Are video games gains goblins? I’d argue that the best video games for keeping fit are the ones you can walk away from at any time with no commitment. I like arcade style games on the occasion.

The shoving of political views into vidya has made it an unjustifiable hobby for me. Once upon a time I would have argued for moderation since life is more than just drudgery and work, but it feels like more stubborn effort to get through games that are the digital equivalent of a Chinese factory made pride flag.

The most recent game I picked up and genuinely enjoyed was A Hat in Time. It did Banjo-Kazooie style shit way better than Yooka did. But there is too much shit to wade through, especially in the indie scene, for me to give games enough hunting time.

Yea pretty much. Video games were fun when they were actually made to be fun. Now, they're made by people that seem to hate the people playing them. You either have to have no self-esteem to subject yourself to that shit or you're looking to get demoralized.

This is such a pointless and inane complaint. There are many more things wrong with modern games than just 'muh politics'. Politics in games is basically a nonissue compared to everything else.
In fact, the only example of politics being inserted into a game I've experienced is the body type changes in classic wow. But I'm also able to switch genders at the hairdresser without paying $15. So its a win.

Kek, Custer's Revenge? A game that sold 80,000 copies on the only gaming system available at the time is hardly an example of a politicized game. Plus that was a game for adults so they could get a bit of value out of the system they bought for their child(ren). Find a better example.
The political issue in video games is that they are inorganically warping the political views of young impressionable minds towards marxist ideals. If you don't have a problem with that, you're better off dead.

Yes if they distract your focus away from anything else you should be doing. I quit gaming when I realized, one day after a workout, that I was just trying to get the workout over with so I could sit and play video games. I wasn't even really enjoying these games, they were a habit that I had since childhood.

It was too difficult to quit entirely for me, I'm not perfect, but I made a personal commitment to only practice Tetris and nothing else if I'm playing vidya by myself. That way it becomes more of a skill I'm practicing, like lifting or piano.

Like little fountains/gardens and display terrain and figurines. I also enjoy watching professional carpet cleaners clean carpets. If I like a person's voice and the period I also like watching history documentaries. I also like cooking shows, Tasting History is an enjoyable gay to watch and there is some German/Dutch woman I often find myself watching, her I enjoy because she doesn't talk.

Good thing some of the best games ever made are pick up and play. If I can't get instantly back into a game 3 months later because the systems are too complicated its not worth my time. Earth Defense Force is one of my favorites for this reason.

Everything in moderation, probably. I have weeks/months when I'm not in the mood to play anything, then I find something and play it one or two hours in one go per day, some games I play an hour a day, and very rarely I play more.
I remember during my twenties when me and my partner played Final Fantasy XII for hours on end during the nights and watched Sailor Moon in the early morning on TV afterwards. That was great, but only feasible for a set period of time.

      Why 12, I prefer 6, 7,8, 10, and even 13 to 12

        Anonymous

Because it was a great game with a great story, great characters, great soundtrack, great world and great presentations. I think the story wasn't as "in your face" as other Final Fantasys and dealt with a bigger scope. And Al-Cid Magrace was an absolute killer side character. Voice action was awesome, too, and the German localisation (text only) had great language.
It will always hold a special place in my heart.
We also played X and X-2 a lot. I played all Final Fantasys aside from 2, 9 and 15, but for me, 12 will always be the best.

  26. 1 year ago

Yes, OP. Video Games are gainz goblins. Here is why:
    1) They do not improve your life in any way whatsoever, with the exception that you may get an occasional serotonin spike.

    2) Most video games are built around cycles of play that give you dopamine and modern games look to make that reward cycle as short as possible so you'll stay in the game longer (often spending more money).

    3) Many competitive games are known for being "toxic", why? Because those games create an environment that make you feel good when you win, as if you were the cause, so that you'll continue to play. When you lose, the game will try and make it feel like you were not the cause so that you feel like you should play another game to "win back your placement". They do this by making the gane snowbally, or deliberately making the teams one-sided (see "loser's queue"). Ask yourself, do you feel good after playing? Often the answer is no.

    4) Opportunity cost - so, now that you're spending hours a day playing games, what else could you be doing? Many people want to find a grand purpose they are missing out on, however this makes people feel like they aren't missing anything. "I wasn't going to start my own company anyway, so I dint need those hours". But is your room clean? Is your laundry done? Is your spouse/partner content, or would they like to spend time with you? You have a partner right? If not, why are you sitting alone instead of going to a bar or some other social venue, (concert, bookstore, arcade, literally anywhere outside of your house)?

I say this as a video game addict. I started playing video games as a young kid with a Gameboy, and I never realized what I was missing or what a negative impact it had on me. I started playing competitive games in college (overwatch, league, hearthstone), and I found myself taking out my bad temper on my gf (later fiancé and then wife). Luckily I got away from playing videogames, but it took years and many, many fights to escape.

Agreed. It took me years to realize the same thing but I'm off of video games completely.
