I got covid but it was way after the supposed protection from my vaccine was over (which is why people were taking boosters), and yeah it was pretty bad for me. But since the vaccine wasn't effective anymore (according to them), I didn't need it to begin with.

              >wasn't effective
The biggest shame of the entire pandemic was how vaccine efficacy was taken at face value by the laypeople. The second biggest shame is that a good 70% of people believed that masks were for protecting themselves, then hopped onto the conspiracy bandwagon when they were told they didn't do much in that regard.

So the vaccine actually lowered my immune system pre-emptively before I caught covid, despite me not getting any other disease over the duration? Huh, guess I can just mentally discard the global scientific consensus on what vaccines have done since their inception. The vaccines objectively lowered mortality rate in high-risk populations but everyone I know who got vaxxed has caught covid multiple times and it wipes them out HARD when they do. Meanwhile my unvaxxed family chiefed the rona in under a week in like 2022 and that was the only time we've picked it up in any discernable form.

It's not mechanical, I know someone who spent a week in the same room as someone actively with covid and they never caught it. It wrecked me when I had it, but my elderly mother had mild symptoms.
The other point was to reduce overall severity and avoid widespread lung damage in 10 or so years, which unfortunately may still happen.

This is such a shitty trope. It's like one of those "The God Delusion" types got into an argument with the DM about whether they were playing low fantasy or high fantasy, and somehow obtained veto power.
What happens when someone doesn't think the magical sink will turn on? What happens when someone doesn't believe their floating city can float? What if I get a large crowd of people and convince them elves don't exist?
          Stupid fucking trope.

            Anonymous

The answers to your question are pretty self explanatory. If you think of "magic" as requiring a "power source" of believers then it all depends on how many you have. A magic sink wont work if it's one guy who doesn't believe trying to turn it on. A magic city will keep floating because one guy thinking it won't float doesn't matter when you have an entire city of people powering it with belief. The elf situation depends on the size of the crowd of people that believes elves DO exist.

            Anonymous

The floating city example doesn't even make sense. Sure, there's the argument that one person in disbelief won't sink the city, but you can also argue that the person in "disbelief" doesn't truly believe that the floating city doesn't float.

                >But that’s not the same as finding the full SV40 virus in the shot, stressed McKernan, a former research director at MIT’s Human Genome Project who now runs Medicinal Genomics, a Massachusetts company that sells DNA testing kits and other laboratory materials to cannabis companies.
                >“Promoters” are DNA sequences that help stimulate gene expression and have been long used in molecular biology, McKernan and other experts explained. In the case of the SV40 promoter, it happens to be derived from the SV40 virus.
                >“It’s just the volume knob that drives high level expression of anything put under its control, which in this case is just an antibiotic resistance marker,” wrote Phillip Buckhaults, director of the Cancer Genetics Lab at the University of South Carolina who was not involved with the study, in an email.

                >Is "sect" not the correct term for denominations of Christianity?
There isn't a unified body or sub-division of believers that can account for the beliefs of Christians on the whole.
Further, most of the miracles people talk about now couldn't factor into these discussions.
"My son made a near-miraculous recovery after being run over by a car", for example...what's to record? The exact moment he gets up? What if he was never hospitalized? The argument would be, "he clearly just wasn't hurt that badly". If he was hospitalized and taken care of, the narrative changes to "it's because he had the support of good doctors", even if they're convinced he won't recover.
"The Lord helped me become straight" is first doubted, then shrugged off.
"God showed me a sight of heaven", usually doesn't come with a part where the speaker requested a chance to grab his camera anyway, and we're not sure it'd show anyway.
                It's that sort of thing.

      Anonymous

It always comes at the cost of the setting. In order for the character to retain any sort of credibility, he needs to constantly fabricate some way the thing everyone just witnessed could've happened, and they need to avoid disproving him outright as a matter of convenience.

And this just shows exactly how dumb the idea is. Democratizing even the question of whether or not a city exists (not "should exist", but "exists") is almost uniquely shallow. I couldn't think of a better way to undermine my setting than to grant everyone solipsist powers.

Just have the character be delusional or unhinged. Minsc believes in a miniature giant space hamster and that was fine.

So now one guy with a mental defect comes with the ability to turn off magic around him just by failing to believe in it.

    > "atheism" usually denotes the belief that those beings commonly called "gods" are not worthy of the authority and reverence bestowed upon them by others. Atheists rarely doubt the existence of deities, and generally acknowledge that deities are very powerful beings, but deem them no more than that. Instead of gods, they tend to revere ideals such goodness or freedom, philosophies such as the Prophecies of Kalistrade or diabolism, or nothing in particular. Some scholars argue that the term "atheist" is incorrectly appied to these people, preferring terms such as "dystheists" or "misotheists". Others call themselves "agnostics", insisting that no mortal can say what is divine and what isn't, as the working of the divine are fundamentally unknowable by mortals. However, such distinctions are lost on a generally religious society, and most accept the more common term.

To this day theists still can't explain why an all powerful all loving God allows so much evil to exist
    >but free will
    Nope
    1. Omniscience Paradox
Strict Determinist: If God is all knowing we don’t have free will because he knows everything that we will do in the future, which means the future is predetermined. He already knows who will or will not die a sinner the moment they are born. If God is omniscient he already knows what he will do in the future too, which means he also lacks free will
Compatibilist: God can create a world where we theoretically could sin, but no one would actually want to do it so it never happens. However he hasn’t done that

    2. Heaven and free will
If Heaven has free will then God is capable of creating a world of eternal bliss with no suffering, that also has free will, yet doesn’t do that

If Heaven lacks free will then free will isn’t particularly valuable. We will spend eternity with no free will anyways, our short lives with free will is working towards this as a goal. Religion portrays Heaven as a reward, something desirable, so it is admitting that an eternity of bliss with no free will is preferable over a short life filled with suffering with free will.

    3. Degree of evil
God can create an exact replica of our current world, but make one heinous evil impossible to commit, like rape. We would still have free will and live in an objectively better world

If you object and say that isn’t free will, the rebuttal is God decides what is or isn’t possible. I can’t phase through walls or stop time in this world, does that mean I lack free will? Why can’t God just make rape impossible then?

      Anonymous

      4. Free will doesn't actually exist
We have no actual control over what are personalities are, or what our desires are, both of which fundamentally influence our decisions. Our personality is shaped by factors we have no control over such as
      >who raised you
      >where you were raised and what culture
      >the kinds of people you were surrounded with
      >genetics
      >socioeconomic factors
      >decisions you made as a child, when you do not have a fully developed brain yet (and society acknowledges this to be so, since you are not allowed to make a number of decisions until you are an adult, such as voting, signing a contract, etc)
You also don't have control over your wants and desires. You cannot force yourself to flip and genuinely find someone physically attractive who you think is repulsive, and vice versa, to the point of fundamentally modifying your biological reactions to them. Nor can you force yourself to fall in love with someone you don't care for, or genuinely be passionate in something you have no interest in.

So we have no control over our personalities, which will make certain decisions, and we have no control over our wants and desires, which also influence what decisions we make. Therefore we have no free will. So God didn't even grant us free will, he just allows all the suffering to happen for basically no reason.

Not even hardcore atheists like Dawkins use the "problem" of evil argument because it's fucking stupid. You're just holding God to your own standards like he's a character in one of your cartoons. Humans are limited by their biological senses so you can't possibly understand the workings of a divine being aside from what they decide to show you.

It's just textbook atheist midwitism where they fail to understand our reality is limited by our biology. There are animals that perceive more than we do in some aspects.

The reason that phrase exists is to explain away bad things that happen after you prayed for a better outcome. It's not misfortune, it's part of God's plan, you just can't see it yet.
In other words, "trust me bro".

It's not exactly wrong, nothing that happens to you is good or bad, you just assign that value to it, and you don't know what the outcome of it can be, if you're open for opportunities then getting fired or your family dying can end up being good for you.
If you allow yourself to get depressed and hate life then your outcome will absolutely be bad with 100% certainty.

It can be a community for grief, a promise of eternal life for the sick, or forgiveness of wrongdoing regardless of the crime. Structured religion is a perfect fit for emotionally unstable people.
At the same time, tragedy can challenge someone's faith in a god they thought only wanted best for them. They could pull through and believe it's part of the plan, or they could break entirely.

            >The reason that phrase exists is to explain away bad things that happen after you prayed for a better outcome.
It exists because God's intervention often isn't applied directly, the way a wish might.
"God, please don't let me lose my job. I need it to pay off this mortgage and keep [child] fed."
A week later, one of her coworkers tells her about a job opening in the next county over. The person who previously worked it left to take care of their parents. She finds a generously-priced house on Zillow and works less overtime for better pay. The school records transfer cleanly, and her life has improved. She thanks God, and says He works "in mysterious ways".

That is an equally retarded argument. If God is so incomprehensible we can’t understand any aspect of him when it comes to morality or anything he does there is zero reason or point in worshipping him. We’ll never understand him, so why bother?

what some people call gods aren't gods at all to others.

for example, while some ancient Egyptians revered cats as guardians in the afterlife, practically gods. others saw them for what they are, animals.

atheists can and should exist in a world where the "gods" are something people encounter.

  60. 2 weeks ago

It really depends on the setting. In some settings the "gods" are not really divine nor did they create the universe, just very ancient beings with incredible power. In those settings anyone could eventually reach that state given enough time or with enough ambition. They believe they exist, they just don't buy into the idea that they are gods. The Dwemer in TES are an example of this. They know the Daedra and the Divines are not truly gods, so they don't worship them.
