Any pro tips on how to experience Lara's games?

Any pro tips on how to experience Lara's games? I wanna get into the series and play at least the original pre-legend games but there are like 10 different ways to play them. Should I use OpenTomb? Or other open source ports? Patch the original version? Maybe emulate? I have no idea. Any notable differences between all these versions? I use GNU/Linux btw so no suggestions that only work on windows, thank you.

Gog and/or emulate (ie Duckstation) as necessary.

      Full experience: Play 1-5
      Essential: Play 1-4
I'm a massive coomer for Lara: play 1-8

        >Essential: Play 1-4

        For 'essential' I'd say only 1, 4

2 and 3 are weaker than the first game, full of bullshit, and braindead human enemies who are immersion-breakingly stupid.

4 takes all the improvements in 2 and 3 AND remembers what made the first game good.

Nta, but I'd argue you better appreciate 4 if you play 2 & 3 beforehand.

PS1 versions, in order games 1 to 4. If you loved them, play 5 also. Skip everything after.
PC versions have missing audio here and there, worse or entirely missing lighting/darkness effects, and are changed in ways that make them way easier than intended, which makes them less satisfying. That is, in TR1 and 3 you can only save by finding Save Crystals, which are usually hidden in secret and dangerous to get to areas. This really makes those two games tense but incredibly satisfying and rewarding every time you survive up to the next Save Crystal. On PC you can save anywhere, but not only that, the Save Crystals are still there only they heal your HP by a lot. So not only is there zero risk in making mistakes when platforming because you can just savescum, but there are 2-3 times more total heals in the game than intended and than what the game was balanced around.

    The PC versions suck.

To specify further, if you have a PS1 and a CRT, play that way. Otherwise emulate on Duckstation, but please if you have any self worth, do not use save states. Save the way the developers intended. You are otherwise just reducing the experience and not really beating the game.

What about Dreamcast versions? I hear 4-5 have dynamic shadows that even pc version is missing?

          Anonymous

Yeah the Dreamcast versions of 4 and 5 (only ones it has I think?) look amazing too. Better than the PS1 versions.
Personally I love the PS1 versions the most because underwater sections look most amazing on them. It's actually dark and creepy underwater, and you see these constantly moving and shifting shadows and patches of light caused by waves on the surface reflecting sunlight.
On Dreamcast its noticeably lighter underwater, and on PC its basically perfectly lit up, completely removing the claustrophobic horror atmosphere of the diving sections. The diving sections on PS1 are some of the most anxious I've ever felt in videogames, and also most satisfied I've felt when surviving them.
The darkness and shadows in general are the most effective on the PS1 versions and this enhances horror atmosphere in sections that have it, a lot. There can be moments where you are in a pitch black corridoor with just a flickering light and monsters suddenly sprinting at you, and you only see them each time the light flickers, each time closer to you. On PC you just see them from afar and it feels like an action sequence more than a horror one, as the hallway will be perfectly lit up like there are magical invisible lamps everywhere.

Absolutely. To add to it, emulate the PS1 version on Bleemcast on a CRT for the most authentic experience, possibly using a gamepad emulating keyboard inputs. Also make sure to 1CC all the games, otherwise you never beat them.
Whatever you do, avoid to play the patched PC versions on PC. They run and play well at high resolutions, which is NOT what the developers intended.

Dont listen to these mutts. Its PC that has fricked up saves. Save Crystals on PS1 GREATLY improve the Tomb Raider experience. You actually have consequences to making mistakes. And these games are tuned to perfection in the platforming, if you fall it was your mistake 100% of the time.

Never OpenLara. It's a dreadful attempt to recreate the game physics by feel instead of a real attempt to decompile and recreate the real ones. This leads to many instances of jumps being harder than they should be, grabs that don't grab, head bonks that frick up the flow that wouldn't happen on real hardware, enemy AI that is alternately moronic or unstoppably invincible... They've had years to do something about it but they have no intention, preferring instead just to keep polishing the turd instead of ripping out the bodge and replacing it like they should.

Based and correct choice. I personally use the automated fix, but I understand not wanting to use xpadder for the controller.

Another thing to note is that on magipack.games you can get pre-bundled packages which basically have all the tweaks already installed. TR3 especially is a complete b***h to get working at high res with alt-tabbing (etc) but this comes with DGvoodoo pro-configured and stuff. I think it has the expansion packs too, which are a b***h to find otherwise.

        >magipack.games you can get pre-bundled packages
Seems like a cool site. Do they do installers? I wish someone did repacks that were just folders of games without any installation.

        >DGvoodoo pro-configured and stuff
I don't necessarily need this because on linux the game will be wrapped from whatever it was to opengl anyway, I'm shielded from at least some of the issues. Though I have used dgvoodoo in the past and the idea of game going dx6 - dx11 - vulkan still sounds a bit weird to me (though I haven't noticed any latency in doing that).

          Anonymous

It has an installer, but from what I can tell it's more of an unzipper than anything else. Perhaps there are some games in there which won't run at all without registry entries, but I would imagine that once you run the installer, you can safely transplant most of them to another PC and it'll still work.
It sounds like you know significantly more than me about the DX stuff so I think you'll be fine either way. I took one look at DGvoodoo and the sheer amount of trial and error I'd need to configure it myself made me give up and use the repacks.

Game's features tons of backtracking and those crystals are one time use. It just makes you waste tons of time for no reason. Unironically feels it was added to help rentals make more money because people would lose tons of progress and would have to rent it for longer (and the game itself would feel longer).

No anon, why would you think that. It was an advanced metaplayer invention by the developers (who intended it) to make you understand the importance of the relationship between humans and controllers, and a subtle critique of the digital world as a mere simulacrum of our real realities.

Fricking stop it with thinking rentals were at the center of everything.

Did Crash Bandicoot also have the save system it had because of rentals?!

You have to put things back into their context. Saving on console, for anything that wasn't an RPG (which was still quite rare in the west), was a relatively new concept. Devs were still figuring it out, figuring out how to implement it and how to balance it, there was no standard, and at the time nobody would have thought letting the player save anywhere he wants any time was a good idea, that was only good for savescumming Doom-like players on PC.

                Anonymous

Isn't it because the consoles didn't have enough space? Since space was no longer an issue, you had games autosaving every step you took.

TR2 had unlimited saves on consoles

                Anonymous

A 1989 Gameboy RPG let you save anywhere, it's not because of console hardware. Games that weren't RPGs either didn't have saves or had points where you could for balance reasons. Video Game devs obviously didn't want people to save scum through the levels.

By 5th generation there was plenty of saving mechanics that were experimented upon. With Mario 64 you had the option to save the game after you gained a star. In Crash I believe you needed to collect three icons to be allowed to be warped to a save area, and it wasn't present on every level (if I remember correctly). Tomb Raider had end of level saves and one time usage save crystals you can find on the ground. In One you saved after you beat a level. In the Donkey Kong Country games you need to spend coins to save. In SaGa Frontier you can save on any map at will. Then with a lot of retro FPS games you can save when ever.

                Anonymous

Saving had become a standard in arcades and pc at that time. Developers weren't against the idea of saves, but they didn't have the space.

PCgays are straight up mentally moronic, good lord. They put that save system in because it makes the game better. It makes you have to actually learn instead of save scumming every jump in the game. It gives consequences to bad playing.

                Anonymous

Your cope would make sense if all TR games and their versions were like this. They put in PS1 version but removed it on pc. Then they didn't add save crystals to 2, then they added them back in a different way in TR3 (but not on pc) then they didn't add it in 4 and 5 at all on all platforms. It's the same people who did all of this. Therefore, even the devs felt conflicted about it, seeing as it never returned in the way it was in TR1

The only game for which I'd really recommend emulating the console release is Angel of Darkness because the controls are so much better. The graphics are also actually broken on PC and I'm not just talking about some minor differences in lighting, but I think there are fanmade patches that address most if not all of those issues.

They are, but I'm on vacations, so I'm not going to repost them for the n-th time. They aren't exactly "new" (they were made short after Underworld premiered), but they do work on modern hardware without an issue and were made with support for 64bit OS in mind.

Production order. The console releases are superior to the pc, but the pc titles had expansion packs. So I would say play them via emulation then go back and play the expansions on PC. If you really want to get in-depth there's also the level editor and fan made levels/games.

The first 4 Tomb Raider games have 'gold editions' for the PC. 'Gold Edition' PC games are generally top sellers that would get a second publishing with additional content and patch updates. Usually at a cheaper price. Tomb Raider 1 was a big hit on the PC. But was limited to DOS and Windows 95/98. Tomb Raider 2, 3, and 4 for the PC are windows native and support Direct 3D, The first few Tomb Raider games on PC were big enough sellers to warrant Gold editions.

I know someone who once had the Final Fantasy VII PC box. That person loaned it to me and I could never get it to run on my machine. The sound would skip like crazy.

I just finished Tomb Raider Legend and it was one of the worst PC ports I have seen in a long time, you can choose between 6th or next gen version but the next gen one is broken with lots flickering and graphical glitches, 6th gen version is much more stable but there are still some glitches. And the controller support is broken too.
Anniversary and Underworld were fine though.

I don't know what alternative dimension I've just phase shifted into, Cistern is arguably the worst level in TR1 and one of the bottom 10 levels of the original trilogy. It has the most blandest grey walls everywhere design and is really boring to just go back and forth lowering/rising water until you brute force your way through. Lost Valley is by far the most memorable and made Tomb Raider along with Palace Midas and Sanctuary of the Scion

    >Maybe emulate?
I personally emulate PS1 because I can't be arsed remapping the kbm controls to controller.

Using retroarch duckstation core. You get quick saves so it bypasses the issues with TR3 PS1 limited save system. PGXP (removing PS1 wobbliness), resolution upscaling and shaders and other settings can make lower res visuals much better, maybe not PC tier but about on par with the Dreamcast ports.

I found out this weird thing about the Retroarch cores, where if you put Retroarch settings to 21:9, but the emulator core itself in 16:9 with widescreen hack enabled, the camera will be zoomed out in 21:9, with some black bars at top/bottom. I haven't found a way to make the game look zoomed out this way, without the black bars. You lose some screen real estate but imo it feels much more satisfying to play. Even in 16:9, the camera feels claustrophobic.

Is something like this doable on PC?

As for notable versions differences, it's rather convoluted, but iirc believe TR1 and 2 are better on PC (especially with OpenLara etc), BUT with TR3 the devs made PS1 their primary versions and they have more atmospheric lightning. I don't know if there's a way to apply PS1 lighting to PC TR3. TR4 versions are even more convoluted because there's the Dreamcast version. Some autists will also argue about TR1 PS1 vs Saturn differences.

If you're gonna emulate PS1 and want to be a completionist, there are ports of the PC Gold add-ons:

I have a Steam Deck, which is Linux based, and I have Tomb1Main running great on there. Granted, I actually set it up on PC and transferred the folder over, but simply dragging the contents into the Steam TR1 folder (removing everything in there by default) and renaming Tomb1Main’s exe to dosbox.exe has the game working perfectly. Unfinished Business also works by creating a shortcut/link, adding that to Steam, and adding the “-gold” launch option.

Frick it, I’ll just talk about getting these running on Steam Deck.

As for the other games, all of which were also set up on Windows and transferred after the fact, I have TR2Main for TR2, and while it works, it has strange stuttering performance issues that I don’t know how to fix. It’s likely playable, but it’s annoying nonetheless. Golden Mask also works similarly to how Unfinished Business does. For TR3, I used the Arsunt patch and the No Green Crystal patch and it works perfectly fine. Couldn’t get Lost Artifact working at all, though. For TR4 and 5, I just used the widescreen patches and the tomb4/tomb5 projects and they worked perfectly, though you need to run them windowed to see FMVs. Couldn’t get those Peixoto patches to work on Windows, so I wasn’t going to bother trying on Linux.

As for AoD, I followed some long-ass patching guide you can find by searching “best settings for Angel of Darkness” or something, which adds patches, bug fixes, improved FMV, widescreen support, control fixes, and other bullshit, and transferred it over. For the life of me, I couldn’t get FMV to work while using widescreen and high resolutions (you can still hear them, you just can’t see them), regardless of Proton versions, and trying to force windowed mode only fricked up the config, rendering most graphical patches moot. Even opening the Launcher options is enough to wipe your config so you have to redo that shit every time. It’s a pain in the ass.

          >I have TR2Main for TR2, and while it works, it has strange stuttering performance issues that I don’t know how to fix.
Weird, I used TR2Main in TR2 playthrough I just did and had 0 issues. Did you use the latest dev version? Because that one seems to be very buggy (crashes for me on death) so I played with the latest released version from 2019 and it was pretty much perfect.

          >Couldn’t get Lost Artifact working at all,
Me too, it fails with a weird error so I'm planning to wait a few months before playing TR3 so it might just resolve itself with newer linux software.

Btw, since you have a steamdeck, check out lutris.net, there are scripts that install these games automagically and pretty much just work (though I only tried all up to TR4).

            >Did you use the latest dev version?
No clue. I think I just grabbed the first thing I saw on GitHub.

            >Me too, it fails with a weird error
For me, as I added it through Steam, it just shows that the game starts to run and, within seconds, silently stops running. No indicators of what went wrong. Not even an error message. Changing Proton versions didn’t help either.

            >check out lutris.net
I’ve already installed Lutris (though I did it after adding all these TR games), and it barely seems to work at all for me. The only thing I managed to successfully add was StarCraft Remastered. Everything else I’ve tried, such as the classic Resident Evil’s 1-3 or THUG Pro, have just given me random errors or hang at specific points in the installation process, usually before it even starts installing the games themselves. No idea what’s going wrong with it.

              > it just shows that the game starts to run and, within seconds, silently stops running
yeah, it's the same for me, I think the error is some memory exception thing. It's not very clear what causes it so I'm hoping it will get somehow fixed in the future wine versions (might be a good idea to try some old version to see if it works).

              >and it barely seems to work at all for me
Install scripts can be hit or miss but there are some amazing ones like for TR games (gog versions).

In regards to TR2Main on your Steam Deck, do the FMVs work for you? It's so hard and filled with bullshit like the helicopter and those two cyborgs you you can't hurt with bullets but have to kill somehow to get parts of the key, not to mention that sometimes their AI bugs out so they can't follow you and if you use too much ammo you end up soft locking yourself and have to start again.

I could have told you how NOT to play it. A recent thread on Ganker also got my interest up to play the classics again. I've had 1-5 sitting in my Steam library for while, so I figured this was the right time to test them out. TL;DR: PC version is utter shit. You can try Automated Fix but then you forgo an easy solution to use your gamepad. You can go the other route and use nGlide Config + a ready to use Dosbox input file to get your X360 pad to work. If you use something else like me, you might have to do some more frickery. Took me like 4 or 5 reinstalls/game restarts to set everything up and my experience is STILL subpar.
The setup thing is just part of the problem. With all the suggested fixes I found online I still have issues with the PC version. First of all the water and lighting issues. The best tip I got to use a gamma value of 0.7 in the nGlide configurator... It did darken some areas but the lighting color is still off. Blue soulless water in favor of the soulful green water from the original. Sound issues: I have to set my SFX Slider to 2/10 and Music to 1/10 to have reasonable levels. More problems: These sliders don't apply to ambience sound, so the loud-ass wind_sfx.ogg keeps looping at maximum volume. Adds another dimension of stress and tenseness to the playthrough. Pushes me to the edge each time, hence why I can not do sessions longer than 30 to 60 minutes on this. Lastly, graphical issues: I've tried vanilla, automated fix, manual fixes, and this is what I ended up with, after so much frickery and game crashes: wire-frame effects around the fire sprites when you shoot your weapons. First, I thought, ah it's not that bad. But then you progress and realize that enemies, Lara, certain blocks also get a white wire-frame outline added to them where there obviously should be NONE.
With all that in mind, I should have emulated on Duckstation, no doubt about it. But seeing as there are also open source projects.. maybe those are EVEN better.

      >PC version is utter shit.
OP here. I used Tomb1Main for TR1 and it just works with gamepad and zero issues (I've finished the first game and expansion). Then I discovered than someone have made a set of scripts for gnu/linux to easily setup literally every other game in the series with every fix downloaded automagically. There's also exclusive PC content for every game from 1 to 4 so I'd feel like I'm missing out if I didn't play it (it's like 16 extra levels, basically a whole extra game). Also PS1 versions have really shitty sound quality (I might have ended up emulating too if it wasn't for that). On microsoft windblows there are repacks with all fixes installed already for justworks experience, someone linked them earlier in this thread (magipack.games site)

Ah okay. I don't use Lutris. Maybe I'll install it sometime.
Personally I'd rather just manage my own Wine shit, or run a simple Bash script that gives me more insight into exactly what it's doing, though. In other words, Lutris is a little too "let me do that for you" for my tastes.

You can just look at the scripts to see what exactly it is installing and downloading and what it does. It's pretty transparent. Lutris is GOAT tbh, it makes all boring shit very quick and easy to do, like swtiching between wine versions, enabling antimicrox profiles (since TR don't work with gamepad without it), easily set up DPI for you monitor without running tiny ass winecfg that you can't see on your 1440p/4k monitor.

              >too "let me do that for you"
But that's what computers are made for, automating the tedious stuff. I do agree with you somewhat, since a lot of times the Lutris install scripts might be outdated.
I like to use the flatpak wine Bottles. It provides a little sandboxing at least for some of that dodgy software and you can easily manage your wine prefixes without littering /usr/ with shitty 32-bit libs.

              >Maybe emulate?
I personally emulate PS1 because I can't be arsed remapping the kbm controls to controller.

Lutris does sandboxing as well, there's an option to not let the wine apps access your home folder. Also Bottles looks like ass outside of Gn*me.

Also I finished TR2 and temple of xian was the best level in the game and better than anything in TR1. Let's see if the expansion pack is any good.

The first 2 levels of The Golden Mask are alright but it's Furnace of the Gods and Kingdom that are excellent and makes the expansion worth playing.

To be fair I played in low res mode. If you crank up the resolution then you can spot secrets from a mile away. On default res + crt mode you can barely see shit. I swam around in the underwater maze for 10 minutes before noticing a switch in plain sight

Cistern is probably the only 'water level' in a video game that doesn't suck.

why? its more satisfying than a shitty cache of items that you don't really need

        Anonymous

I already said why. I mostly find 2 out of 3 which means all I don't get anything and my time is effectively wasted on looking. If they gave smaller rewards for finding 1 or 2 then it would've been better.

These frickers are here to tempt you. Do you really want 2 shotgun shells if you have to risk getting meleed by this fricker when he wakes up? (I swear a pickup is supposed to be 4 or 6 shells, but on this level theyre all 2)

I ended up getting 57 fricking pickups in this level, see , and by the end I just got so bored of picking shit up that I just ignored things. It reminded me of one of those shitty gathering games like minecraft or terraria. Pickups lose their appeal if the devs put a billion items in the level

This right here is the path to the end of the level. Normally you pass by this at the start of the level, then go alllll around through a billion doors then finally end up on this pillar, then you take a running jump and dunk yourself into that hole which takes you to the end of the level.

I've read somewhere that at least the NTSC version of TR1 is preferable over PAL. The others shouldn't make too much of a difference. From what I gathered the only PAL version of a PSX game worth playing is that of Wipeout 3 Special Edition.

      >Guess we'll never find out.

N-Gage version is the best one.

The PS1 versions are consistent all the way up to 5. They are the easiest to play. The first PC port is fine. But runs in DOS. It does support various different graphics API's. Tomb Raider 2 and 3 were made for Windows 95/9x, and may have some issues. Though perhaps compatibility modes might work? Tomb Raider The Last Revelation and Chronicles are Windows XP games. The PC ports do have 'gold editions' with extra levels, as seen above. Those last two games, also were ported to the Dreamcast via WindowsCE.
