        >why I can only see them after completing the mission
        To incentivize replays.

Also because some of the tasks are literally impossible to complete until later in the game. In a "You need an upgrade from 3/4 of the way into the game in order to complete this particular thing in the first couple of missions" matter, or other postgame stuff. So you're not supposed to stress about it your first time out.

The only thing I don't like is that (as I recall) to S-rank you need to get HYPER FAST TIME + NO ALERT (not sure if this is just no alarms or not even being noticed at all. Someone said you need to keep the "time slows down when yourre about to be noticed" thing from ever activating to get the bonus/top score in this category) + ALL MISSION OBJECTIVES INCLUDING SECRET ONES, all in the same run. Unless someone said it was patched to fix this so you could do a run where you did the minimum amount as fast as possible and got an S on time , but then came back later and took a long time slowly and methodically doing everything possible stealthy, so you get both S on no alert + objectives, and still get to "keep" your old S in time if you already unlocked it. ?

Again I don't even know why I need to do this stuff, is it like PW where blueprints are gated behind getting high ranks or completing certain/all tasks?

Pretty sure this is the case. Like you'll need stuff to unlock and even some of the high level S rank "staff" for your base with special characteristics etc... can only be unlocked this way. I think some also give rise to other stuff besides just being completionist autism and things like S-ranking a given level will sometimes be required to get some lore bit or whatever, but it has been awhile.

I remember that one of the early missions has a side objective you cannot finish without not only the "fulton" balloon system, but the one unlocked that can not only work on people, but light vehicles and then heavy vehicles (ie there's a guy in a heavy vehicle who never gets out of it, the only way to extract him safely is to basically be able to shoot a balloon onto the tank itself until it gets heavy lifted away by a C130 or whatever the frick.

don't know how it was back in the days anon but nowadays you get S Rank thrown out left and right. kill whatever, just finish the mission fast and you get the s rank badge. after that, just go finish the "mini side mission" tasks and the s rank stays forever. it's kind of too easy for a mgs game. the other mgs games were really punishing when u didnt play perfectly

Do you? What do you mean "after that"? Do you mean playing it again or all in the same run? So completing the mission fast with minimal (ie just the primary, no secondary, no extra secret shit etc) required objectives gives you an S rank for it? Then you can go back, take forever searching and unlocking everything, and having it check off all the secondary and tertiary/secret stuff, and "keep" the S you got before? If so that's actually a pretty great evolution because I don't remember it like that.

It may be "easier" but other MGS games were a LOT more linear and without these types of objectives unless you were playing maximum autism for Big Boss ranks or whatnot, so its good if its here. This reminds me to head back and finish my playthrough; may even start a brand new one

Oh - anyone who's playing MGSV The Phantom Pain - be sure you play MGSV Ground Zeroes and 100% it beforehand or at least download a save with everything unlocked. You'l import some neat stuff Note these are specific to language so if you play in EN vs JP you need saves for both.

              Anonymous

is the bonus stuff worthwhile? I did play GZ a long time ago on PS4 and now I'm playing TPP on PC. Really don't feel like going back to GZ. Would take more time than I'm willing to spend to unlock all that stuff again unless there's a really strong incentive and not just MGR Raiden skin again

There's a good bit of lore "tapes" that are useful but especially if you didn't play other MGS games, notably Peace Walker, it may not be as impactful. There's also some S-rank personnel including some unique ones (I think Kojima himself is one you get this way?) but if you don't want/have time to do it, you can just go download a 100% save for import. Just make sure its in English if you play with ENG VO and a compatible one for JP if you play JP VO.

Idk man, maybe it's just because its been a really long time since I played a Metal Gear game but I feel like MGS5 is just a harder game in general. Never mind the ranks, it's like prior game would have maybe 4 guards or so per map at most, and they would just make it hard to avoid those 4 because of the narrow environment
With MGS5 the environment is more open and so they compensated by making every secure location have like two dozen guards meaning you're absolutely fricked if an alarm goes off, plus I don't think I've ever seen them go back to normal routines after they find literally anything suspicious. They're always on caution at minimum after that

              Anonymous

MGS2 was the hardest of the original 3.
1 was easy because you could kill everybody.
3 was easy because there was hardly anybody.
2 was hard because, if you got spotted, you were practically fricked by back-up, spec-ops guards (unless you cheesed it).

4 was pretty hard too though, since every soldier had telepathic knowledge of each others' sighting of you (explained via nanomachines), and enemies would infinitely respawn so you couldn't just mow them all down.

You can deactivate the slowdown so you never get those points subtracted. It’s tied only to points, perfect stealth no kills + fast is usually a good way to do that, but you can go as slow as want if you get no traces (a hidden bonus with a whole bunch of requirements)

It's a big open world type deal with some base building. Every environment has many more ways to approach it than a standard Metal Gear level but at the same time it also feels like every area is stacked with a gorillion guards. There's some interesting stuff you can do like blowing up enemy AA radars so you can call in air strikes, taking out comm arrays to prevent reinforcements, blowing up power generators to disable lights and cameras, etc

    >I think there were two stages to this. First, you had a certain number of players who finished Chapter 2 not long after the game came out and went, “What? This Snake wasn't the real Big Boss!?” It's similar to the way people reacted to MGS2 (laughs). Some players couldn't accept that there was a new main character, Raiden, and they got really angry. But now MGS2 is considered a masterpiece. MGSV is a much longer game than MGS2, so it's like its length amplified that feeling.

    >Right. Then after this, people started to see the cut Episode 51, The Kingdom of the Flies, which was included on the bonus disc but posted online, and then reaction changed to people asking why this wasn't in the game. In other words, the story arc with Eli being unresolved made people feel the game was incomplete. But personally, I don't think the Kingdom of the Flies episode is essential to the game.

    >I don't think its absence is the direct cause of this reaction. Up until Episode 46, The Man Who Sold the World, players experience the story as Snake, but then they suddenly have the rug pulled out from under them. They find out that they themselves were Big Boss. Then it becomes their story. They themselves participated in the massacre on Mother Base, Quiet's disappearance, Huey's exile. I think The Kingdom of the Flies became an outlet for venting all the unease and confusion that followed that revelation. But really, this fits right into what Kojima-san wanted.

    >This is a slight digression, but this feeling of MGSV not being over, this feeling of things being unresolved, these are also present with Moby-Dick. Captain Ahab at last challenges Moby Dick, but he's dragged overboard and drowns. There is no climactic battle against his arch nemesis as one might expect. But many people are under the impression that Ahab died after a struggle to the bitter end.

Mad at Konami for everything they did to Kojimbo and their other development teams? Yes.

Mad that TPP is unfinished? Not so much. Despite being unfinished its still the MGS game I replayed the most. It just werks. And my opinion on the second half has completely changed.

First playthrough I thought its a real letdown, but ever since I really appreciate the DD focus of the story, the internal drama and the slower progression. And the scene with Huey on the boat is legit the best piece of character drama we got in games so far.

Here's the deal tho: GZ is better than TPP. Its just so much more funpacked. Also the physics are somewhat better? Why can I blow cars through the air in GZ but not in TPP? Its weird.

If TPP had at least 1-2 bases like GZ in each locale, it'd be 100x better. Still love the game, but just saying.
