. Achieving it by just manipulating some collision. But because I did that, I failed to learn the intended super strat where you immediately jump on top of the disk out of a throw or something like that. idk, I'm just guessing here.

So my question is: should I already know some advanced tricks applicable to this room? Or no. If yes, then how might I learn the tricks?

You didn't need it to enter the room.
I never learned the trick at all.
Just bruteforced this section with wheel and bubble.

I used the wheel for the whole thing. You can jump into the lights to gain height, and for the last squeeze you just jump and turn it off/on get through.

This was one of the parts of the game I hated the most because I did not know about the expected solution until I looked it up. There's absolutely no reason to know you can do what you need to do. The technique itself isn't difficult and doesn't take but a few minutes to get the hang of though.

You can jump into the lights to gain height
You can what now? My wheel barely lifts 5 pixels off the ground. It can't reach the light up ahead. And as for the nearby light, it just rubs up against it with no real reaction. As far as I can tell, lights are completely non-interactive. Save for the swaying they do when you touch them. So what the heck are you talking about "jump into the lights to gain height"?

waitwaitwaitwait what?! Is that intended? Or is that just what you did? I would like to know the intended method. Because there's no fricking way the game tells you to use a controller when you launch the game for the first time, and then expects you to use a mouse to complete tasks.

Oh my god. it's actually possible. Now I'm mad. And how were they going to teach the player that it's possible? Or were we just supposed to deduce it on our own? I we were, then frick that bullshit.

It's something you have to deduce on your own but the puzzle you're on is the only time in the game I'm aware of that requires it and while it's the easiest way to do it there are other solutions. And what you're doing right now is actually totally optional even for the post-game content.

are post 6+ hours actually fun?

I thought the second act of the game was better than the first act, its where the games tools and logic really come together.
Once you've gotten all the games achievements/trophies and finished the immediate post game there's more shit on top of that but I didn't really bother with it, felt like I had seen the bulk of the games content by that point.

"Easiest" is not easy enough. The timing is fricking moronic. I question if it was even intended. Unlike the bubble technique which was clearly designed to be exacted with relative ease. You have to get this dumb disk trick in like 1 frame.

            >And what you're doing right now is actually totally optional even for the post-game content.

Never have I ever jumped on my own disk without the assistance of a wall. The timing is too tight. Even knowing what to expect, I'm over here grinding the level with like a 10% success rate. It's abysmal. I seriously doubt the technique is intended actually. The developers showed they were a lot smarter than this. Suddenly ramping up their low-execution game to kaizo hack levels for 1 puzzle doesn't make sense.

The timing is genuinely tighter than most kaizo tricks but you only need to do it three times, it's doable. It's a bunny puzzle and most of those are considerably more bullshit than the rest of the game, this one is pretty tame.

Speedrunners and even challengerunners aren't necessarily good players. They only become such because they've played the game several times and know them in and out as a result. Most of the time when a new game comes out, all their skill and memorization all get thrown in the trash and they're about as good as the average player.

No, nevermind. False alarm. I found an improved bubble wand. Figured I could make a bubble bridge across. But no. Doesn't work. I still have to jump from bubble to bubble, and still hit my head on the spikes.

But it's interesting that suddenly I could reach the new bubble wand chest now, when I couldn't before. It appears the pile of skulls correlates to player death. Since I died so much trying to do the disk trick, the pile finally stacked high enough to reach the chest.
But then that means the chest below is only obtainable with little to no deaths. Since the pile of skulls blocks it when its too high. I wasn't good enough to get the lower chest, so I have no idea what's in it. Probably something really cool.

        Anonymous

Lower chest just has a bragging rights thing. Yes it's 0 death requirement.
Also you have been told straight up what you need to do in this thread. Ride the Frisbee. You don't need the bounce, it's finicky, but doable

          Anonymous

          >Ride the Frisbee.
Bullshit if true. I don't know how to get around the second corner. I have to get up and over without touching spikes. So essentially I have to jump off the disk, Immediately throw it higher, ensuring it bounces off the wall, then land on it again. Which I can actually pull off every 20th attempt. But the problem is that a single jump isn't enough elevation to get over the spikes, so I get hit and die anyway. I suspect I have to wall bounce it twice to clear the spikes. But that is just NOT going to happen. They're asking too much.

I was also told that it's optional content that's more optional than the normal post game content. So I'm leaving it for now to find the last 2 eggs I'm missing.

BTW, what's up with the clear colored tiles here and there? Have you noticed that the clear tiles are always blocking what would be convenient pathways, or blocking off areas in such a way as to make everything a little less convenient? It's like the developers going "teehee, we COULD have made this situations a lot more convenient for you, but you can see we purposely limited your space."

I just assumed that halfway through the game, I would get an ability to either delete the clear blocks, walk through them, or toggle their tangibility on and off. But that ability never came. It didn't come after beating the game. It didn't come after lighting all the candles. My next guess is that the ability is locked behind the eggs. But if you collect all 64 eggs, then you pretty much beat 99% of the game, right? What's the point of making travel more convenient, AFTER the player has no reason to travel the world anymore?

Starting from the ledge on the left, jump-ride the disc to the right wall and bounce off it then jump-ride a second time. Don't jump before you've hit the right wall.

You sure about that? That's the first thing I tried, and the disc on the second throw seems to outpace me. I mean, I could have just mistimed it. It's tough to gauge if you're doing something wrong or right, when you die 10 times between the "good" attempts.

You bounce on the wall, then jump and throw the disk at the apex, riding it again. It's finicky but can be done and you have a save point RIGHT THERE.
              Also yeah it's endgame stuff.
Also by clear block you mean glass I think? It's entire purpose is to let you see through

Sure, "glass", if that's how you want to think of it. Completely unbreakable, but clear like glass.

              >It's entire purpose is to let you see through
Not entirely no. Look more closely as its placement. Majority of the time it's not necessary. It's just extending a ledge a little farther than necessary. Or blocking a path that would make for a great shortcut. Like, i get blocking some paths while the player is still in the process of solving. But after shit is solved, just open up the space so the player can move unobstructed.

Alright, I got it. Juice wasn't worth the squeeze. That was my 3rd one of those, and only the first one gave me an achievement. So I'm not sure what they're for. Hopefully they'll accumulate to something good if I get all of them.

If I could give the developers advice, I would tell them that sometimes, *sometimes, you just have to show the players what to do. Like in Super Metroid, where shine sparking and wall jumping are demonstrated to the player by animals. So they know it's possible, and are able to practice it in a low stress environment.
Also, good rule of thumb: don't give player actions a mere 2 frame window for execution.

Which is understandable if you don't expect your game to sell like hotcakes. The only reason puzzles got solved fast is that there are literally thousands of people playing all the time.

Oh, I can guess what's coming next. I figured out the eggs all have symbols, under UV light. And that the symbols match the flute notes under UV light. So it must be some kind of Tunic-like code. I also found something called the incubator. So I'm guessing I'm going to need to incubate a major egg.

It's not impossible it's just such an insane pain in the ass that you'd have to spend months collecting all the pieces of the puzzle making a new save and getting a later-game item just to unlock it for each one and running the risk of getting duplicates.

Yes they meant collectively. A few you can get just by stumbling upon them if you're a thorough explorer or experiment with abilities. Some require some reasonable (and "reasonable") puzzling and clue collection. I got 8 or 9 of them by myself but ran out of leads, then decided to look up the rest and some of the rest required schizo logical leap bullshit that makes La-Mulana look tame. I was happy stopping where I did.

How do I actually get the pedometer? I found the tamagochi really late (50k+) so I'm wondering if I missed the actual item, since I've seen screenshots of it being in the hud.

In case you're still around, I think you need to have less than 10k steps. The counter wraps around after 99k so if you missed it you can come back periodically to check if it has overflowed yet.

You bounce on the wall, then jump and throw the disk at the apex, riding it again. It's finicky but can be done and you have a save point RIGHT THERE.

To me this feels like the actual solution, because the wheel is used for spikes elsewhere too and the bubble is for jumping higher, while the frisbee ride way is not needed anywhere else, so it's not a mechanic you find outside of luck i feel.

I can't believe i forgot to try the bubble though, i originally tried the wheel + frisbee, but that was not working for the first jump and even if it did, it couldn't have for the second. Good job.

it's always puzzles. but the main game is actual puzzles, whereas the post game is """puzzles""" aka find obscure glyph on one end of the map and use it somewhere else. which imo isn't a puzzle, it's just geocaching. there's almost nothing to "figure out", just shit to stumble across.

            [...]
It's mostly just raw exploration and secret hunting, I would say there's actually not much in the way of puzzles outside of some super dank endgame stuff.

It's pretty similar to ESA structurally yeah, however, it has no real combat, so instead the meat of the main gameplay revolves around single-screen puzzles and exploration of your abilities. It also has an additional intermediate stage with more global puzzles/exploration that is needed for 100%, before the wild post-post-game stuff that's purely optional content.

I see, smaller-scale puzzle focus from the start sounds cool enough

Oh boy a hidden bandaid fix for shit design. Great! Unfortunately the game is riddled with time wasting shit that has nothing to do with platforming well or solving puzzles, that was just one gripe. Other things that sucked I got around to in my ~70 minutes of playtime before I refunded: inconsistent behaviors of any npc that you need to manipulate to solve a puzzle, having to wait for goddamn bubble fish to reset the bubble ladder should you slip and fall, lack of indication you're about to be tossed back several goddamn screens in several instances, health meaning basically nothing, puzzles are all predicated on obfuscated information, shitty save point distribution, the game being a hellscape for colorblindness. I do think it's a pretty big flaw of the game that if you do miss an egg while exploring initially there's absolutely no way to figure out where it is other than by simply scouring the entire world again. the row that the missing egg is on on the shelf indicates which fifth of the world it's found in. horizontal positioning doesn't matter but if the missing egg is in the top row then you know that it's somewhere near the top of the world (if you were to cut the map into 5 horizontal strips it would be the top strip)

what the frick. I guess that's nice but also I feel like it's not useful in any way for a player, because unless you note down where you got each egg there's no way you'd realize they're correlated like that.

Hoping he'll put some of that toward another game and maybe hire a small staff so it doesn't take another 7 years. My dream is a Basso/Shouldice collab.

Honestly a shame how the ball and all of the other postgame items are underutilized, the game would have benefited enormously from a whole area where you need all of them. Like Void Stranger's best puzzles are in the areas where all of the "cheat" items are required, this game needed that.

one general tip i can give that helped me find a lot of stuff is really scour the map screen, anytime you see a gap between rooms, hunt around it to try find an entrance since the map is very dense there's not much empty space. look at the edges of rooms on the map for any gaps

          >45 eggs

you can use the disk to jump over. There is the wall just behind the 2 birds room so the disk would bounce back

guys I took the ghost dog's fake disc and made him chase me all the way past the bat to the circular recess pedestal but I couldn't insert the disc even after all that work. am I on the right track at all?

there is another item you have to get before you can take the real disk

Nono, I already put the fake disc in the dog statue and took the pink frisbee. but later I found a bat boss and past him a circular hole in a pedestal. so I took the fake disc, with BOTH discs in my inv now and he chased me all the way there to the pedestal but I couldn't interact with it

There's another shrine to put fake disk into but it straight up says so, you'll know when you see it, this circular hole needs another circular thing

          Anonymous

why the frick would they make the hole circular, I was OBVIOUSLY going to assume it needed the disc reeeeeeeeee. the only other pedestal is the M-shaped or diamond shaped one or some shit for the dog flame where I'm stuck, it's not that one right?

Just suicide and respawn 2 screens away, how is this a softlock.

          that's why it's not a hardlock

Yeah, I think I'm done with the game. While the tools are pretty creative the egg puzzle they are used in are braindead and almost never worth the effort it takes to find them. Also frick the dev for not putting a breakout block on the same screen where you find the bouncy ball.
