I don't care about stuff like PvP or endgame content, just wanna level up a character and explore the world.

Best pserver community is /r/wowservers on plebbit, alternatively just go to Chromecraft, Darrowshire or Warmane

It was decent a few years ago when there were actually more than a handful of servers to pick from, now you literally just get the same "new player here, what expansion/which wotlk server do i roll on" threads every single day and people recommend the same two or three servers because those are all that exist at the moment, and you get the generic stock trinitycore WOTLK FRESH with people shitposting about WOTLK FRESH in the comments. Terrible community, the best thing is when an actually competent or interesting person like stoneharry post their stuff or explain the more technical side of emulating.

It's basically the only community in existence, so it's the best by default regardless of how actually shitty it is

Turtle WoW is designed exactly for what you need, they changed quest XP decay to give full credit up to 25 levels so you can be a completionist across lowbie zones as you like, it also has server-enforced challenge modes like Hardcore and one that cuts mob XP by 50% in exchange for some reward satchels every 10 levels. It also has a bunch of custom content modelled after cut alpha features like magical lockpicking for Mages and the disguise profession for Rogues. Much of it is just fluff (disguises only work out of combat and Mages can't hit the lockpick cap like Rogues still), but fluff is cool too. Also playable High Elves and Goblins, the good vanilla kind with the shit-eating grins.

Ascension is cool but definitely not what OP is looking for, that server is all about PVP and endgame

What if I want to compile my own core and host a server locally to play on my own?
I don't know if I should go with CMaNGOS or AzerothCore, which one has the least broken quests/events?

I don't think there's a meaningful difference in terms of scripting quality between Trinitycore and Azerothcore, it comes down to scripting language compatability, modular capability, that sort of stuff. Azerothcore is probably better since it already has a bunch of easy to install modules intended for soloplay.

Thanks. I'm mainly curious because I know there's a bot module for Trinity where you can have your alts join the game as bots and do quests together.
I had tried it many years ago on some old repack and it seemed pretty clunky to work with so I'm wondering if it's even worth having it in the first place, especially since there seem to be plenty of modules for balancing content around solo play. Thanks for the info.

Host your own offline version of the game and play it by yourself
