Any chance of a handheld PC thread here? Anyone have one? I'm tempted to look into this one myself, though the GPD win 4 is seducing me by being basically the successor to the PSP. Anything I should be wary of?

Nah. SteamOS has massive bloat, I don't want to be beholden to a storefront, and the deck isn't built for windows

Shit, I stand corrected. This is bloated as frick.

It's because steamOS (at least, not sure if other linux distros do it) installs a separate version of every instance of proton used in the compatdata folder. It's nowhere near that bad unless you install like 40+ games. If you're not silly with it, it's perfectly manageable. This pic is just from some moron who doesn't know how to delete things when he's done with them.

Shift+Delete. Steam will create the folder again when it needs it.

SteamOS fits comfortably into the 64GB storage capacity of the minimum spec Deck, but 64GB is the minimum requirement for Windows 11. Windows has similar caches of compiled shaders, and has a one-size-fits all compatibility layer, the OS just doesn't make you as aware of how much space those are taking up.
Of course, shader caching on Windows is also inferior to GNU/Linux based OSes which is part of why Windows sometimes has worse performance with performance hiccups when shaders have to constantly be recompiled.

windows shadercache folders are typically less than 1gb in size. Usually around 300-400mb. SteamOS comfortably fits there, if you don't plan on actually using the deck to play games.

                >windows shadercache folders are typically less than 1gb in size
Yes, that's what I was saying. Windows is shit at caching shaders and that's why it stutters in so many games GNU/Linux based OSes run buttery smooth.
If the storage capacity exists, why not use it to improve performance? This same kind of aversion to performance is why Windows lost the high performance computing market.

Most users are going to drop in a big SD card and symlink the shader cache directory on to it if they want to play bigger and more demanding titles.

Yet it's NOT better performance, is it? The shaders are no better or worse once they have been loaded in, which anyone who turns off the shadercache can attest to. You're actually moronic if you think anyone wants to give up 40gb or more in pursuit of a few seconds' convenience. Not to mention that windows manages to do this with just 400mb.

And not to mention this isn't even talking about the compatdata folder, which is the main culprit. You're trying to handwave what is likely to be 80GB+ of bloat with "uhh yeah but windows bad, haha"

                >which anyone who turns off the shadercache can attest to.
Tell that to Windows users struggling to run Elden Ring at launch while GNU/Linux based OSes were running circles around them on the same hardware.

That was a year ago now. And took 3 days to sort out. If this is all you have, I wonder why you are defending linux bloat of 80gb

That's not part of the OS, its a part of Steam. You have the same folder in Windows too. It increases as you play more games and it compiles more shaders.

why would you have compatdata in windows?

Win32 isn't the native API on Windows anymore. Everything you think of as a "Windows" game runs through a compatibility layer just like on GNU/Linux.
The only difference is Microsoft provides that layer and its obscured in the system directory instead of being included in Steam.

A lot of games on Steam even on Windows run through per-game compatibility layers which are even more bloat than the compatibility tools available on GNU/Linux which operate as a overlay filesystem where only the per-game unique files need to exist.
It makes me wonder how much of the 'compatdata' actually exists, and how much is the file system not being good at reporting the difference between actual files and the duplicate overlays that don't actually exist on the filesystem.

You're bloviating extra hard, but the fact remains that the windows folder on my home PC right now, with hundreds of games installed, is just shy of 30gb. My Steam Deck compatdata folder alone, with 32 games installed, is 59.6gb.

Why are you trying to spin this into a win for linux, unless you are some weird, blind cultist?

OP here. I have decided to get a deck instead. Can we talk about the valve Steam Deck instead? How's the emulation on this awesome device?

    Out of the loop here.
If I want a steam deck, do I buy the largest version? Or do I wait for V 2.0?

Confirmed by Valve, 2.0 won't have better performance, just better battery and maybe better screen. No release schedule for it in sight, might as well get the current model

IIRC you can easily replace internal storage with supported SSD drives, even on the cheapest 64gb NVMe product. Also SD cards don’t have that much of a detriment on performance, only a second or two of extra loading on Cyberpunk. If money’s tight, just go for the cheapest model.
All the V2 will do is have a better screen/battery for modern AAA games, but even the regular Deck is just fine IMO. Battery life is only a problem if you want to play recent, very demanding 3D AAA games.

If for some reason you don’t want a Steam Deck, a regular Loki might do you fine for the price, though the company that made them apparently has a massive backlog problem with shipping orders for their previous product, the Ayn Odin.
There’s also the Aya Neo Air Plus on the way, which seems to have similar performance with the regular Air for a fraction of the price. Granted you lose out on the OLED screen.

Playing 3D games doesn't make any sense on such a small screen. It not only ruins the immersion, it just hurt eyes. the device is fricking overpowered, they must put only 4 e cuck cores with a power limit of 5w

I’ve had my deck (256gb) for about a week no. I like it. Been playing Elden ring and river city girls that I pirated 🙂
