Are there any other JRPGs or action RPGs with the kind of dark themes and demonic designs like SMT?
I really dig the "final fantasy but with demons" vibe that Digital Devil Saga had going for it.

Monark.
Shit coomer tier trash
can you speak without using buzzwords?
I don't really think there's a direct equivalent, SMT is one of a kind. Closest I think of is Drakengard/Nier having similar dark apocalyptic themes but all the occultism is made up, or the Xeno games having a lot of overlapping occult religious elements but the tone is (mostly) not as dark.
Cool. What are the best SMT games in terms of story. I'm not too interested in the high school elements tbh. I want to slay cool looking demons.
Strange Journey. It's pure sci-fi, play as a UN expedition fighting demons in Antarctica.
I'm more thinking of the home console entries (like Digital Devil Saga, Devil Summoner, SMT 3 and 4, Persona Strikers).
I'm planning to emulate on PC.
what a dumb criterion. SJ's gameplay is in the same style as Devil Summoner and SMT1 and 2
Yeah but it's first person which isn't exactly interesting at all.
what a bizarre opinion, it's the same exact shit dude. also in that case drop Devil Summoner 1 and 2 from your list unless you only meant the Raidou games which are mediocre anyway
Not even that guy but SJ's boring as hell because of demon coop.
>m-muh press turn
the combat is retro on purpose and also the demon password and sub-app systems either substitute or expand on things from other modern entries
if that's how narrowed down it is then he's lucky to get examples from the same fricking series, let alone other JRPGs
I mean... the OP was asking for story driven games with the same vibe. He wasn't asking for "What's the best SMT and/or spinoff"
To that end maybe El Shaddai fits the bill? Bootleg 3rd person action game but I'll be damned if it isn't interesting.
Yeah I meant Raidou, it's more that PS2 and PS4 games can look good on an HDTV, whole DS games are so low resolution that it can't look good.
i don't think you understand that almost all emulators have 3D upscaling
Yeah but the low resolution assets in a DS game or PS1 game look at lot worse.
not really though, you'll still be able to the count the polygons and you'll still have extremely low-res HUD elements that look jarring on an HD display
another thing to mention is strange journey has a redux version on the 3DS and 3DS games look barely worse than PS2 games
It's just going to look bad when you blow up a Nintendo DS game on at 42 inch Tv
Digital Devil Saga is the most story-driven game.
*games... it's a duology and your save carries over some stuff.
The gameplay is meh (I just finished replaying them both a few weeks ago) but the atmosphere is unparalleled and it's some of Shoji Meguro's best tracks.
Sure
My favorite, perfect.
Gale's critical hit animation is fricking badass.
It's kind of tragic that the original plot got fricked.
What was the original plot?
Nothing is gonna scratch that DDS itch, its my favorite game of all time
Depends what exactly you're looking for.
Parasite Eve has a modern real world setting. More sci-fi and lacks the occult/religious aspects but if the body horror kinda stuff in DDS is what you're looking for there's a lot of that.
The original Shadow Hearts has lots of occult / demonic /horror themes in a semi-realistic setting. Sequels get progressively more absurd & goofy.
Pandora's Tower deals with some similar dark themes (not cannibalism like in DDS exactly, but something similar) and like PE has body horror elements. This is in more of a medieval fantasy setting.
Baroque is the closest thing I think I've played, with lots of religious imagery and a post-apocalyptic setting that's always given me strong SMT vibes. Unfortunately the game itself is pretty tedious and extremely obtuse but still worth checking out.
> Baroque
Not op, looks super cool. For someone who has played most of smt and can handle the obtuse, is this actually a good game? Never ever seen it before.
more dds concept art.
troony series
