Yes they are better. The reason there's a "bias" in the first place is because they really are just objectively better. Weebs exist for a reason. You think it's because they appreciate the culture and history of Japan? Sure, maybe they learn about it later but weebs are weebs because of games and anime. If Japs weren't better at games than the west, weebs would only be like half as common as they are.

      Anonymous

What kind of logic is this? Japanese games and anime are niche. They are despised by the general population. By your logic there should be more weebs than people who like western games and cartoons etc.

        Anonymous

Okay, so then where are the weeb equivalents for countries like Vietnam or China? Why are there coincidentally no common terms for people who obsess over any countries besides the one pumping out games and anime?

Nintendo singlehandedly resurrected the gaming industry in the mid 80s after the west absolutely fricked it up.

i was thinking about that the other day. Japanese games are style over subtance (persona 5, dragon quest, suda and swery games, etc) meanwhile western games is about adding every amount of content they can (fallout, skyrim, any fortnite type of game that have a shit ton of costumes) even if it doesn’t fit the game (GoW having RPG elements, the 272729 collectables in every open world, etc)

        >(fallout, skyrim, any fortnite type of game that have a shit ton of costumes
How are those not "style over substance?" Skyrim and Fallout have extremely unengaging gameplay, everything is just copy/pasted ensuring there are no unique encounters and no challenges and no fun. But

anon read my post. i said big ammount of content, not good content. skyrim and fallout are known for be big and having a shit ton of mission and quest and shit to do. you’re right their gameplay is mediocre. the few japanese people that play western game gets impressed over how big theses games are. but i mist admit fallout is another case of “style over substance” with post apocaliptic/50s mic they do

        Anonymous

It's not "style over substance" if the style also leads to the gameplay being fun. A single, linear, tightly-designed and 90% enjoyable experience is infinitely preferable to an open world that only has truly good chances of being enjoyable for the 10-20% of the time you're doing a properly linear and curated sequence of events.

most japanese games are rpg, anon. and the gameplay on thoses aren’t that fun. Only nintendo game and action character games (dmc, bayonetta, ninja gaiden) are fun. The rest you play them to experience the story or because the do something innovative/unique enough that makes you play it, even if in the end is pretry jank, like suda and swery games

            Anonymous

No, they're not. Most Japanese games aren't RPGs at all.
That aside, I like JRPG gameplay. Sometimes it requires me to do something weird to be truly fun but it's usually at least enjoyable.

Japanese games aren't INHERENTLY better if that's what you're trying to say, it's just that Japanese games, most often more obviously Japanese games, are more likely to be good on average, at least within the AAA sphere.
The main reason, I think, is that "hobbyist culture" in Japan isn't as dead as in the west, so many games are still developed with their actual audience in mind, rather than the largest possible crowd that wants a taste of something that was once the domain of hobbyists.
The indie scene is more hit or miss, though.

I dont hold jap shit up it just happens to be significantly better than western stuff most of the time and it doesnt just apply to vidya
I love tons of western movies from the 80s to around 2000-2005~ and tolkiens work is probably my favorite single piece of fiction
Vidya follows a similiar pattern where some of my favorite games from my childhood were western games like spyro/tony hawks pro skater/diablo 2/C&C but all the western studios I liked were fleeced and are either dead or are something else wearing the originals skin
Dont get me wrong my favorite jap devs have had ups and downs like capcom around 2010 until a few years ago or konami for like the last 15 or square enix and its fricking wild inconsistency since square soft and enix merged
And thats without mentioning how far western landscape has come with nickel and diming and focus group testing for player retention to wring out more etc, its practically as bad as the shit korea does but atleast the asiatics dont try to hide it

      Anonymous

Japanese games are targeted at children and teenagers, because japanese adults don't have time for video games. You can actually gauge the maturity of a person by how much they like japanese games. Well-adjusted adults are more likely to enjoy western games, with genres such as strategy and simulation that are common in the west but totally absent in Japan.

      Anonymous

If being well adjusted means being so self-conscious you have to hold up your tastes as more “mature” on an anonymous Mongolian throat singing forum, then I think I’m happy being maladjusted, thanks.

I don't know what your definition of maturity is. But if your tastes haven't changed since you were a child, then you haven't matured.

          >MOMMY MOMMY NOOOOOOOOOOO I'M AN ADULT LOOK HOW MATURE I AM WAAAAHHH

Their entire premise is to make a medium for idiots that want to be passively entertained and weirdos like you that are obsessed with "muhh serious mature story!" You can gloss over the cs lewis quote that btfo your argument but it won't stop it from being true.

In the 80s and 90s, I'd say indisputably.

But once games started becoming movies and graphics got better, they dropped the ball because Japanese people rarely make good movies. Plus their gameplay in the early 2000s was bogged down by tradition. Western games took that opportunity to innovate and blast them out of the water.

Now we're in the era where a giant like Square Enix is trying to make a Skyrim/Witcher game as their next FF. What a world.

      Anonymous

Japan’s problem was catering to people who last played video games in the 80s.
And now western games are bogged down pleasing people who NEVER played video games in the first place. So Japan is back to dominating. In another 10 or 20 years I bet the western indie scene will be capitalizing on nostalgic inspiration from those turn of the century western games, though.

You make it sound like that was a bad thing. That behavior is exactly how we got Demon's Souls, during a stagnant console generation chock full of hilarious amounts of handholding and tutorials.
Gamers were starving for "NES hard" games that harkened back to the 80s/90s, where you actually had to learn a game's mechanics to progress.

      Anonymous

I mostly agree with this, since FromSoft really moved the combat mechanics in the action RPG genre forward with Demon's Souls. Western games have been trying to catch up in that department ever since. That entire console generation felt really fricking stagnant. But otherwise, yeah.

As for good Japanese films, they really are getting shit on by South Korea, aren't they? A good relatively recent Japanese film is "One Cut of the Dead". Check it out.
