ATTENTION:?

If you don't have this screen, you're golden. If you do, then you have a brick on your hands, and, unless if you backed up your NAND and have soldering skills, there is absolutely nothing you can do about it, since the NAND is unique and is directly tied to the individual console.

Mine doesn't show this screen.

You do realize that the Switch 2 (Super Switch? Swiitch?) will release either later this year, or early next year, right?

And you also realize that Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is the last major AAA first-party title for the Switch?

The rumors aren't wild like the Switch was. But there is credible evidence that at least this year (Pokemon DLC via backwards compatiblity), Nintendo will announce news on its successor.

Remember, the Switch is an ancient handheld. And unlike the Game Boy, is still trying to run modern games on the system, even though every handheld gaming PC out there since the GPD Win 3 routinely outperforms the Switch.

Reminder that nintendo thinks the switch is a next gen console and intends for it to compete with ps5/Xbox series x.

It'll be 3 years minimum before nintendo announces another console. And that's not even accounting for delays

Do you really think Nintendo is actually forward thinking? They frick up as often as they succeed. Their track record isn’t one of continuous progress nor even consistent performance. They have nothing planned at all, and they don’t need to make a move to survive yet, so they won’t.

you need to start over. the way those work is by overwriting data at the start of the card. some of what's on there may be salvageable, but you can't tell what is or isn't until you run into problems trying to use it.

I know it's 12 hours late, but you literally cannot buy SD card on eBay at all. Most things you can buy there just fine, but they refuse to weed out the Chinese fake SD card sellers. Feedback isn't reliable because they've already sold a hundred of them to morons that left positive feedback because they put a couple photos on their 128 GB card and it worked.
eBay will always take the buyer side so you'll get your money back, but still, just a waste of time to even try it.

if you're using tiramisu, you don't need anything else.
all you need to do is go (on your SD) to wiiu > apps > make a mdinfo folder > paste mdinfo.rpx inside > open the homebrew channel and start the app.

Just checked my wii u and it has Hynix NAND. Am I fricked?

          maybe, maybe not.
if it's still work despite you not having used it for years, maybe you're lucky and it didn't affect any important files or your chip isn't affected by the issue at all.
in fact, maybe not all Hynix chips are affected, it might just be one faulty batch. we don't have a large enough sample to know for sure.
there might be more fear mongering than we think.

The nand flash on some models is getting corrupted from not being used for a number of years which in turn bricks them. I know an anon linked a method you can use to check if you're console has the good nand flash that won't get corrupted from not being used. [...]

we don't know for sure if it's just a case of bit rot, some reports and investigations imply it might just be the chips dying, for another yet undetermined reason.

Nice. Thank you all for bringing up awareness, especially the non-homosexual OP.

Playing Wii games on a Wii-U looks so much better... I'm not really sure how it works with custom games, but when I bought Metroid Prime trilogy it looked really good while on a real Wii it's really blurry. It still runs at Wii resolution, but it upscales the image

Actually, vWii's image is pretty ass, but the issues should only be noticed by people familiar with the games and videophiles.

        https://gbatemp.net/threads/fixing-vwii-mode.573265/

how moron proof is WiiU CFW these days? Do you lose the system menu or anything with CFW?

Braindead, nowadays there are these guide sites that are needlessly wordy so even moronic redditors can manage.

        https://wiiu.hacks.guide/

And remember kids, if only have one backup, you have no backup at all. Make multiple copies of your NAND dumps. I've seen way too many reports of people's Wii U's NANDs corrupting, there must be some issue on the software side.

Also, if you can't detect any wi-fi after leaving your Wii U unplugged for a very long time, try removing your CMOS battery and putting it back.

Then do the following. Go to Mii Maker. Then to Amiibo Channel. Then launch a Virtual Console game. Then put a disk in and play it.

If all of those are fine, you are safe for the time being

What are you supposed to do if it fails anyway? Is the actual memory dying or can you just reflash it the hard way?

        Anonymous

For anyone having trouble getting mdinfo to run, I got it running easily using EnvironmentLoader and Aroma (you can install it alongside Tiramisu, just hold X when booting up the console to change the CFW you boot with. No need to install Mocha.

checked mine and it works fine.
Also btw it's apparently really easy to hack but all the games worth checking out on it have been ported to the Switch as definitive versions.

So.. what worth can you squeeze out of this thing?

Easy piracy with free online (for now)
        "Native" Wii and GameCube support
Emulators for older systems including N64 and PS1

I have two hard drives hooked up to mine, one for Wii U games specifically and another for Wii/GC/everything else for the vWii.

At least 12 million Wii Us were sold. That equates to 12 million people. The Wii U has more of a core gaming audience than the Wii had.

Sony caved in to not close the PSN store for the Vita, even though the Vita sold a similar amount of units, because we started complaining to Sony about closing the store to begin with.

It's just a matter of having to power it up regularly right?

There is only one way to find out.

Tell your parents to find your console with the weird tablet thing, and to plug it into the wall. Tell them to tell you what they see on the controller screen.

Do you think it's better for the longevity of the NAND to store all games on external storage and use the NAND sparingly, or keep some frequently played games on the internal storage so that it sees more use?

it's to fix a massive exploit, like I've heard this exploit can basically get root level access on the system if the work is put in, so there's two possibilities, they patch it, which they've already shown they're capable of with other wii u/3ds games or if it's way too much work/impossible to patch they shut the servers down to avoid harm to unknowing customers, zero chance they leave the servers up with that vulnerability

Playing Wii games on a Wii-U looks so much better... I'm not really sure how it works with custom games, but when I bought Metroid Prime trilogy it looked really good while on a real Wii it's really blurry. It still runs at Wii resolution, but it upscales the image

isn't wii's max res 480i or something, I wonder if wii u's wii mode makes that 480p and then upscales

Yea it definitely does that at least if you run them from the Wii-U menu. Idk if it does the same thing if you go into the virtual Wii first

            Anonymous

Well most people are used to Wiis running at 480i via composite. The system looked good if you bothered to buy component cables for it, which also let you switch the output to 480p.

I don't think the VWii does anything special apart from just having an HDMI output, which is obviously just going to be lossless.

          Anonymous

          >Playing Wii games on a Wii-U looks so much better
Only because the Wii U has a native digital signal through HDMI. A Wii modded with WiiDual will look better.

          Anonymous

If you change the resolution on the Wii U to 720 or 480 before launching a Wii game, the up scaling looks a lot better. At least with my setup it does, anyway.

I'm thinking of getting a regular Wii, too, since I've never had one and I think the games would look better on a CRT.

Also, I have the Hynix MMC. It may be over for my Wii U.

        Anonymous

I have to disagree. It doesn't have HDMI, and the USB implementation on the Wii is dogshit. Most flash drives and HDDs will not work properly. There is a spreadsheet of drives that are known to work with the Wii, but most of the drives on it are around 10 years old and can't even be purchased anymore.

The Wii officially supports up to 32gb, but if you just forcibly format your SD card as fat32 I don't think there's a real size limit for the SD slot. The system can hang trying to read cards that are too big but that's not a problem for Homebrew.

The nand flash on some models is getting corrupted from not being used for a number of years which in turn bricks them. I know an anon linked a method you can use to check if you're console has the good nand flash that won't get corrupted from not being used.

No it's not every launch 32 gb wiius, it's only the ones with cheap chinese Hynix NANDs having this issue
If you have a wiiu with a Toshiba or Samsung NAND, you'll be fine.

      https://wiiu.hacks.guide/ very easy
when hacking is done you don't really notice it, you open the homebrew launcher by opening mii editor (closing homebrew launcher will launch the actual mii editor). other than that you only lose the health and safety app

optionally you can later install aroma which turns homebrew into extra icons on the homescreen and makes the mii editor standard again

The Wii U treats the Wii as if it's a new console, by apparently using half of the CPU, and running in the same way the Wii did. Nintendo did the same thing for DS games (including Game Boy Advance games) on the 3DS, and was the same process for Game Boy and Game Boy Color games to be played on the Game Boy Advance (although it was on startup, as a physical switch is involved).

This is not like how Sony or Microsoft handled things, where the systems don't need to go into a complete reboot mode (although the PSP menu is hidden in the Vita, and is unlocked with the Adrenaline hack, and it operates as its own program itself).

So what are some must play games locked on Wii U that haven't seen a port to Switch/other systems?

      Nintendoland
      Star fox
      Game & Wario
      Dr Luigi
Splatoon 1 and a Mario Maker are considered best on Wii U by some. Likewise, there are a lot of multiplats that have features unique to the Wii U, like Zombie U, Lego City Undercover, the Batman Arkham games. Definitive version of Rayman Legends.
The big one that people mention is Xenoblade X but I can't speak to that as I was kind of filtered by the soundtrack.

No it's not every launch 32 gb wiius, it's only the ones with cheap chinese Hynix NANDs having this issue
If you have a wiiu with a Toshiba or Samsung NAND, you'll be fine.
      https://wiiubrew.org/wiki/Hardware/EMMC_NAND
List of documented issues : https://hackmd.io/d12Fq9g-QlCjN2HJp7Yvew?view
(the Samsung one was actually caused by something else, it's unrelated).
If you wanna check your NAND model without opening your console, use the homebrew mdinfo:
      https://github.com/GaryOderNichts/mdinfo

tldr: some 32 GB Wii U with a Hynix NAND memory chips died.
it might be similar to the report a few years back of 3DS cardridges dying when it was mostly just a batch of faulty Pokemon ORAS.

      Anonymous

Theory is Hynix chips are prone to failure over the console being unplugged for too long. Once your system memory corrupts (and you don't have a NAND backup to recover from), the console is dead for good.

the gbatemp thread is actually from 2015, the console was only 3 years old.

Why ? It can play natively GC/Wii games, you can play DS games on the gamepad and it runs really well, other retro games on the gamepad is also nice since it's a 480p screen, it scales well.
And it's the only console that gives analogue and digital video output at the same time without any mod or with adapters.

Finally in the futur it could be the rarest Nintendo console ever since so many of them already died and since there aren't a lot in the wild to begin with.
The price could sky rocket making it sweet to resell. I dunno anon how you could even regret buying this.

    >WiiU started up fine, apparently was playing W101 on it last
    >Stopped using the system a month after BotW hit
    >It's been unplugged since then until an hour ago
    >System booted fine, OS updated fine
Guess my model is in the clear if it survived being unused for over five years.
Time to replay W101 I guess.

    >Nintendo doesn't tie anything 'free' to your account ownership
I hope this shit is still downloadable when they disable the ability to purchase new things. Were there any downloadable games worth a frick on WiiU? Only shit I ever bought on its store was the MK8 DLC and Pushmo World (where the frick is the next entry?).

Yes, if you tie the games to your Nintendo ID, you can still access the eShop and re-download anything you already bought or downloaded before.

Jesus frick I forgot how slow everything about the OS the WiiU was, and this is already after they roughly halved the load times on everything from launch-era.
