Basically everyone and their mother took one look at ARMS and immediately said "Oh I bet I'll see one of those guys in the next Smash Bros." before promptly forgetting about the game before the game's trailer was even finished.

Why not? The Switch's installbase is bigger than it's ever been, Smash Ultimate is dying, and Arms has rollback AND free DLC. It would sell just as well if not better assuming they don't market the waggle shit again
They clearly were expecting far more with how hard they pushed it. They saw the massive success splatoon had and wanted that replicated for the switch, but no one was interested. They even started to give the game a ton of free online demo’s and even price cuts, only saved for the lowest preforming games in nintendo’s catalog, and even then everyone’s moved on
At the very best I can see nintendo giving it a second shot with a sequel but given it’s made by the same devs who made MK8DX, the highest selling switch game, they’ll likely want them to stick with doing MK9 instead for a far easier profit. Financially it did well, but far from what nintendo was hoping for, and in general no one cares about ARMS
They care about ARMS enough to put it in smash. Will most likely return for the next one too.

Man, the honeymoon period for Arms from launch all the way up to the final party crash were some of the most fun I've had on the switch. Lot of good memories.

i've said it before and i'll say it again: this game failed to get a bigger install base and it died because it managed to fool every normalfag with its marketing: it showed itself as a casual, sort of wii boxing head to head game when in reality it's more like "footsies the game" but with arms.
it's a deep fighting game behind that facade, so people who bought it got fucked up by people who realized it was a pure fighting game.

The game is a one shot wonder basically. A game without much going for itself. No one genuinely cares about the characters and lore. And the gameplay is not that grand. Only Twintelle and Min Min are stand out due to being attractive. And that's not enough.
And ARMS only sold well due to Switch not having worthwhile dedicated games at first. For goodness sake Zelda Breath of the Wild was simultaneously released for the Wii U as well.
