Asmondgold once said WoW created a lot of "gamers" who only play WoW

In other words, WoW attracts non-gamer gamers, people who otherwise wouldn't be playing games, or would be playing casual games when bored.
Is that true?

WoW is a casual game, they're playing it when bored. All he's saying is that WoW is for casuals but he lacks the self awareness to realize he's one of them. He's the real life equivalent of a 5 int rpg character

      To OP:

      That's not it chief.
I was a gamer long before WoW but once you get invested in Wow all other games fade away and don't matter.
Because wow is addictive and has huge upkeep. If you miss a day playing that means everyone else is getting ahead and you're lagging behind. You miss your daily quests, you miss getting arena points for that week, you miss a lot of virtual opportunities.

You go play Street Fighter and in the back of your mind you're thinking "damn I could be playing Wow instead."
I think that's the bigger issue. It's very addictive.

      >wow is casual
It's hard to play Wow casually if you like it and if you are competitive and like challenges. You'll end up getting involved in PVE at a high level or PVP, and both those things require tons of time and planning. The PvP part also takes tons of practice, muslce memory and reflexes, much like a fighting game or FPS.

Most people who play or have played WoW don't give a frick about that. However the game is designed to cater to people who do, which is one of its core problems currently.

Any popular online game attracts non-gamers.
I played them all and i still stick with my single player games, but i knew a lot of people from various discords that are still trapped in the endless cycle of grind and competitive meme, what a fricking waste.

Been there too, also a PvP homosexual, good thing Blizzard completely shat on the game so it made me drop it.

a good player could take out 2 or 3 average players at a time, even if they all out-geared him. This is due to skill disparity.

Probably different now. But back in my day I could take out 2 or 3 people in world pvp and arenas.
I haven't played Wow since '15 back then people were making lots of 1 vs 3 and 1 vs 5 arena videos. Probably still on youtube.

It's super common, happened to my friends, the more we got into Wow the less we played or cared about other games.

My roommate would buy new consoles and games as they came out, but never play them or beat them, because of Wow.
My guildmates were playing wow like 4-8hours a day, doesn't give much time for other games...

except it's all a hamster wheel. All the shit you build up is invalidated next xpac. or even before the xpac is over, with catchup mechanics. Why would you ever get in this mindset to begin with, this is straight up unhealthy.
Then again so is paying a subscription fee to play a never ending game.

          >Why do that?
None of that stuff existed when Wow first came out. They slowly added these evil mechanics to keep players hooked and feel like they are missing opportunities if they don't play each day.

            > to keep players hooked and feel like they are missing opportunities
yeah but it's only a feeling like you just said. If you have the tiniest modicum of impulse control you'd realize there's a time you should really just put the skinner box down and try something else.

        >You'll end up getting involved in PVE at a high level or PVP
except "you", the average player, won't, because only a tiny fraction of the playerbase ever does shit like this. The vast majority of people just level and do rdf.
What you're saying is tantamount to "well i'm addicted to it like crack so that means everyone else is too" which is just completely wrong. wow by design is a drop-in drop-out type of game that requires barely any continuous time investment. You could do as little as 1 quest per day if you wanted.
        >BUT BUT BUT YOU'LL BE BEHIIIIIND
Behind what? Once you hit the ceiling you're there just spinning your wheels. Then it's a massive slog of diminishing returns to chase after various .00001% bonii from raids or whatever. Whoa guess what, no one thinks that's fun but people with addictive personalities that would in another age would be going to the casino every weekend or playing pachinko machines.
And even then, beyond that, there's a hard cap on everything. Once you have best in slot there's literally nothing left to do but wait for the next patch or expansion... which invalidates all the work you just did and makes you grind again. Why would you do this? Why not get a fun hobby, or do something constructive? If you like RPGs and can get dozens of people together every week, why not try a tabletop game instead? Instead of wasting away for hours to chase a number that's going to be overwritten momentarily, and paying fricking rent to do it. You have to be legitimately mentally ill to pay a sub for an mmo and play it at high levels.

Asmogold said it created "a lot" of players who only play wow. I don't know what the average is, but I know a lot, very many 'gamers' got addicted to it and played it exclusively while ignoring most other games.

Wow is made to be addictive and a big time-sink, it rewards grinding and farming while you're competing with other players who are doing the same. The ladder is constantly being refreshed and updated so you never really "max out" and reach a ceiling for too long.

          >Behind what? Once you hit the ceiling you're there just spinning your wheels. Then it's a massive slog of diminishing returns to chase after various.. The ceiling doesn't last long.
People try to get the "best in slot" shit in order to do something else, it's a means to an end. So I'd try to get the best PvP gear because I actually liked dueling and arenas and battlegrounds, and the gear would help. And my PvE buddies liked getting BiS similarly to down bigger bosses faster and more efficiently. THey didn't just get the best gear and then unsubscribe until the next update or expansion lol.
It's all a means to an end. And you forget people had multiple characters, so even if they played for gear alone they'd want to gear out their other guys.

          >why not get a fun hobby
Wow was fun for a long time..most my friends played and we had a blast.

But when you do eventually "fall off" with WoW, the thing that keeps you playing, is what ends up keeping you away from the game.

Once you're out of the game for a few months, you fall so far behind, you can't be fricked going back and catching up, so you avoid going back, the longer you avoid going back to WoW, the higher chance you'll never play again.

Once I missed 1 expansion pack, I never went back or regained interest, because I missed an entire expansion worth of stuff, and now my character fell behind too far, so I can't be fricked trying to play catch up, so I just never go back.

I quit wow many times and took many breaks. So did my friends. Each time we came back it would be for shorter and shorter periods, but we did try it again and again, giving it more chances.

          >Fall so far behind
That isn't a big problem if the process of catching up is fun, but with each expansion they made it less and less fun and more bloated and restricted. And they dumbed down the pvp way too much and made many classes feel too similar.

I played wow for the fun of combat, dueling, PKing and pvp. The gear, gold and leveling up was irrelevant to me since I used bots to catch up very fast. And once my characters were done I would play the game like an online fighting game or FPS, focusing on getting better skillfully solo and with my team mates. All the mindless grind was automated.

I played WoW for like 8 years (2004-2012)

The last gaming console I owned was an N64. I haven't played any video games in years, I don't own any video games now. Im just a lost low status unattractive autistic manlet whose existing for the sake of existing. Im not a gamer, never was a game, but WoW was just in the right place at the right time for me. When I stopped playing WoW, I just went back to being a lost autistic soul again like I was before.

Ive never understood the whole "teehee im a gaymer" thing, isn't that cringe making your entire identity around playing 1s and 0s on a screen.
