Not exactly the mood I was going for tbqh anon. You know the feeling of a bad breakup where you guys are perfect for each other but there's something you two can't get over (running over a man last summer and digging his body in the woods) so you seperate forever?

It's not really that character driven. It does fit the tone though but I do want that kinda feeling where you fricked up your job. Rent is nearly due. You can't afford food. Your landlord is knocking at your door. You're just so tired.... Nobody seems to care for you and anyone who does you just shove them away.

I don't recall Sanitarium being particularly depressing apart from creepy environments. IIRC wasn't it all a dream?

A little more character driven. You're on the right tone though. tbh I don't even mind anime/manga/movie recs too.

I wouldn't call black souls depressing though tbh.

Really really. It has perfect bad breakup vibes, if you can face the fear. I can’t spoil it for you, but it has a lot going on from a story perspective.

          Omori, I guess

Sorta. I still think the dream world sequence are really fricking stupid. I get why it's there and yeah it's "LE escapism" but there's barely any themes or corherance to the main plot. Le troony boyfriend trying to rescue the girl xD

              Hey I'm just asking.

Self pity is something you're supposed to grow past, not wallow in. Anyone who wastes time on this depressioncore crap is really immature and needs to stop stagnating.

Blah blah blah. Our brains are wired fricking weird. Sometimes you really want to just watch / play / read some misery porn. You're not depressed or anything but you just want to feel that weakness.

Are you asking for more denpa games like your pic?

If you know moon runes, then the VN you posted, For Elise, qualifies.

Not really but I can dig it. Surprised there hasn't been that much denpa stuff in general like at all in the west or the east. I've only watched a machine translation of Fur Elise. Did MC go crazy and kill the high school girl for scamming him and his coworker crush?

There are elements of denpa in a bunch of popular stuff like Lain, Yume Nikki, Eva, Higurashi, and so on, but purely denpa works like the big three denpa VNs have always been the realm of niche hobbyists. On one hand, I wish there was more but on the other, I kinda like that it's not oversaturated and what few titles that are out there are all pretty unique.

Check out Utsuo no Koi (鬱夫の恋). An RPGMaker game apparently made by a guy who then killed himself, loosely based on his own life and love experiences. The creator's "suicide note" is still up on Archive somewhere and it features your typical Japanese trauma stuff - Bullying, rape, becoming a shut-in etc. No idea if it's real or not, and it's gone mercifully unnoticed and untranslated by western morons all this time.

Towelket 2 and Fury are similarly depressing vent games but made by some schizo Japanese woman, allegedly.

Speaking of RPGMaker games, Seraphic Blue is pretty bleak from beginning to end.

I was gonna mention that I honestly couldn't think of any Western examples other than maybe some psychological horror films that have the same kind of feel and literally who-tier OELVNs. I guess DDLC counts as denpa.

mentioned but with a much larger scope and game length. It also touches on subjects like anti-natalism which I just haven't seen other games do at all. The combat's also pretty unique and basic random encounters can wipe your party if you don't know what you're doing.

I have no idea, I read the human-made Spanish translation by reverse-engineering my Portuguese. And yeah that video kind of sucks. "Erm it has a bad ending for it's schizo protagonist and that's le bad because it implies that all people like that are crazy and unfixable!". Bringing this homosexual tumblr shit to a 20 year old game is just unforgivable in my eyes. I actually much prefer something like that to Subahibi where it just hits you with an unironic "Live laugh love and be happy!" after 50 hours of torture and dog rape and whatever the frick.

I like subahibi if you consider its more as a sequel to sora no tsui. It's an author going back to his work and going "yeah you know what frick this. stop punishing yourself over shit you can't fix. Move forward". But man come on the only person who made a video on it and not even a WordPress and it's a fricking troony groan

Oh... I can't read. Frick that sounds interesting though. Honestly I liked Japanese depression core but I swear the whole bullying and rape subplots are so played out. It's getting stupid. I swear the Japanese are mindbroken over that Junko incident and now every writer has to at leays make a backstory as fricked up as that one.
