It's hard for a city builder to break out of the shadow of Simcity, and Cities Skylines is a DLC-fest with all the problems of burgerland infrastructure.
Simcity hasn't been relevant for nearly 20 fricking years where actual city builder fans are concerned. In fact, its franchise death has been the best thing to happen to the subgenre,
Sim City was a diorama builder even worse than Planet Coaster and its sheer dominance made it very difficult for any other games to get off the ground. Post 2013, city builders are unironically in a golden age.
That just proves it was the pinnacle of the genre. Almost no game can nail urban city building like Simcity can, and most others are either too small in scale or don't really have any incentive to progress, save for the aforementioned Cities Skylines which has its own share of problems.
If NewCity didn't frick the fast forwarding however many months ago. I think it would be the best candidate for urban building. Very nice and big scale, now ruined by unbearable speeds

I'd be interested to know why you think Sim City was so bad for city builders, and what current offerings do better. Genuinely, not trying a gotcha or anything.
I have full faith in Crate to build this into a great game. The support for Grim Dawn post launch was fantastic from them and they really seem to know what they want and how to achieve it, even if it'll take a while.
The city builder genre seems to have morphed into a survival building one. I don't think there's been a breakout classic Sim City style city builder for a while.
>playing city builder >makan a perfectly nice city >suddenly, transdimensional entities start harvesting your city and crafting the flesh in to abominations of meat and bone
well it could be worse, there could also be OH GOD DAMMIT GODZILLA IS INVADING TOO
I thought Farthest Frontier was more of a Banished clone than a proper city builder (but I've never played Banished to be fair). Is it even a breakout hit? The /vst/ thread seems to be having a somewhat mixed reception so far.
They would still be alive IF THE FRICKING GERMS DIDN'T FRICK UP THE SETTLERS SERIES WITH THEIR moronic SOCIAL MEDIA INTEGRATION CANCER AND STUPID SHIT IDEAS.
>coming back
they've never went
What was a good (finished) one in the last five or something years?
I enjoy the genre but can genuinely not think of any off the top of my head
Nebuchadnezzar
Anno 1800
You didn't play Anno 1800?
No, because I didn't enjoy the previous games I played in the series.

EA killed it with 2013.

I hope you're joking

Definitely, Sim City 2013 is still one of the worst city builders I have ever played.

>steam's
what a fricking Black person website lmao steam had nothing to do with it
>Gaem jurnalism
What did you expect?
>reading comprehension
Fricking hell, dude.
I cant wait for them to include BLM events that destroy and lower your city's value.
>latest breakout hit
Neat, I guess I'll ch-
>early access indie game with somewhat positive reception
really desperate for articles I guess.
is this any good? i feel like every banished clone has been garbage so far

I just want Open Sim City 4

This is just a Banished clone isn't it?
Yes
I don't know about Banished despite all the mentions. Can I have a quick run down?
It's an unfinished colony survival game with a few glaring flaws (like pop growth and death spirals), somewhat improved by the Colonial Charter mod.
So this is like AoE but without the RTS parts I'm assuming?
when the frick is that pharaoh remake coming out? shit was announced like 3 years ago
dont care give me a new ARPG, crate.
They have spent like a decade making one, give them a break.
You can play Path of Exile 2 instead or make an overhaul mod for GD.
