The only reason to play a JRPG is the characters and story.

Final Fantasy 7 didn't become one of the most cherished games of all time because of its gameplay.

7s story was better paced even though it has its drags. The opening puts you right into the action, and most story events are things unfolding in front of you rather than exposition and recapping. Triangle Strategy was fricking terrible about that. I just wanted to say how much I hate that aspect of Triangle Strategy.

(here is a brief cutscene of me explaining how much I hate triangle strategy)

This shit was so fricking weird in Triangle Strategy. It reminded me of a Dragon Ball episode ending with the narrator going "And Gohan has become Super Saiyan 2 for the first time! But will it be enough to defeat Cell? Find out in the next episode of Dragon Ball Z!"
Except it's a game so there's no need to wait for a next episode

When you think about it, JRPGs are just interactive movies. You can build your character and influence the plot a little, but at the end of the day you want to see what Cloud is going to do about Sephiroth.

There's fun in strategy, and I greatly enjoy turn based RPGs for how much they make me think. Still, I'm just moving through menus at the end of the day, and I accept that.

FF7 has a great turn based battle system, an interesting world to explore, fun secrets, mini games and side quests. The story was good, but that was not why I care about the game. I actually can't remember most of the story. FF13 has done immense damage to the JRPG genre by turning them into anime movies.

        >JRPG gameplay
In JRPGs having character movement is so rare that it's a novelty and these are called "tactical" games. Most JRPGs have rules-light, theater-of-the-mind combat systems. Because while everybody is programming real-time physics engines for their games, JRPG developers think doing anything besides rolling dice and calculating a few numbers is too hard.

For replays, forced cutscenes, and the unfortunate event of an emergency forcing you to fast track to the nearest save location.
Also this give everyone even more of a reason to point and laugh at moron's that don't know what's going on when not only did the skip the cutscenes but refused to read a few measly lines of text.

To be fair, a lot of it can be blamed on ESLs. They insist on playing English versions of games but cry when they have to actually read the language.

People love this game for some reason but it looks so unbelievably ugly that it puts me off from playing it every time I try.

      >but it looks so unbelievably ugly
Probably because when it released for the GBA it was made for the hardware and it looked absolutely incredible, and the devs didn't intend on some poorgay using a shitty emulator decades later to play in on a massively bigger computer monitor.

Why would you want a summary of something you don't care about?
What do you need it for? Either skip all cutscenes and ignore all story or watch the fricking cutscenes.

Long cutscenes are not a core tenet of JRPGs. Early JRPGs had no real cutscenes. The amount and length of cutscenes has increased with every new console generation, but it is not a "core tenet".

      >Long cutscenes are not a core tenet of JRPGs.
A heavy emphasis on story IS a core tenet, and people call characters talking "cutscenes" just because there's no combat happening.
      >Early JRPGs had no real cutscenes
Hardware limitations. Crono was called Crono in Chrono Trigger just to save a few bytes by removing the "h".

Granblue the gacha has the same feature. They implemented it after FKHR got salty people just skipped all of grub's homosexual events because they didn't care.
here's a quick rundown of the angelhomosexual saga
    >sandy is gay. he is sad lucifer died because he was gay for lucifer. then he gets unearned shounen power-up to fight faa-san who is also gay and shoots faa-san over the rainbow. belial (who is omnisexual) follows faa.
see the whole story was just 100% fully homo. homoknights are similarly tedious.

To be fair, I also had 0 interest in playing Granblue Relink after they censored it on release by slapping big ugly shorts under every girls skirt. I guess that's what happens when your game comes to PS, though.

I watched all the scenes and still found the story tedious. It's not awful, it's just full of cliches that are popular in anime but I don't personally enjoy because I consider them overused to the point of being trite. I get that a lot of fans not only expect these cliches but actively want them - but for me, the shonen protagonist telling the wilting overly-timid girl he'll protect her is the equivalent of a western character saying "Uh, well THAT just happened."

Only poser zoomers watch cutscenes, let alone dubbed cutscenes. Real fans imported JRPGs and played the games without knowing any Japanese other than メニユー, アイテム, and 攻撃

Star Ocean 3 had this back in 2003, I believe some cutscenes might've been before boss fights and they had a trophy system for things like no-hit/etc.
