At what point will you consider your collection complete?

And what's your holy grail?

Mine is an original boxed copy of Space Quest III. I think I'll consider myself done once I've got my hands on one.

      This.

I have the stuff physically that I had as a kid that means something to me. But as someone that use to collect I got tired of it. Its either a case of they keep releasing editions and its a maze to figure out which is the best one or its some obscure piece of shit that means nothing to most people but some ebay hoarder snagged to hold ransom. Then I get to the point of I could mod my old systems to output higher or get upscales and jump through shit to play games on old hardware that will need an eventual repair, or I can just emulate and spend that time playing the game. I don't think I could get rid of what I have because I look over it and remember late nights with friends or the one my grandmother got me and things like that, but its just too much of a pain in the ass now.

I made a personal list about 10 years ago with every game I'd like to own.

I'm sitting at around 900 games and I've got maybe 150 more to go.

I don't know if I'll ever own Keio's Flying Squadron, but that's one I'll probably let go in the name of being done.

I've got about 30 boxed games for each of the big retro systems, I haven't gone of my way to look for new games for a long time but I'll pick up big box pc games if I see them. My holy grail would be an fm townes but to truely never want a new retro system I would like an x68000, pc 9800 and an msx 2. I don't really run my original games since I got a flash cart and I was able to buy all the games I rented as a kid pretty easily or games that I saw but never got or full versions of demos that I had.

Unlike other collectors, I don't buy games or items that are meaningless to me. I don't care about "100% complete" sets. My collection is only curarated games I care about, or only has meaning to me.

Buying huge 1000 game collections for a single system doesn't work for me. /I don't begrudge anyone who does do it) But I'm not a library, and I don't want to be one with so many endless shelves.

My goal is just have a game room, or basement with a curarated set of games, systems, and some very specific arcade cabinets.

Then pass it on to my children so they can enjoy it too.

This is how it SHOULD be. People collecting things that personally matter to THEM.

Not endless hoarding (with no end goal) that many game collectors do. Their houses or tiny apartments become filled with gaming junk that they never play. Terrible. Remember anons, focus on an realistic achievable end goal. Don't hoard.

I’m a minimalist, it’s already pretty complete, got like ~60 games and don’t need too much more. It’ll be complete when I get dkc 2 and 3 in the box, hoping by the end of the year. not much of a cardboard collector with a few exceptions

Pic related, the fact I have all of these means the time is near. I didn’t bother with N64 or gamecube, I’ll just emulate that. Once I get a house though, I plan on hunting down a neo geo 4 slot and building a halo lan.

Here’s the other gem of my collection, something I’ve wanted since I was young and got this year.

As the poster before me said, I’ll never buy a game that I know I won’t replay. I’ve already purchased a couple and I just used them to trade for equal value to get something I knew I’d want to play for the rest of my life. It’s really only snes and ps1, with a couple game exceptions for nes, genesis, and pre-Pokémon gameboy stuff.

As normie as it sounds, I want an original TMNT arcade cab. Retro gaming is all about the nostalgic feels and there's nothing that hits my nostalgia button harder than that game.

      Anonymous

      >As normie as it sounds, I want an original TMNT arcade cab.
There is nothing normie about it. Imo, Arcade cabinet restoration and collecting is probably more hardcore than console collecting. You gotta fix, repair, and maintain 20 to 40 year old machines. This means electronic repaie skills, woodworking, and painting skills are needed.

That said, collecting a TMNT cabinet is perfectly achievable if you wanted to do it. Which one are you referring to? The original one, or Turtles in time?

You could buy an old used one for a several hundred dollars if you are lucky at auction or local listings like Craigslist. Then repair it and restore it yourself.

Or buy a fully working and restored one off of eBay or other sites for $1,500 to $3,000. It all depends on where you live and the deals you can get.

The original is the one I'd be after, but honestly all of the talk around her about diy arcade cabs lately has rekindled my desire to make a proper 4 person cab rather than the 2 person I slapped together. I bet I could find somewhere to purchase the original vinyl wrap to give it the real retro feel but also have the buttons, sticks (and trackball), and PC fitted to my liking.

Beyond that - there's 1 reseller in my area that does it for a living and will scour FB/Offerup/CL to buy any cabinet that he can. Having no actual job allows him to go get things at a moment's notice. I appreciate your go to's and opinions on it, though.

    A good start would be:
    >A late pre-Intel Macintosh
    >Nintendo 64, DS and Wii
    >Playstation 2 and 3
    >Modded Xbox 360
Plus any hardware needed to run downloaded games, and downloads of all the games that might potentially interest me. Other systems I either have; don't care enough about to give up the space to; or emulation is fine for.

My holy grail is Double Aught's Duality. Or at least the design document for it I found once and lost.

This has always been my grail since I saw it in T2, not to own but just to play in an arcade. I was lucky enough to play After Burner Climax with the rotating seats, but I've never encountered the original out in the wild (aside from the standard stand up machine).

      Where do you live?

A good handful of those machines are still around in retro arcades.

But don't expect to find them at a regular Dave and Busters or normal arcade. Only certain specific locations have them.

After Burner is also pretty popular with collectors too.

I stopped collecting when I realized that a rich motherfricker can just buy out all of eBay and not give a shit (ie. that saudi prince who has the most complete Nintendo collection ever assembled). Made me realize collecting is just a real-life version of a tedious collect-a-thon. Unless you're actively searching for stuff so rare that people barely can even confirm that it exists, there is no reason to collect, because the "fun" ultimately amounts to the same gameplay as mobile game skinner boxes. There's nothing cool or interesting about throwing money at online fricks to buy all of the decades-old garbage. Maybe if you're building a museum or amusement park for people to visit or something, but doing it just to put a bunch of crap in your basement? Play a Pokemon game or something, it's the exact same shit.

its fun to own games and play them authentically. i dont need to have a one-of-a-kind item or something to justify my hobby, thats just autistic.

the point is that collecting is an empty pursuit, a standard hedonic adaptation where every step forward inevitably becomes meaningless with time. Watching others achieve it instantly made me think about what game collections mean. Ultimately they are a way to fritter away precious time to acquire items that won't embue true happiness and that you can't take with you. I suggest Pokemon because it's a cheaper and faster way of realizing the same thing.

okay, moron. Everything is an empty pursuit if you want to be a b***h about it.

You collect to play games and because its fun. stop paying attention to what random rich fricks do, they have zero effect on your enjoyment, stop treating collecting like a competition. Your small collection will be more satisfying to you, yourself, because you know the effort you put into aquiring it and the memories you made playing them.

ignoring your assumptions of experiences and misunderstanding of how steroids work, I don't disagree with your idea of buying and playing only what you want, but that seems pretty obviously contrary to the OP topic, which focuses on collecting goals. I realized from experience that collecting goals don't mean anything and that they aren't special or worthwhile. I reached my goal and collected the stuff I aspired to get, and it was an interesting way to waste time, but in the end I was left with a bunch of shit on a shelf and didn't feel any joy from the completion. In short, collecting things I thought I wanted didn't make me any happier (in fact it almost bred more hardship as you now had to think about and maintain that collection against damage or accidents). Setting "goals" to collect as the OP implies only has one benefit, which is to make it easier for you to reach the ending and to stop sooner. I know you might be reading this and thinkig that your last big collection item will make you happy, and I'm here saying that you may find it's just as empty for you as it was for me. Don't spend a lot of time on it, is my advice.

              >I don't disagree with your idea of buying and playing only what you want, but that seems pretty obviously contrary to the OP topic, which focuses on collecting goals
your collecting goals are your goals alone. my goal is to collect all the games i plan on playing. its a collection goal with its own reason for existing, that being i want to play the games i buy. collecting doesnt mean buying random shit just to fill a checklist, if youre buying some shitty shovelware game that has no value to you then youre just hoarding at that point
              >but in the end I was left with a bunch of shit on a shelf and didn't feel any joy from the completion
have you tried playing the shit on your shelf?
              >collecting things I thought I wanted didn't make me any happier
its a hobby, not a bucket list, stop treating it as such. its not that deep.
              >Setting "goals" to collect as the OP implies only has one benefit, which is to make it easier for you to reach the ending and to stop sooner
yes? is this supposed to be a breakthrough of some sort?
              >I know you might be reading this and thinkig that your last big collection item will make you happy, and I'm here saying that you may find it's just as empty for you as it was for me
yes, it will make me happy for a few days. no one here thinks youre going to get enternal happiness and enter nirvana by buying plastic ya fricking goon

    >At what point will you consider your collection complete?
ive narrowed my collection down to only the systems i played as a kid, excluding the psx because im beyond tired of dealing with scratched 2nd hand discs, skipping, faulty lasers, etc.
i could mod it and play games off of a rom or something, but at that point, why bother

Currently i only collect for the gameboy line, snes, and n64. ill consider it complete when i get every game i plan on playing. i started a list a few years back, and ive got about 80 more games to go including import games. All loose though, as i have no interest in the box unless its an import game where the price difference is negligible.
i dont have a lot of space but, everything is small enough to fit on 3 shelves now, which is really nice considering i had to dedicate 2 bookshelves to my collection before i downsized

Don't compare your collection to someone else's. Just set some modest goals for yourself (like buying a working Dreamcast with some games you love) and trying to achieve that goal.

Plus the people who have huge collections are sacrificing something else in their lives to achieve it. Usually I see them spending all their funds to buy games with little money left over for anything else.
