The entire like first 30 mins of the game are literally them sitting down and shitting on all the fans of the old games and actively mocking them by saying that stuff is shit and you don't REALLY want it.
There's a reason that Nuts and Bolts was so hated and it wasn't just because the gameplay was way different. The game actively went out of its way to alienate it's old fanbase as much as possible.
overwhelmingly most of the people that dont like nuts and bolts never played it.
Teasing at the start is just british humor dude, something rare has always done. The gameplay is very solid, its still the best vehicle builders.
Fans not being able to accept new gameplay is what killed banjo. We'd have banjo threeie by now if the audience wasnt stuborn man babies clinging onto their childhood. Its almost as if they deserved being shat on.
>hehe it's just cheeky British humor!
But it's not funny is the main issue. And considering there was never another proper game after this and fans had been waiting an entire generation, it was just annoying. >bro you should have just accepted that this game was completely different and nothing like the games you loved! You're a manbaby otherwise!
How about fuck you, retard. Change is not universally good. Not to mention Nuts and Bolts had a ton of fundamental issues even apart from that including bloated, empty worlds, repetitive as fuck challenges and the constant need to make you shackled to the stupid ass cart.
Game was pretty though. If it had been a real Banjo game it would have been cool.
The gameplay was solid, yes, but the game design was not. When your game is literally designed around building new vehicles and using them in creative ways, why are most of the challenges just a straight up race? Likewise, why make it more than half of the missions require you to use a premade vehicle?
Conceptually, everything about the game is great. However, the empty levels, the extremely braindead missions, and the overall lack of creativity makes the game a bit of a slog to play through.
The thing that really pisses me off personally is that the DLC is EXACTLY what the game should have been. The DLC has tons of weird little missions, hell, it even has races that use weird parts and things. The best part however is that theres two challenges to every mission, one where you have to use whatever gimped vehicle they give you, and another where you can make it yourself. Where was this game design in the main game?
>Where was this game design in the main game?
Driver San Francisco is a great example of what could have been a shitty game (racing game with the ability to teleport around, wtf?) with great mission design to make it feel fresh and interesting throughout the entire game.
Sometimes its not the idea that sucks but what you do with it, sadly yeah, this one seemed to suffer a lot from that.
>British humor
Each time someone says they when talking about Nuts and Bolts, they forget the joke need a punchline. Cranky’s jokes in the DKC trilogy was about that his games were much better and that the kongs were incompetent. You later prove that wrong. The joke in N&B is that most Banjo fans would prefer another platformer…so Rare gives them a building game instead. It doesn’t make sense
Cheeky humor in games only ever works if the game is good. If it isn't it's like the game has 0 self-awareness in its own mediocrity. Them shitting on the old games, even if it's just in jest, while also learning nothing from what made those games charming and good for the time just reflects poorly on the devs. As if they disregarded Kazooie to modernize banjo when the modernization was already outdated as a cartoon mascot build cars game in an era where realistic games dominated the market, and it wasn't as sanitized as the kinect shit to appeal to normies
>overwhelmingly most of the people that dont like nuts and bolts never played it.
I played it when it came out and thought that it was shit > The gameplay is very solid, its still the best vehicle builders.
debatable cause no matter what you built, no matter how stable you thought it was your creation would find some way to fuck you over from winning a race or an objective > Fans not being able to accept new gameplay is what killed banjo
Yet years later we got Yooka-Laylee and people loved it, too the point where people were confused as to why it wasnt Banjo-Threeie. It wasnt people being stubborn, game devs are so hung up on making the best new thing they dont stop and think to implement something old into their games.
>Yet years later we got Yooka-Laylee and people loved it
I don't think so, Tim. It was like a Chinese knock-off of Banjo-Kazooie and was a frustrating experience.

It got a lot of hype. In the end there was drama with one of the VAs and the game didn't do enough to carry it's length but it did prove that the desire for more games like Banjo was there and that there was a willing fanbase.
Wait, why is not wanting to accept new gameplay a bad thing? If it replaces the old gameplay, obviously it wouldn't appeal to anyone who likes that other type of game. You're aiming for the wrong target audience.
Because Banjo-Kazooie’s gameplay was always just an a copy and paste inferior version of Mario 64 (and before that it was a cope and paste inferior version of A Link to the Past). I think that was more because Yooka-Laylee was a bad game and would of still been a bad game had it been released in 1998. Unlike Banjo.
Funny how Mario Odyssey is effectively a reskinned Banjo game and yet it was made with widespread acclaim.

gregg wrote half of the cranky kong material in the dkc series and the studio got hate mail from retarded americans and japanese people all the time for it. people here should check out an archived version of the old rare website, leigh loveday (who did some of the supporting characters writing for n&b, but gregg did all the banjo/kazooie/grunty/LOG stuff), throughout the entire 90s and 00s would dunk on retards begging for sequels to this or that every single month
Rare was a studio of asshole shitposters through and through until don mattrick ordered them to make kinect sports have no funny guy shit just make it like wii sports

See I definitely agree that Rare shitposting was based as hell, but the opening for N&B goes a little too far. Not because it's offensive, but because it almost comes off as desperate and insecure about the direction it's taking the series. (Like, yeah, okay Gregg, you're turning the funny bear and bird platformer into a Lego racing game. Do you have to "inb4" your fanbase THAT hard if you're so confident in your choice of direction?) It's no wonder why for years fans thought that Rare were being held at gunpoint to make N&B instead of a proper Banjo 3.
Given what former developers have said over the years, I suspect that the direction Gregg chose for Banjo was not universally agreed upon, which would explain a lot. That said, I don't harbor any ill will towards Gregg. Guy's a legend. But I don't think I'll ever not be a little tweaked that we didn't get a proper Banjo 3.
And I like N&B, for the record. Far from perfect, but it's fun to fuck around in and still retains some of that classic Banjo charm. Just wish it didn't feel so repetitive with its challenges. REALLY could've benefited from more standard platforming challenges to mix things up.

The internal issue at rare was that tim stamper selected gregg to be his successor, being the boss of the lead A-team barn, after DKC2. Other teams felt they were equally skilled (or more, see: the goldeneye guys), and didnt like having their projects being considered a lesser priority (see: kameo and PDZ sacrificed to make 360 launch date). Nuts and bolts was an extremely ambitious and completely untested in the market design aspiration (+7th gen graphics and programming complexity with physics and shit) that required basically the entire studio to crunch hard. Tim and chris came up with the whole idea for n&b and left filthy rich a year before it was finished, and after it gregg even got demoted out of management and microsoft picked kinect sports out of a lot of pitches to put the entire studio on. This really pissed off a lot of people because they thought a return to multi-team development setup but more equal would happen after N&B
I agree n&b has by far the most sarcastic and trollish writing out of anything rares ever made but I think the main group that were pissed off were casual banjo fans and the nintendo defense force retards amplified their reaction all over. people forget now but nintendo fans online circa 2002 were almost as insane as ps3-era snoys, and by 2008 they had that ps4-era snoy arrogance and were excited to see rare fail for “betraying” them

it's a different dimension from cranky shit talking me because at least DKC is actually a good game and the bantz is at my expense, not the expense of the game.
Also, it came off as absurdly insecure

DK GB is better than DKC and Cranky was right, they were just making a flashy platformer (aka super mario bros clone) with nice graphics. > i just think nuts and bolts came off as way too high on their farts "lol lmao we know what's good now, what you thought you liked is actually shit get over it and love this completely different game"
Literally 15 years ahead of their time and nintendo themselves copying from rare and not the other way around like back in the day. TTOK is going on all the greatest games of all times list just like BOTW. Gregg were right, and banjo fans are imbeciles who deserve to be insulted for worshipping his vastly inferior mario 64 ripoff
Americans are physiologically incapable of understanding banter. They have too much of a God complex to even perceive being taken down a peg. This applies to all of them regardless of personal politics. They're born like that.
Self aware humor and taking the piss out of everything is their M.O.
I'm sorry that you are still triggered by a throwaway joke to this day. If you played the rest of the game you would have seen the love and respect they had for the franchise.
I'd normally understand it but I think even they realised it probably wasn't the time to poke that bear seeing as there hadn't been a proper BK game for a while and haven't made one since.
Can you point to me where another Rare game outside of Conker made fun of Saving Private Ryan?
I guess that's outside of their wheelhouse too because two examples don't exist?

This. Just playing Banjo Tooie the game doesn't take itself seriously at all. Heck conker is literally just a satire of the entire platforming genre
It was pretty bad IMO. Failed at its most basic premise. Had next to no reason to not make one mutlipurpose vehicle since 9/10 events were just races of some description OR races that used a premade vehicle. There were hardly any challenges that took advantage of the fact that you could make a vehicle or did anything unique/interesting.
>they knew the system was unbalanced so like half of all challenges made you use the boring ass default cart instead of your own thing.
God this game pissed me off.
>physics are janky as shit >vehicles wobble all over the place and are constantly falling off everything, and the levels are designed with verticality like platformer levels >story is completely disjointed and makes no sense, with characters randomly taking on different roles in each world >90% of missions are just a race or time trial, or trying to carry some bouncy ball that easily falls out of your shitty vehicle past some rough terrain
I'm not sorry. The game was shit. The building was fun, but actually using the vehicles was garbage. The only actual fun I had in the game was collecting notes on foot in the hub world, and even that was extremely limited.
No at best its a good idea done poorly at its worst is a slog of some of the most boring ass races in a game some of which don't even make use of the games main selling point seriously why even build vehicles if your going to constantly be shoved into shitty prebuilt ones
Building shit was never the problem, it was everything else. There was nothing to do. You could platform around Showdown Town and find crates but that's it. The challenges for getting jiggies were vapid as hell and their simplicity made crafting vehicles feel like a giant waste of time.
Could have just made a normal 3D platformer that involved building shit at the same time and it would have worked great.
This 100%. The sad part is there were the occasional challenges that did different things and were really fun. The one that had you launching yourself as far as possible comes to mind in particular. Its just that missions that actually used the vehicle creation system were extremely few and far between. The most common use was just sticking you in a vehicle with super poor handling and requiring you to do a race or timed checkpoint event. There was a lot of potential, its just never actually used, and comes off as if they had a few ideas and just padded the rest of the game with racing challenges.
>Building shit was never the problem, it was everything else. There was nothing to do. You could platform around Hyrule and find zonai junk but that's it. The challenges for getting zonai shit were vapid as hell and their simplicity made crafting vehicles feel like a giant waste of time.
Should have been a sequel to Blast Corps, since that one used vehicles to complete its challenges.
Even if it HAD to be a Banjo game, making the Lord of Games was a mistake. There's breaking the 4th wall and then there's completely erasing it with a reality-warping wizard. If they made the creation of vehicles a necessity because of how absolutely brutal Grunty designed her levels would have given a personal reason to the players to design one. Just having LOG make levels different for demographic reasons is not very compelling. Would anyone in Half-Life 2 have been excited to play with the gravity gun if G-man showed up out of nowhere and said "Mr. Freeman, gamerssss don't want to shoot things, they want physics puzzles"? I think not.
A 1.5 deluxe rerelease of this game for SeX, pc, and switch/switch2 would go gangster in the current culture of multiplayer and streaming stuff. Honestly would be vastly more successful than anything else rare could make rn, even more than “banjo threeie”
-add bonus platforming micro levels hidden in the town and worlds
-tighten up the vehicle handling a bit
-more parts
-a new map and missions
-cross platform multiplayer and save migration between switch and pc/SeX
-character select in multiplayer guest starring Link
>Game is just okay 7 or 8 out of ten >Nintendo copies the same exact shit but worse >OMG GAME OF THE YEAR 10/10 the game is so creative letting you do what ever!
You cannot make this shit up
Why is anyone surprised? They copied fucking Crash Nitro Kart for the zero G segments of Mario Kart 8. >But le F-Zero
Not even close to the same execution.
The people that complain about the "simple" objectives in this game never progressed passed the start. The later half of the game has some really interesting challenges with lots of creative solutions (as evident by watching the leaderboards). The problem is that in a creative game the only limitation is the person doing the creating, and a vast majority of players are creatively bankrupt.
>dude do a lap around a track with checkpoint rings that go on land underwater and in the air >wow you made a plane that divebombs the water hard enough to hit an underwater ring, but I made a boat that uses a spring to jump high enough to get the air checkpont rings >so creative
I played the game fifteen fucking years ago, after about the third level when I realized that you never need custom vehicles and generics solve everything I remember hating it all the way through.
Anon, I got 1000 gamerscore on it and being generous only 30% of the vehicle pieces have any use and many of them are just for one-offs or redundant. You're often provided a vehicles for most of the specialised challenges, otherwise you just need a car, or a plane or a boat.
You could literally make a vehicle that functions as a car, boat and plane that can handle most of the missions.
Except half the fun was competing on the leaderboard and coming up with ideas to beat other players.
Sorry if that's not you're thing, but I remember some really clever contraptions.
Incredibly underrated soundtrack by Grant Kirkhope, including fantastic orchestration. I never played the game and don't doubt that it's garbage, but listen to this and tell me it isn't top-tier.
All I ever did in this game was build vehicles and cruise them around Banjoland which was an 11/10 environment. It never got old, I loved that level. Fuck it might go do that right now.
The eyes of a bird who had to carry a bear around on her twig legs for 2 entire games..
>adds eyelashes
I now want segs
I used to hang out in front of Humba watching she does that handstand thing
Never.

It's no wonder why for years fans thought that Rare were being held at gunpoint to make N&B instead of a proper Banjo 3.
I agree n&b has by far the most sarcastic and trollish writing out of anything rares ever made but I think the main group that were pissed off were casual banjo fans and the nintendo defense force retards amplified their reaction all over. people forget now but nintendo fans online circa 2002 were almost as insane as ps3-era snoys, and by 2008 they had that ps4-era snoy arrogance and were excited to see rare fail for “betraying” them
You say Rare gave up their humor before Sea of Thieves, but then forget they had captain in that game called Quick Dicken.
The true genius of sea of thieves is that gregg can troll his audience directly in multiplayer on alt accounts, stealing their pointless collectathon treasures, and they cant turn off the pvp
i just think nuts and bolts came off as way too high on their farts "lol lmao we know what's good now, what you thought you liked is actually shit get over it and love this completely different game"
it's a different dimension from cranky shit talking me because at least DKC is actually a good game and the bantz is at my expense, not the expense of the game.
The Western developed DMC gambit.
Hideo Kojima is a legend for somehow getting his fans to actually like him doing it over and over
>actively mocking them by saying that stuff is shit
And they're completely right.
naw, fuck you
>people still getting filtered by Rares humor
And you call yourself "Rare fans." Disgraceful.
Based N&B still causing seethe to this day.
Americans are physiologically incapable of understanding banter. They have too much of a God complex to even perceive being taken down a peg. This applies to all of them regardless of personal politics. They're born like that.
Post humorous examples from rare games outside this game that take the piss exactly on the player for being "entitled".
I'll wait.
I dont think they gave a shit because they just made a completely inoffensive game that everybody likes (viva pinata) and it didnt sell
>No example, just deflection
of course
Can you point to me where another Rare game outside of Conker made fun of Saving Private Ryan?
I guess that's outside of their wheelhouse too because two examples don't exist?
Nobody is falling for your sophistry.
>every game pokes fun at, the competition, other games, other things
>the one game that everyone hates takes the piss for half an hour on the player for wanting a banjo platformer
>they're all the same you're just fake fans!!
It's clear you don't understand British humor.
They made fun of everything. Shitposting in video game form. The fact that you took the Banjo stuff seriously and are still triggered by it to this day is embarrassing. Let it go man.
Yes, Gregg, you were misunderstood all along, it really was funny
Go finish everwild, it's been 4 years
Gregg is too busy sleeping on piles of cash to be wasting his time on basket weaving forums.
This. Just playing Banjo Tooie the game doesn't take itself seriously at all. Heck conker is literally just a satire of the entire platforming genre
if totk gets praised for ruining the IP then so should nuts and bolts
They are polar opposites bknb is the car game with bk tacked on, totk is zelda with chemiatry logically extended to mechanics.
nice cope
totk is gmod with zelda tacked on.
You were wrong in 2008 and Zelda is wrong in 2023. There will be no apology.
I'm sorry.
Sorry that you smell like parrot guano!
So is it understood by this point that this game's outcome was Rare's own fault and that Microsoft was relatively hands-off with this game?
microsoft has been hands off for better or worse with all their studios. Thats why they have alot of unique games, but the dev cycles are a mess.
>physics are janky as shit
>vehicles wobble all over the place and are constantly falling off everything, and the levels are designed with verticality like platformer levels
>story is completely disjointed and makes no sense, with characters randomly taking on different roles in each world
>90% of missions are just a race or time trial, or trying to carry some bouncy ball that easily falls out of your shitty vehicle past some rough terrain
I'm not sorry. The game was shit. The building was fun, but actually using the vehicles was garbage. The only actual fun I had in the game was collecting notes on foot in the hub world, and even that was extremely limited.
You’re describing the new Zelda
Literally none of those things are true of the new Zelda, other than the levels having verticality, but not like a platformer.
The only good thing about banjo is the gay bear furry porn that came out of it
This is not debatable otherwise it's a shitty game that you could only enjoy as a child who doesn't know any better
Not really a furry's place to assert knowing better about anything. You failed before the gun went off to start the race.
Don't have to be a furry to like furry porn
How Nintendo made Nuts and Bolts an underappreciated classic in an afternoon with one simple trick.
More like dragged it kicking and screaming from the grave and back into public consciousness. I, for one, was fine with it staying dead and buried.
It's just retards being contrarian fucks because they have a nintendo hate boner
I always liked Nuts and Bolts.
No at best its a good idea done poorly at its worst is a slog of some of the most boring ass races in a game some of which don't even make use of the games main selling point seriously why even build vehicles if your going to constantly be shoved into shitty prebuilt ones
>thing Microsoft
;(
>thing Nintendo
😀
That about sums it up. Now watch as JonTron and his gaggle of tendies reveal themselves as massive hypocrites.
>games are one singular mechanic
if you shit on balan wonderworld you're never allowed to like a collectathon ever again
Grant Kirkhope's thoughts on Nuts & Bolts. Basically what most people think, putting Banjo and Kazooie in the game was a mistake.
His opinion is irrelevant on the matter
Never! Not in six billion years!
What did this even mean
what was it in reference too? was it the Rareware Collection?
It was nothing.
It was just referencing the fact that the original Banjo was 10 years old at that point (NaB came out 8 years after Tooie).
No, Zoomers are mentally ill and boomers had all the right to trash this and Trannies of the Kingdom.
This single passage pissed off a legion of gamers.
Especially since it is a shooter box exclusive.
Nuts and bolts would have been appreciated more on a different system.
such as?
I already apologized when I finally played it in 2011
Should have been a sequel to Blast Corps, since that one used vehicles to complete its challenges.
>Wanted the Tooie equivalent to BoTW's Banjo Kazooie
>Get Zelda Nuts & Bolts instead
is there a way to play this on PC?
there's a 360 emulator if you're on windows
Okay but Banjo 1.5 was actually kind of fun for a GBA game. I don't know why but I have a shit load of nostalgia for these pseudo 3D GBA games.
same
I liked banjo pilot
I think it's the only game i've ever 100%
why? i didn't make it.
>-character select in multiplayer guest starring Link
The Ganker meltdown for that alone is enough to make me want this.
Fuck you, Banjo was never good.
>Game is just okay 7 or 8 out of ten
>Nintendo copies the same exact shit but worse
>OMG GAME OF THE YEAR 10/10 the game is so creative letting you do what ever!
You cannot make this shit up
They even copied N&B's Super Fuel design for their shitty zonai batteries. You can't even make this shit up.
The problem is that in a creative game the only limitation is the person doing the creating, and a vast majority of players are creatively bankrupt.
>dude do a lap around a track with checkpoint rings that go on land underwater and in the air
>wow you made a plane that divebombs the water hard enough to hit an underwater ring, but I made a boat that uses a spring to jump high enough to get the air checkpont rings
>so creative
>one objective in the game is the entire game
You didn't play the game, but that's okay.
I played the game fifteen fucking years ago, after about the third level when I realized that you never need custom vehicles and generics solve everything I remember hating it all the way through.
That's because you're creatively bankrupt. Stick to bing bing wahoo and army simulator.
Sorry if that's not you're thing, but I remember some really clever contraptions.
why do euros always ruin threads with political bullshit?
Still a hideously ugly art style
>Apologize
I am not nintendo
Incredibly underrated soundtrack by Grant Kirkhope, including fantastic orchestration. I never played the game and don't doubt that it's garbage, but listen to this and tell me it isn't top-tier.
All I ever did in this game was build vehicles and cruise them around Banjoland which was an 11/10 environment. It never got old, I loved that level. Fuck it might go do that right now.
