>Ape Escape 1 was one of my childhood games >played Ape Escape 3 so many goddamn times I've milked every last drop of fun an human being could possibly derive from it >yet only played Ape Escape 2 once, literally only remember the cool gacha machine + minigames and Red Monkey fucking slamming a T-Rex on its head
Is it worth another playthrough? And yes, I'm aware the music is a massive downgrade compared to the two other games.
>miyoo mini costs like $60 and can play PS1 games >cannot play Ape Escape due to lacking analogs >chinky handheld that has the power to play it and has analogs is closer to $150
The fat PS2 had a PS1 CPU built in it, but the PS2 slim didn't, so the slim model actually emulates PS1 games. Some PS1 games actually performed better on a slim, some worse, and some didn't play at all.
>Oh that's bizarre.
Well they had to get rid of something to make the console so much smaller. >I'd rather get a PS3 then. It plays PS1 and PS2 games natively if you get the launch version, and has a HDMI output.
A good option if you have an NTSC copy of Ape Escape 1, but the PAL version doesn't work on a PS3 because the game has some weird copy-protection.

That's very bizarre. Are there any other games that don't work on the PS3?
Pal version is the best version, so that's a bummer.

>Are there any other games that don't work on the PS3?
Yeah. Here's a list detailing PS1 game compatibility with the PS3:
https://www.psdevwiki.com/ps3/PS1_Classics_Emulator_Compatibility_List
Notice that Ape Escape's PAL-EU version is listed as "LibCrypt protected", which means it doesn't work on a PS3. I found out all about it a decade ago when I tried to play my copy of Ape Escape on a PS3.

And is this just for launch PS3's?
I'm asking because I'm looking to get one myself to play my PS1/PS2 discs. I figured a launch PS3 is the best option because I don't have a CD/DVD/Blueray player either, and you can get a PS3 for less than £50. But if you have a better suggestion I'm all ears. I've only been looking into this for a few days.

It's for all PS3s. Pretty sure all PS3 models play PS1 games the same way.

Neat, I thought it might be different, seeing how only launch models can play PS2 games from disc.

>PS1/PS2 discs
Really the best option is to just get a PS2. I have a slim and it plays all PS1 games which I own, including Ape Escape.
Here's a list of PS1 games that have issues on PS2:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_PlayStation_games_incompatible_with_PlayStation_2
The list also details problems on specific PS2 models.
The original PS3 model is a good option if you really want a Blu-Ray player and can deal with it not playing a certain games.
Neat, I thought it might be different, seeing how only launch models can play PS2 games from disc.
That's because the PS3 launch model had built-in PS2 chips, while the PS1 games are just emulated.

I'd prefer a PS3. The only thing turning me off is the software emulation for PS1 games. But if it's accurate I don't care

The PS3's PS1 emulation is pretty great for the vast majority of titles. Overall probably even better than the PS2 slim's. Just a shame about the games the PS3 can't play at all.

What can't it play at all? I was looking through the list and it seems like everything that it couldn't play has some sort of patch, like Ape Escape.
What games did you have in mind?

Well it's not much of an issue if you go through the trouble of installing custom patches.

Why wouldn't I do that, it's the obviously correct thing to do.
So is there anything I can't play that you think I should be aware of?

I had no idea there were so many by this point. >So is there anything I can't play that you think I should be aware of?
Dunno, I'm not familiar with every single game and whether they have fan patches.

Sure, but it's fixable.

i won't get into the weeds with this but most known YLOD fixes only work on accident because of the heat (which only works temporally)
the only real fix is to completely replace the RSX chip with a newer model that doesn't have the issue

My point is I already know and you don't need to keep explaining it. But thanks
My decade old previous phone could emulate PS1 games, my current one can emulate PS2 ones for christ's sake. Why bother with some overpriced separate gadget?
You can use a dualshock or any other regular controller with phones too no problem nowadays.
>caught 2 apes at once by some miracle >game didn't crash or anything despite it being 1 ape over the first time quota
good times with this game but holy fuck that boss fight at the end...
Trick Castle filtered me for a good while as a kid. I struggled with the suit of armor blocking the door a little and proceeded to assume it was invincible, or that I needed to come back with a later gadget like with the flashing walls. I'd roam the level aimlessly for hours trying to figure out where to go. At least the level theme was a banger.
I didn't have a memory card so every time I played Ape Escape I played it all the way from the beginning
A few times I got all the way to the final boss but my tiny brain couldn't figure it out and I always quit at that point
That was a long long time ago and I regret not beating the game to this day
I wasn't ready for that nostalgia to hit so hard...
Interesting ergonomics on her keyboard there

Yeah, the gameplay still holds up. One of the best PS2 platformers.

Not all of them. I have a Mini+ and a few of them the fucker just refuses to start.
just get a ps2 slim and emul8
Why would you need to emulate if it's running on a PS2? Doesn't that run PS1 games natively?
The fat PS2 had a PS1 CPU built in it, but the PS2 slim didn't, so the slim model actually emulates PS1 games. Some PS1 games actually performed better on a slim, some worse, and some didn't play at all.

I am terminally confused about this, so bear with me: you don't need a Playstation Plus Premium sub to buy/play this, correct?

yup. they don't make games like this anymore.
But literally
I'M GOIN' FOR IT!
>Mario 64 has hundreds of quality romhacks
>Ape Escape doesn't have shit
Well you see the thing is base Mario 64 kind of sucks.
The hacks at Sony failed to advertise these masterpieces properly. The apes unironically should've been PlayStation's mascots.
Rabbids before Rabbids were a thing. Kinda.
Yeah, but at least the Apes stay mostly silent and aren't annoyingly obnoxious like the Rabbids.
They're seriously master crafted for marketing. Makes no sense whatsoever that Sony didn't give this series a proper push.
Ah, a fellow Casi enjoyer, I see.
Well there was Ape Academy 1 and 2 for psp.
>Europe only
Oh right I forgot SCEA is staffed by retards.
*Spike a new gadget is completed!

>Play Ape Escape 3 two decades later

Used to have a huge crush on her when i was like 8 or something. I wanted to press my head into her chest bumps and feel the warm sweater.
