No, they patched the Steam version recently so just go from there. GOG copies have always worked. Some people like the DX11 version but i would say it isn't necessary - just an extra for those who loved it and want to revisit it.

Never used it so i can't comment on it. Only used community packs for Gothic 1 because that and the 60 FPS patch are sorta required nowadays. Otherwise its hard to go back to it.

No mods needed for your 1st run.
Don't go into a hybrid build - it'll be shit. Pick pure STR/DEX/Mana+magic and stick to it.
Learning enemy attack patterns, what can be dodged and what can't is crucial in this game.
NEVER underestimate the range of your weapon - it's worth to sacrifice 10-15dmg for something bigger reach. That way you can strike your foe before they hit you.
Harad/Bosper are the most optimal masters to study under.
Collect and never sell those small mushrooms, the black ones. Eating like 30 or 40 of them will perma boost your Mana and it stacks.
Same thing with apples but it's HP instead.

A properly executed hybrid build is more powerful than meme "pure" builds.

Telling him to to go pure str/dex/magic IS autismo min-max mode two times out of three. It's perfectly fine to make a mixed build and it's way more fun than a pure build.

            Anonymous

How'd you go into making a proper hybrid build then? You can't use both bows and crossbows or str/dex weapons.
I guess a battle mage (more battle than mage) with summoning magic would be good since summons are busted.

              The easiest one is archer-mage.
              >Play the game as pure-ish dex, but join the monastery
              >Invest the bare minimum in magic, except maybe some mana early on
              >Drink all your dex pots at the end of chapter 1, coast through Jarkendar and chapter 2 killing everything
              >Grab healing, light etc. runes from Jarkendar
              >Learn iceblock in chapter 3, coast all the way to chapter 5 with an occasional golem or rain of fire scroll, learn thunder from water mages if you want a weaker rain of fire before chapter 5
              >Learn rain of fire and hit 150 mana if you didn't get that far from bonuses, now you can murder 90% of things in the game and finish off stragglers with your bow

that's cope, you might use that 100 dex spear sword to save arrows on low tier enemy in midgame (or scepter as mage to save mana) but the bow /crossbow is still the most op and still outperform any atempts to do hybrid

        The easiest one is archer-mage.
        >Play the game as pure-ish dex, but join the monastery
        >Invest the bare minimum in magic, except maybe some mana early on

mage is strongest late in non raven dlc version, in raven dlc its the hardest and the weakest
the strongest thing is pure bow or pure crosbow (you can still used 2 hand weapon with crosbow even if you do not invest at all in 2hand)
in raven dlc even if you max mana you can cast tier 6 death spell 2 times to kil 1 orc and you out of mana, defensless and need to run away and drink potion and do it again ... much fun

Anything I should know before play this? Any mandatory mod?

first time play normal with no raven dlc,
once you play thru game and learn where items and scrols are you can get raven dlc
get stats to 29 , then buy 5 points to save skillpoints,

I did a pure bow run. Except for brief episodes with the dex sword and chapters 5-6, it's torture all the way through where you hoard your dex pots forever and always have to choose between having enough dex to even damage your opponent or having enough bow skill to aim further than right in front of you.
          >in raven dlc even if you max mana you can cast tier 6 death spell 2 times to kil 1 orc and you out of mana, defensless and need to run away and drink potion and do it again ... much fun
This is exactly why I recommend NOT doing a pure build, moron. The mage build is there so that you can rain-of-fire those 10+ orc groups that would whoop your archer ass if you didn't abuse level geometry, then finish off the wounded elites with arrows.

You did something wrong then because I tried all pure builds and bow is the most OP thing in the game BY FAR.
You become a killing machine as early as start of Act 3 and nothing can stop you. It's just insane how powerful bows are.

Not unless you drink all your potions by chapter 2, and no "pure build" autist would ever do that.

I don't remember going out of my way to acquire any additional pots. And by that time you get like what, 3-4 pots total? Barely does anything in Act 3.

I don't know what kind of game you played then. I recall having to kite whenever I aggroed more than 1 lizard guy in chapter 4 with the pure dex build. Not what I'd call the "most OP" build, since if I put a bit into magic I'd have iceblock to help me out.

                >I recall having to kite whenever I aggroed more than 1 lizard guy in chapter 4 with the pure dex build
Yeah, not my experience at all. I remember shitting on Shadowbeasts in Act 3 with my archer build. Out of 3 pure builds, it was the strongest BY FAR. Tho I do agree Iceblock would probably help a lot, even if I never tried it myself.

Why are all you homosexuals telling me to play 1 first?

                >Why are you telling me to play the narrative prequel first?

Not really. They're managable for warriors (Claw of Beliar doesn't count) since they take 50% of your HP if you get hit and have good resistances so it takes a while to down one.
Mages have it easier since you can just spam Skelly Gobbos and those are super busted against anything that's not a mage. You're still restricted by that shitty mana system tho.
I said the archer is the strongest by far because it's just brainless "point" and clicking and running out of arrows is never an issue.

Pure dex-builds are just vastly inferior to one-handed strength-builds.

You need to eat 50 dark mushrooms to gain 5 mana points. You can also eat 25 apples for 1 point of strength. Some npcs do an animation in which they take a bite from the apple, you can continuously beat them up, pick their apple and wait for them to start eating the apple again.

Play the first part if you haven't.
Strength increases melee damage, dexterity increases ranged damage, there are no exceptions.
There are stat milestones that increase the skill point cost of increasing them, which means you should save your permanent potions for late game(when 1 stat point requires 4 skill points). You should also avoid getting permament stat boosts from plants, because you can turn them into potions with alchemy.
Your attacks will only deal 10% of damage, you need crits to deal full damage to enemies. You can increase the crit chance by raising your weapon proficiency.
Levelling up while being transformed into an animal will not increase your HP, so you should avoid using it.
You can use https://github.com/Franisz/zUtilities with union for QoL stuff.
Once you're done with it, play archolos.

Played both games for the first time in january, and the steam version worked fine without any mods. Had a crash like once or twice throughout the whole thing, but that's it.
Went with a STR build, using one handed sword and it felt great, was able to finish it without much hassle. Two handed swords felt less fluid and satisfying doing combos.

If the teaser is anything to go by the problem is that it's not Gothic, at all.

It's not out yet, we only got a small teaser that got (supposedly) completely scrapped because people didn't really like it. Here's my impressions:
      >awful, truly awful protag retouches - dude never shuts up and is constantly quipping
      >seriously, if you thought some of the modern AAA protags talk and talk and talk, this is nothing compared to Gothic Remake (Teaser)
      >game's ugly as frick, trash lighting
      >smartphone UI
      >very janky (but interesting) combat system, could be good if improved
      >moronic bombastic intro a la Uncharted
This was like the first 45 mins because I didn't really feel like pressing on.

I don't think it was that bad. Sure, the writing was a joke and the graphics were bareable once you turn off most of the options. But the combat was fresh (it just needed an AI to give it meaning) and the quest design is ahead of the modern counterparts (not like the standard is any high). I think it had potential.

Crits are fricking broken, I MEAN FRICKING BROKEN. If you ever want to fight a human, skeleton or orc you need something like 250+ Hp and mid tier armor. Even then expect to die because random npcs have 200 strength and high crit rate (Bromar holds a dagger and does ridiculous damage )
The game is almost perfect but the crit system ruins everything

      Anonymous

Kinda depends on the NPC you're fighting but yeah, some of them have ridiculous stats to make up for the lacking AI.
You can knock out most NPCs in the harbor district for some easy xp for example.

      Anonymous

Think of it this way: your character is a fricking malnourished hobo during act 1 and some of act 2. Other NPCs, while not necessarily fighters, slave away on farms or work as bodyguards or something.
By late act 2/early act 3, you should see a massive difference in fighting NPCs. Skeletons can still be a b***h tho, they're really fkn strong.
